“Now Thank We All Our God”, composed by Johann Crüger with text by Martin Rinkart, is one of the most enduring hymns of gratitude, written during the Thirty Years' War. Crüger’s melody, simple yet profound, complements the hymn's theme of faith and thankfulness in adversity. John Rutter’s arrangement adds his distinctive touch, with lush orchestration and layered harmonies that enhance the hymn’s majesty. Rutter’s version preserves the solemn reverence of the original while offering a dynamic, modern interpretation that resonates in both sacred and concert settings.
This performance was part of a festive music hour held in 2014 at the Silvertown Auditorium in Athlone, Cape Town, on the occasion of the visit of Chief Apostle Jean-Luc Schneider.
