Talking about Master and Commander. They shot a sequence at the Galápagos Islands, where the Doctor was looking for a rare bird. The landscape looked magnificent but such bird who indeed exists in the Galapagos it’s not found where they did the shot. And you can clearly see a wonky flightless cormorant just badly composed on a cliff. Which sounds funny and ironic considering all the trouble they through to make the movie look the way it did.

@OldManYellsAtClouds That's, like, your opinion, man. Also, you don't get to tell me what movie I feel is underrated. And yes, it was your point that the movie was not underrated because it got nominated and won awards.
That's the thing with "Marvel / Superhero Fatigue". The studios started to rely on the characters to get asses in seats and completely forgot to care about what those characters are going through. Winter Soldier is still a great, fun, super/spy flick. I'm not burned out on Marvel, I'm burned out their recent lazy/bad stories.
The story is kinda weak when you consider they build up Kang so much in late season 1, early season 2, only to then focus on a macguffin all season long. And the Kang threat kinda evaporates by the end. Some of it may be because Marvel was already giving themselves the chance to move away from Kang but it's pretty jarring.
Master and Commander has to be the best sounding moving i ever heard... its insane when the battles happen and all the sound effects on a surround system
Man I haven't had such a visceral reaction to VFX comparable to when watching that scene in Loki s2. The whole show was just so good and it really was topped off capturing that sort of existential doom. When it first happened to one character I found it hilarious, but when everything in existence started turning into spaghetti in the last couple episodes it caught me off guard how uneasy I felt... Next level!
"Master and Commander" is a great example of VFX being there to show a story and not the other way around, like in many movies where they write a story around a bunch of "cool VFX's shots". And it's impressive how despite being a historic movie, so it will be VFX's heavy, they still managed to make the VFX look subtle, as in they don't jump at you just because they could. They are made to serve the shots and not to impress the audience. Amazing movie.
Master and Commander is so good. After seeing the conversation about the weather and wave effects, I want to revisit the movie White Squall. By the way, we have one of the full size version of the HMS Surprise you can visit at our Maritime Museum in downtown San Diego.
That’s the preexisting replica (built in the 1970s) that the production company bought for the film and refitted to make it the HMS Surprise. They also had a full scale replica on gimbals for the interiors and top deck work which they set up on top of a cliff side in Baja California so they could get the ocean horizon view. The sailing version they kept at readiness so that when conditions were right they could sail it off into the ocean and get their shots. Unparalleled work. They also recorded all new sound effects for the cannon hits and near misses, rather than using the old archive SFX everyone else uses.
Oh man, I loved so much the final comments on dialing the visuals back and let the story sit on top. That's exactly what destroyed "Dune" for me, and it was so hard to explain to people: like you think of visuals, of sound design, of how everything is greatfully composed, but fully missing the story and involvement.
I enjoyed Dune, but I remember someone commenting that in a few quieter scenes here and there they should have let it be and pulled back the soundtrack entirely. The eerie, tense soundtrack almost never let up for one second.
Master and Commander is such a great movie. It also has one of the most impressive examples of sound design that I've ever had the joy to experience. If only there was a great way to have sound designer be a "react" edition...
I've been saying it in the comments of VFX artists react for years, but you could do an entire episode on Blade 2. There are beautiful shots, horrible PS2 game shots, and awesomely horrific shots. "The Good, Bad, and the Ugly VFX of Blade 2."
And so many techniques on display - early digi-doubles, prosthetics and puppets, projection mapping onto digital prostheses, digital makeup, full-cg shots. Just the whole bag of tricks - Guillermo del Toro having a ball with it and throwing everything at the wall.
that "old guy" is Udo Kier - veteran character actor - been in Andy Warhol's movies, almost always plays a really creepy guy. Plays "weird and unsettling" like nobody else.
