- In the dark days of the Second World War Garlieston played an essential but secret roll that would make the invasion of Europe possible, so secret that local people didn’t know what had really been going on up until the mid 1960s.
The village awoke one morning to a hive of activity and the harbour filling up with weird and wonderful looking craft. The army drove onto the Galloway Estate and put up restriction notices, the estate manager (factor) didn’t even know what the hell was going on.
That’s how secret anything to do with the Mulberry harbour was. The war office had identified the fact that the beaches in the area were almost identical to the area of Europe that was going to be used on D Day for the invasion
It was decided to build floating harbours and tow them across the channel to unload men and machines after D Day until a proper functioning harbour could be captured.
Garlieston was the ideal place to test the equipment and iron out the bugs before the real thing and thank goodness they did.
Garlieston the Birthplace of the Mulberry Harbour

We are a forgotten corner of Scotland
I thank everyone from the village who have allowed me to use footage that that took of this event; it has made for a better video.
What a beautiful way to remember. I love that they included the children. Somehow that makes it their story too. Thank you for sharing Mac
Always invest in the young
Never heard of this here in Norway! Always fun to learn new things. To think that such a small town, "insignificant" some would say, would mean so much in the end! Absolutely amazing and remarkable ❤❤
It is such a small village, overlooked by most visitors to the area. Probably why it was chosen for such a national secret.
i wish i can wander like u soon when i get older!
Enjoy life as much as possible and keep some dreams for when work in over.
always love learning about things in the world I otherwise wouldn't know about. great history lesson and reminds me of some remembrance day ceremonies I've gone to in my country Canada. these events are always important to remember and pay our respects to
We must honour those who served.
Thanks for sharing this video. I'm not from Scotland but I find the history very interesting, also hearing the bagpipes always make me emotional! Can't wait to visit one day.
The pipes are an aquired tast, but played in the wild they are fantastic
Heard the stories many times growing up and I am from Whithorn We should never forget .
Thank Mac for all your videos

Welcome back, it is a something that I enjoy doing. No pipe and slippers for me, jump in the Micra Camper and head for the wilds. I will be in Lochlomand later in the week.

Tomorrow if I can get a hand I will tie the wreaths around the memorial to stop the wind blowing them away.
