I am new ielts trainer. And your videos have helped me a lot. Yeah. I will follow this advice. I really want them to score atleast 7. English being second language that is a big goal, I must say.

Yup. Realized that I have been spending too much time taking this grading task too personally while I should have given the students the opportunity to think and correct their work by themselves. I will try your suggested strategy: copying the essay onto 4 different pages and marking each in one of the 4 criteria. Will hopefully update how that works, if my memory won't fail me. 😂 By the way, I really appreciate your effort to make the video more entertaining to watch. I laughed at some points because of some funny gestures. Thank you, Sir. Keep it up!

@@TheEnglishGrind My pleasure to give you feedback. I started teaching IELTS with hardly any mentorship or counseling. Not until recently did I realize that I was doing such a bad job... I mean, not that bad but I definitely would have changed many many of my methods if I had a chance to re-approach it from the kick-start. Anyway, I guess learning from bad experiences is just as helpful as learning from good ones, even though it is much more painful. 😬 I guess one of the things I've been doing wrong is concerned with providing sample answers to writing tasks (both 1 & 2) to my students. I completely disregarded their desired band score, which is commonly 6.5, and went straight on to write a sample that pretty much blew their minds. The vocabulary and grammar were way too complex for them. I was writing as if they were at band 7 aiming for band 8! 😂 So I guess if you could, I would really love to learn how you might use sample answers to help students with writing. I have actually come up with a strategy, which is to use those sample writings in integration with the descriptors so that I can show my students why a certain sample answer is marked with a band 6, for example, and what else could be done to improve it. This will hopefully help my students envisage what their own answers might look like to reach a band 6. I'm not sure if this is a good idea. The comment is getting way too long now. Sorry... 😬

I need help. I need to know some sources where I can find out how to grade students writing. I am having a lot of problems trying to find this type of material. Is there any other material outside of the rubric? How do I give a band score....? I am so frustrated and I don’t know where to go from here and I am starting my ielts training classes in about a week.

Hey James. There are a few places you can find example essays which should give you a better idea of what merits which band score. The past papers that Cambridge put out each year used to have model essays in the back (usually a band 5.5 and a 7 or 8) with comments from an examiner.
You can also check out my sister channel, The IELTS Grind where we used to do live writing corrections (Michael does a good analysis here: th-cam.com/video/eqxdA_Q4jsA/w-d-xo.html).
I'd also recommend you look at the material IELTS Advantage does on TH-cam as it's really good. Also, check out IELTS Liz as she's really one of the founders of the IELTS teaching niche on TH-cam and she also has a good site.
Just remember, you are taking your training classes next week and they won't expect you to know everything from day one. Good luck mate!

@@TheEnglishGrind thank you so much! I really appreciate your comment!
If I can ask a follow up, is it okay for me to not teach grammar in my ielts lessons? In your opinion is this acceptable for an ielts teacher to do, I’m currently sharpening up on my grammar, but I honestly was never taught much grammar and this is a pretty big task to attempt.
Also, I will definitely check out those channels! And I love ielts with Liz, she has such good content. :)
      Thank you!

@@123ieltswithjames I would say that most students who come to you are really looking for exam preparation tips rather than general English lessons. You'll often find that they only take an IELTS class a few weeks before an exam or after they've "failed" one. This won't leave much time for teaching grammar. Just highlight the biggest issues they have and work through those either in class or as homework. This was certainly true of the schools I worked at.