There is a scene in “The Little Prince” (1974) where he walks around and back on a planet, Couldn’t figure out how they pulled it off! Would love to see you react
I can agree on being burnt out on MCU content these days (just because it has been time and time again with bad writing and everything feels disconnected sometimes) but for those who have watched Loki season 2, I'm sure we are all in agreement that you guys should watch it. It's really great, and wraps up Loki's storyline really well. It's far from perfect, but compared to most of the recent films and shows (I can't speak for Echo) it feels complete.
A big reason why this particular MCU project was so successful and relatively cheap is because they didn't go through any of the common yet extensive reshoots. It was all directed perfectly from the story to the CGI. It took its time and was rewarded for it.
I mean, no. If you thought s1 was terrible, why would s2 be any different. S2 is an immediate follow up to s1, so it could just be a drag for you. At best, I guess you can give episode 1 a shot and see where that takes you.
I'm also burnt out on comic book movies and shows but Loki Season 2 is definitely worth watching, and not just for the VFX. The VFX and visual design in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is also really impressive.
No such thing as burnout. It's just an over saturated market so there's more misses out there, and there's the negativity bias as well as confirmation bias
Loki S2 is one of the first things from the MCU in a while that felt like it even had a script, and Loki season 1 was a complete trainwreck. I mean LS2 was making really subtle references to past lines and themes offhand, patched plotholes that honestly I wasn't even sure they noticed were plotholes, managed to nearly wrap up Kang given the circumstances, completed a pretty bloody solid arc with Loki by just straight pulling it out their ass, and got a full bloody creation myth to go along with it to boot. Definitely did have it's weakpoints, but most of those were sort of inherited. (for instance Loki staying human/asguardian despite his illusiory magic supposedly being disabled) Of course it also had some weakpoints that definitely weren't inherited, like how they literally just replaced his powers with green glowly blasts. I mean that episode 2 chase *_finally_* let him be competent again and really played up that trickster and illusion magic, but then right afterwards they just completely forget about it again and go back to glowy hand waves.
It would be a pleasure to see you react to different storm effects (tornado/thunderstorm/snow storm) in movies where the weather is the main focus or a main plot device. Twister is obvious, but things like the tornado in The Wizard of Oz that are surprisingly good would be interesting to see your take on.
I love ”Public Enemies” and have watched it multiple times and I have to say I never thought there were any vfx shots in the movie (other than the headshot at the end). The film was always very realistic and immersive to me.
Digging Sam’s Zenith Passage shirt. Thanks to Sam for rocking the Inferi shirt in one of these right before the Rags to Riffage Tour started last October. Having hundreds of thousands of extra eyes see our tour headliner’s logo right before the tour started was rad. Respect.
I appreciate ya'll talking about Loki. Like you said, people are so jaded about Marvel stuff these days, but Marvel is still putting some gorgeous work out there, like with Loki, and I really want people to keep talking about it.
It'd be really awesome if you could take a look at the WoW "The War Within" Cinematic, it's looks so amazing. The "CHARGE " Blender short would be awesome as well. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second Chronicles of Narnia movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight
Shout out to Master and Commander. Such a good film. It IS a great story and it IS exceptionally well-acted, but it doesn't lack for spectacular or memorable action scenes. Got the best broadsides on film, imo. Must watch if you have even a passing interest in naval warfare, pirates, action, good writing, or great movies.
So you think Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher, Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve and Quentin Tarantino, to mention a few, thinks that the effects are more important than the story? Really?
@@DarthBiomech Your words man. impossible you said. I just proved you wrong. I can mention 50 more directors currently working in Hollywood if you like.
I think the Stone Sour Through Glass music video would be an awesome clip for an upcoming react. There's a great set of effects part way through that really catch you off guard.
Peter weir was the best. He cared so much about the details that told the story. I loved that little bit when Ethan hawk mentions how he talked to him during Dead poets society.
