Tarahumara - Missions in Mexico

  • After the Spanish conquest of the 1500s, the Tarahumara scattered throughout the Sierra Madre mountains of Northern Mexico. Today, their beautiful culture continues to thrive. However, animistic tribal traditions can often create in them a sense of fear.
This is why missionaries have gone to them, to present the peace of Jesus. Through a process of learning the Tarahumara language and cultural traditions, the missionaries have come to know and love these people.
The Tarahumara have a lack of adequate healthcare and limited food resources, so a Pioneers team composed of Mexican nationals, Germans and Americans serve the Tarahumara with free healthcare and literacy, hoping also to see an indigenous church emerge.

We don’t like the white saviors. They call us malnourished because we aren’t fat Americans. They say things as if our people cannot raise our children for a reason. They “rescue” by taking us away and recreating the Spanish/Catholic wave of erasing us.

Breaks my heart to see my Tribal Nation continuously colonized. When he said they have to “ tear down the foundation and build something new in Gods image “ or whatever he’s literally talking about erasing our culture and creating a new one in “God”. And just so you know we aren’t afraid of everything we exist and live with everything. We are a free people. The ways we live are our culture. And if we’re so “malnourished “ how come doctors come to study out diets and the way we run and our strength? You can help without shoving your religion down our throats. We don’t want to talk or trust y’all because you always show up with your religion just like the Spanish during colonial times. You never listen. You all just have huge Savior complex. These people have traditions that are dying everyday, and forcing westernized religion on them is a huge reason for that. Yes it’s good that they’re getting help, but using religion as a medium to teach these people is doing more harm to their community and traditions than good. Secondly, assuming that just bc cartels help them they would turn to a life of crime seems a bit stereotypical and racialized to me.
