    CORRECTION* Chigur didnt kill moss, it was the hired mexican cartel gang that eventually caught up with him and killed him in the motel. They were seen driving away from the murder scene. But, yes, hell of a movie

    I literally just watched this film last night. Epic.
    I think you missed a few things however, most notably that Chigurh doesn’t kill Moss, and the money actually does end up in the former’s hands by the end, after retrieving it from the motel vent. He gave it back to his employer.
    Sheriff Bell is actually the main protagonist of the story as well, while Llewelyn is merely a decoy protagonist and the one who drives the plot. Bell’s struggle and inability to piece together the whole story is representative of his status as the true main character and an audience surrogate, merely witnessing a brutal fight between two other parties and trying to make sense of it all. Also, his status as a neutral observer in the story is best exemplified toward the end of the film when Moss is killed; Bell doesn’t witness him die, and so we, the audience, don’t get to see it either.

    • @bruggeman672
      @bruggeman672 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is there a scene showing Chigurh returning the money? Cuz I have watched the movie countless times and don't recall that one....

    • @J_C_CH
      @J_C_CH 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@bruggeman672 Chigurh isn't seen returning the money, no. However, he was hired to retrieve the case which we know for a fact that he does, and after he does that, he isn't seen with it again afterwards, not even when he gets out of his wrecked car and walks off. It can be highly assumed that he returned the money to whoever it was that hired him.

    Incredible film, pretty good breakdown.
    One of my favorite things about this film is the dialog of all the salt of the earth humans that are in it; the trailer park lady “Did you KNOT hear me, I cant give out no INN-Formation”
    The hotel lady “It’s got 2 double beds.”
    And the store owner who says “its unusual” to the half naked man. I always remember these small performances from this film.

    I think a lovely thing about this movie is just how well it flows while following the perspective of so many characters at different points. Many movies have incredible trouble nailing pacing and balancing character screentime. NCFOM flows so well that i didn't realize how odd it was until I tried to describe the movie to someone else and realized I didn't really know who the 'main character' was since all three of them fit so perfectly into the structure of the film.
    Its very difficult to balance that sort of thing and we often only notice when it goes wrong, so I'd like to just give props to them here for pulling it off. "When you do everything right, it's difficult to tell that you've done anything at all" applies so well to all the subtle things like that that this movie pulls off.

    Nobody has mentioned the significance of Sheriff Bell holding his gun as he’s entering the motel room believed to have Anton in. At the start of the movie his monologue talks about the old timers not having guns, he’s not seen to use one up until he walks into the motel. To me this shows that even the old men are forced to bend to the Will of the world and highlights the affect Antons chaotic nature has on those around him, even the most stubborn of us are forced to bend to fate and the chaos around us.
    Or maybe Im just a pretentious ass that reads too deep into things.

    I find this film the same as Pulp Fiction: great build up, fail to capitalize at the ending. You feel through the movie that something great is building up, and when the moment comes, there's no climax. It just ends. And I see the ending as the most important part of a film, the one you remember the most. And here, I really struggled to remember how these movies ended. But everything else is just greatly done.

    • @RedAequus
      @RedAequus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Thats the whole point of the ending, though. Life isn't some sci-fi epic where you blow up the bad guy in fiery pyrotechnics and fly off with some dime into the sunset. The exciting stuff happens halfway through, then once you get old enough you just sort of sputter off into your dreams. An ending doesn't have to be an action packed adrenaline fest to be good, especially in a noir.

    Language is just as precise, or opaque, as we allow it to be. If the person attempting to convey the idea in question hasn't a proper grasp of language, than yes, it can be jumbled. Or it can intentionally cryptic, to force each person to grasp their own meaning from what is being said.

    I think the movie has a lot to do with people struggling with the silence of God, especially with Sheriff Bell. The first scene in the movie is him monologueing about the old days of some Sheriffs not carrying a gun and not understanding the fact that greed drives most people and that often just ends bad for them.
    It's the simplest things that most people struggle over but everyone can understand why the Cartel at the drug deal died, greed over money. Now when it comes to why did the "good guy" have to die? He was selfish. Why did the bad guy get away? No one was strong enough to stand in his way. Why do old men get depressed about the things they couldn't accomplish? Because they were too weak to focus on doing as much good as they could and being content with what they have. All simple answers but people sometimes just can't cope with the fact that that's just how things turned out and there's nothing more they can do.

    Chighur would actually be neutral (the coin toss). Sheriff Ed would be bad because he doesn't understand the world (the only true evil is ignorance). Llewelyn would be good, because he understands the world and moves accordingly.

    Can Oedipus the king be compared to this movie? There are some similar ideas here.