The director of Master and Commander knows what he was doing, the effort they put into doing as much of the work as possible in practical and then dialing the special effects back so that the focus is on the story telling is how it should be done, shame that the movie wasn't a hit, it could have turned into a series like pirates of the Caribbean and the best part is that they already have multiple books to adapt. Hope someone else picks it back up some day
Wētā strikes again! Honestly feels like every time there's cutting edge vfx for that time (Master and Commander), it turns out Wētā was involved. Those amazing Kiwis!
Always really proud as a fellow Kiwi when I see them continuing to slay on the international CGI & movie-prop stage!! 🥰 The studio name is still weird though... it's a little bit like naming a movie production company "Roach" or "Mealbug"...? 😅
I was watching John Wick recently and I noticed that the puppy was this 3d image when Keanu wakes up and notices the puppy is dead. I can't unsee. Thanks corridor crew for opening my eyes to every mistake in movies. 😆
Another movie with incredible CGI water and pretty good real world water comping is The Perfect Storm (2000), some outstanding opticals in that movie, especially how the Filmmakers pull off the massive storm visuals with the gigantic wave at the end of the film and storm clouds.
Good suggestion for “hair sim” at Loki but I’m pretty certain that it’s particle sim with trails, modifiers and physics. I could plug in an ad here for Insydium Fused for C4D ;) Love you guys, keep it coming 🎉
I think Kojima might be using Ziva Tech. I love the Corridor Crew you guys are amazing. One day I hope to break into VFX and be as knowledgeable and cool as you guys!! I'm trying to learn Bryce and Hash animation master so I can work on the next avatar!
Even with Ziva you don't get the results they show on their videos. The reason it's not Ziva is kojima is using a specific actress and he scanned her. What Ziva does is give you scans essencially with all the mapping done properly. If you're already scanning yourself, why use ziva? What corridor is missing here, and in their shots, is a lot of tweaking, they didn't even DNA tweak to make sure their face translates well to the model. TLOU2 also had this were the mocap looked kinda janky, and then they tweaked it and it's one of the best looking games animation wise. You can probably go further with machine learning as well, I'm kinda baffled noone did this yet and that's what I wonder if kojima actually did. Like a fast pipeline for metahumans and high end gear
Jordan, I need you to know this: I have been commenting for YEARS that I would subscribe if somebody pronounced "templates" correctly. You just gained Corridor Crew a new subscriber.
I must have rewatched Master and Commander twenty times. Never really understood why it flopped. Peter Weir's The Way Back had the same treatment. Both so underrated.
The effects in Master and Commander were so good it literally never occurred to me before I watched it that it must have had a ton of effects work done.
'The Vast of Night' (2019) - I just re-rewatched this movie and was again blown away by the cinematography. There's not a huge amount of visual effects except for a 4min, 20sec faux one-shot (at the 30:45 mark). This shot starts inside one building focussed on one lead character, then goes around the entire town (even through a basketball game) to end up focussed on the phone of the other lead character somewhere else. This was accomplished with several CGI stitches between steadycam shots that are either handheld or in a go-cart. And that's directly after a 9.5min single shot where the only camera movement is a slight zoom on a lead character. Again, the camera direction in this film just blows me away! Well done Miguel Littin-Menz and Andrew Patterson.
the full size ship was built in 1972 . The ship was sold to the 20th Century Fox film studio in March 2001, and underwent extensive modifications to be used in the making of the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
There were actually two full sized ships. The HMS Rose (built in Nova Scotia in the 1970's) was used for wide shows where you can see the full ship and it's surroundings. The filmmakers also built a full scale replica that they mounted on a motorized platform. That was the one that was filmed in the tank in Mexico.
Hope the whole crew is doing well, but can’t help but feel a little bummed that I didn’t get to see Clint open up garbage at the holiday party. Anyone else feel the same way?

I saw it when I visited San Diego! It was quite the surprise to find it at the museum!
11:36 "I make the buttons" absolutely, and anytime I make my own gizmo I pat myself on the back a little haha
Oh man, I loved so much the final comments on dialing the visuals back and let the story sit on top.
That's exactly what destroyed "Dune" for me, and it was so hard to explain to people: like you think of visuals, of sound design, of how everything is greatfully composed,
but fully missing the story and involvement.
I enjoyed Dune, but I remember someone commenting that in a few quieter scenes here and there they should have let it be and pulled back the soundtrack entirely. The eerie, tense soundtrack almost never let up for one second.
Could do an entire episode on Master & Commander it’s insane how great it looks and holds up
"The old Guy" is the german Actor Udo Kier
@@LoveMakeShareTV 100%! Guillermo's commentary track offers alot of insights too! It's perfect.
@@tompollockjr144 Absolutely. The special features on that DVD are where about half my interest in VFX come from, it's so rich.
@@tompollockjr144The commentary for Blade 2 is one of my favorite commentaries. I love how Guillermo del Toro calls out things that are terrible.
@@TimJenningsVideo Definitely! He's a great director with a lot of fun information.
that "old guy" is Udo Kier - veteran character actor - been in Andy Warhol's movies, almost always plays a really creepy guy. Plays "weird and unsettling" like nobody else.
Yeah! I know they meant no disrespect, but I was like, "Thats not just some old guy!"
Plus, he was in the cinematic classic, "Iron Sky" 😍👍
Americans
An Old guy then
He was amazing in Iron Sky The Coming Race playing… you know… a bad mustached prick 😅
There is a scene in “The Little Prince” (1974) where he walks around and back on a planet, Couldn’t figure out how they pulled it off! Would love to see you react
You should take a look at the Narnia movies. Especially the third one, for the morphing faces and the 'dry water' effects. Really cool.
It's far from perfect, but compared to most of the recent films and shows (I can't speak for Echo) it feels complete.
i'm starting to burn out on people claiming to be burnt out on MCU content
A big reason why this particular MCU project was so successful and relatively cheap is because they didn't go through any of the common yet extensive reshoots.
It was all directed perfectly from the story to the CGI. It took its time and was rewarded for it.
Thought season 1 sucked terribly, would you still recommend season 2?
I mean, no. If you thought s1 was terrible, why would s2 be any different. S2 is an immediate follow up to s1, so it could just be a drag for you. At best, I guess you can give episode 1 a shot and see where that takes you.
@@kingkarlito I feel you completely... until I actually got burnt out lmao
I'm also burnt out on comic book movies and shows but Loki Season 2 is definitely worth watching, and not just for the VFX. The VFX and visual design in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is also really impressive.
The VFX of Loki 2 is amazing, but the season was very mediocre, IMHO.
@@yagelbar majors was really overdoing that character I found a lot of his stuff cringe inducing
Guardians 3 is the only Marvel movie to come out post-No Way Home that was actually well crafted. Kevin Feige could stand to take notes from Gunn.
Udo Kier has such a complex and expressive face. He really was a perfect choice for the OD teaser. Willem Dafoe would have worked, too.
My favorite episode in a while. Love "Master and Commander"!! More movies should be made like it!!
“This old guy”? Show Udo some damn respect.
Sam is gonna need to start a public playlist if he's gonna keep wearing all of the dank metal T-shirt. The Zenith Passage rips
"This old guy"..... is Udo Kier
"This Old Guy" is the famous actor Udo Kier...
"this old guy" is Udo Kier
Digging Sam’s Zenith Passage shirt.
Thanks to Sam for rocking the Inferi shirt in one of these right before the Rags to Riffage Tour started last October.
Having hundreds of thousands of extra eyes see our tour headliner’s logo right before the tour started was rad. Respect.
I appreciate ya'll talking about Loki. Like you said, people are so jaded about Marvel stuff these days, but Marvel is still putting some gorgeous work out there, like with Loki, and I really want people to keep talking about it.
Love the Zenith Passage shirt! One of my favourite bands!
Imagine any modern Hollywood director saying "no, dial effects _down,_ story is more important"
Right, it's impossible!
And ironically games are all about story now, instead of gameplay 😢
So you think Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher, Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve and Quentin Tarantino, to mention a few, thinks that the effects are more important than the story? Really?
@@FabledGentleman Please explain how did you arrived at that fascinatingly random conclusion.
@@FabledGentlemanhave you seen The Irishman
@@DarthBiomech Your words man. impossible you said. I just proved you wrong. I can mention 50 more directors currently working in Hollywood if you like.
Master and Commander is great. The HMS Surprise is now permanently docked in San Diego and you can go tour it.
Yes! Just started, and I'm pumped for Master and Commander
I think the Stone Sour Through Glass music video would be an awesome clip for an upcoming react. There's a great set of effects part way through that really catch you off guard.
Yes! Please do this one, I’ve always wondered how these effects were done.
Absolutely! I have wondered that too. Do a whole episode on 2000’s music vids. I’d watch.
Peter weir was the best. He cared so much about the details that told the story. I loved that little bit when Ethan hawk mentions how he talked to him during Dead poets society.
I'm 100% with Jordan on this; that metahuman stuff doesn't look "real" yet, but it's for sure out of the uncanny valley and is just looking good.
“This old guy”??!!! That’s Udo Kier! Show some respect!
“The way the lips stick together”
Just for reference, they did exactly that effect for Gollum more than two decades ago iirc
Hope someone else picks it back up some day
I'm pretty sure the "old guy" mentioned is Udo Kier.
Loki is so underrated. The VFX, but also the writing, acting, and score are the top-tier of what Marvel is still putting out.
Master and Commander is a truly great film! ❤️
That "old Guy" is the actor Udo Kier ....
I believe they had that movie in one of the early episodes of VFX Artists React
@@damyr55 Oh really, cool I'll definitely watch that one, thank you, much appreciated.
Is that a "The Zenith Passage" shirt? That is one of my top bands!!!! Oh Yuuur as Samus would say
"This old guy" is actor Udo Kier.
Good suggestion for “hair sim” at Loki but I’m pretty certain that it’s particle sim with trails, modifiers and physics. I could plug in an ad here for Insydium Fused for C4D ;) Love you guys, keep it coming 🎉
Udo Kier!!
"That old guy" is Udo Kier! Come on, man!
So freaking fun, love these. Keep going!
The person called "old guy" is Udo Kier.
The only channel where I don't fast forward the ads.
I need to hear Sam’s feelings about movies made with digital cameras now 😂
I must have rewatched Master and Commander twenty times. Never really understood why it flopped. Peter Weir's The Way Back had the same treatment. Both so underrated.
"This old guy." This old guy? That's Udo Kier. Yeah, no. C'mon.
You guys should look at the final fight in Face/Off. There's a lot of crazy stuff and some cool stunts if I remember correctly.
I just watched Air Force One after however many years, would love for the gang to talk about the effects from that one.
the awful cgi plane crash in the ocean!
I believe they have gone over those effects before
@@12hoyebr oh have they? I guess I don’t remember that
I stand corrected. They did cover it.
"That old dude" is Udo Kier. Absolute legend of an actor ❤
the old guy = most high Udo Kier!!!
The effects in Master and Commander were so good it literally never occurred to me before I watched it that it must have had a ton of effects work done.
sick Zenith Passage shirt
I recently watched Be kind rewind from 2008 that has a weird bit of cgi throughout the movie, but what's really cool is their in camera stuff!
"I know we are all a bit burned out by Marvel these days"
shows one of the best show ever made for the genre
If you stripped all of the Marvel aspects out of it, 'Loki' would still be really solid science fiction
Nope.
parasocial.
Honestly the two first ones before the ad break went over my head completely. I'm not a VFX person but they look fine, especially the second one.
The Hideo Kojima Game footage is clearly just the actors actual faces. That is not cgi, just actual footage of them doing the mocap.
