Western Kentucky QB wisely avoids spiking the ball with under 3 seconds left

- During the college football game between South Alabama and Western Kentucky, Western Kentucky quarterback Austin Reed made a smart play when he avoided spiking the ball because he realized the clock was under three seconds. In college football, spiking the ball with under three seconds left is a penalty and if he had done it the half would have ended. Instead, Reed dropped back and threw a pass into the back of the end zone that drew a pass interference penalty. Western Kentucky then got one untimed down from the one yard line and scored a touchdown on the last play of the half.

I wish refs were bold to call delay of game on the defense when the defense is messing with the ball.
They actually did that against the colts in the Vikings game
That was HILARIOUSLY blatant lol
They usually do, at least when it's *that* bad lol
@sharp dressed cat that was the vikings game
They called delay of game on the Raiders against the Rams when a defender swatted the ball out of Baker's hands after a play late in the 4th
Its acctually taught and should be allowed. But you gotta have the skill to make it look good lmao.
That ref is insane for not calling delay of game on the defender
In the interest of accuracy, it was the back judge, not the referee. FYI, collectively they are officials, not refs. 😉👍
@@johncirillo9544 get a life. 😉 👍
@@johncirillo9544 cool dude.
Should be unsportsmanlike conduct and automatic ejection.
@@johncirillo9544
That’s cool. Nobody cares so we’ll do what we want.
That dude was literally taking the ball away from the ref 💀
That should have drawn a delay of game penalty. I remember a few years ago Michigan I think was playing Indiana and at the end of the 2nd quarter when the ref was trying to setup the ball an Indiana player kicked the ball. That ended up costing enough time for Michigan to not have an additional play. When Harbaugh asked the refs why they didn't flag it their response was apparently "he did it on accident". What a load of BS.
@@rocktheworld2k6 I could see them calling unsportsmanlike conduct on that.
@rocktheworld2k6 I remember a Wisconsin game around 10 years ago where a similar thing happened. Arizona state player layed on the ball for a good 20 seconds acting like he was recovering a fumble. It ended up costing the Badgers too much time that they couldn't spike it and kick a FG. Disgusting way to win a game IMO.
He's so used to stealing he couldnt help himself.
He went for the ball in case it was a fumble.
How was that not delay of game on the South Alabama players for literally stealing the ball out of the refs hands as hes trying to get it set
First thing I noticed and was like 'uh, Ref you gonna smack that dude upside the head for that or what?'
He was taking too long no one cares
Neither the official nor South Alabama apparently watched the Colts Vikings game last Saturday
It worked out better that it didn't though. If they call the delay of game then the clock stops with a few seconds left and they likely just go for a FG.
@@ninetailedfox579121 how do you figure? 3 seconds or an untimed down is literally the same situation. What down it is is irrelevant as it is the last play before the half.
The one ref was trying to move the ball and a defender had his hand on it slowing the ref down. Isn't there an obscure penalty for that? Part of delay of game applies, I think.
Should be a penalty.
It's not obscure; it's blatant delay of game.
@@mnemosy it is delay of game, but I thought there was a rule specifically dealing with keeping, or attempting to keep the ball itself from being put in play. I remember a time a defender intentionally kicked the ball after the ref had spotted it and that was a penalty, I just don't remember the name of it.
@@sabgab if someone intentionally kicks the ball after its been spotted i would definitely think that would be unsportsmanlike conduct
Really hard to believe it wasn't called imo.
How the HELL did the defense not get a delay of game penalty for that blatant interfering with the refs getting the ball spotted for the play?!! The one guy was literally trying to rip the ball away from the ref!
Yeah, when the dude on the ground is trying to grab the ball from the ref as a defender, it should have been an automatic whistle. As a player on the defense, there is literally ZERO reason why he should be trying to grab a dead ball.
This is the most Southern Alabama thing Ive ever seen
The color commentator was wrong about one thing. WKU did have enough time to spike the ball if they wanted to, even if they snapped it under 3 seconds. The 3 seconds rule applies to a temporarily stopped clock (like after a first down). It doesn’t apply to a clock that has been continuously running (like we see here).
Wrong. Read the description.
@@fakenamefakeaccount7174 Wrong. The description on a TH-cam video isn't the rulebook. The rule in the actual, official rulebook only addresses the scenario in which the clock has stopped.
From the rulebook:
Minimum Time For A Play After Spiking The Ball--ARTICLE 5
If the game clock is stopped and will start on the referee’s signal
with three or more seconds remaining in the quarter, the offense may reasonably
expect to throw the ball directly to the ground (Rule 7-3-2-f) and have enough
time for another play. With two seconds or one second on the game clock there
is enough time for only one play. (A.R. 3-2-5-I)
Approved Ruling 3-2-5
I. Late in a quarter Team A, out of timeouts, makes a first down, stopping
the clock which reads 0:03. Team A intends to spike the ball and run an
additional play. The referee appropriately blows his whistle and signals, which
starts the game clock. The quarterback takes the snap and raises the ball high
over his head before throwing it directly to the ground. The game clock
shows 0:00. RULING: Time in the quarter has expired. Although there were
3 seconds on the game clock when the referee signaled it to start, there is no
guarantee of enough time to run an additional play other than spiking the
ball. The offense must execute the spike in a timely manner.
The officials totally missed this one. First, delay of game on South Alabama for trying to keep the ball away from the officials. Then, false start on Western Kentucky offensive line not set. They just let everything go there. There were also a lot of questionable calls in the first half that favored WKU big time, which is crazy since they obviously didn't need any help. Weird, wild game.
The defensive player was going for the loose ball. If they would have challenged that play it would have been ruled a fumble. On the replays during the actual game the ball comes out clearly before the runner was down. But I do agree on the false start not only the linemen but the running back started before the ball was snapped.
didn’t see anything by the o line they all had their feet set you’re allowed to start from a 2 point stance he puts his hand down after the qb already has the ball
@@kylermccarty4881 they weren't set, they were still moving when the ball was snapped. Doesn't matter where the hands are when the body is still moving.
@@HandGunH0b0 When you hear a whistle and see a ref coming in, the play is DEAD." The defensive player was going for the loose ball" Yeah maybe #4 but that's not what anyone is talking about. The ball is literally in the refs hand, attempting to place it and 45 is trying to swipe it. Delay of game.
Good observation. I was going to mention that, but saw yours first. Lots of missed calls to finally call the PI. They should have stopped the clock to review the previous catch. Looks like it was either an incomplete pass or a fumble and immediate recovery by the defense. Just a weird situation brought in by a lack of control by the officials.

Ironic this was recommended on my feed the day after Corley (The WR who scores in this video) dropped the ball before crossing the plane in what would be his first ever NFL TD last night.
Same lmaooo
Multiple delay of game penalties should have been called, defense is literally taking the ball out of the refs hand to run down the clock
Great clock knowledge, Austin. 😁
Austin is such a great guy!! Very humble and respectful. Go Toppers!
smart play at the goal line involving Malachi Corley, unlike a few days ago.
Who is here after Corley dropped the ball at the goalline for the Jets
I was at this game last night. This whole sequence was kinda funny and took forever 😂 too bad I was sitting in the opposite endzone from where it all happened.
If a defensive player touches the football, especially when obstructing the ref, it should be an automatic delay of game and stoppage of the clock. In my opinion
45 was really trying to take the ball from the ref 💀💀💀
I thought so too, but then maybe thought he tripped while lunging for the ball trying to help, he let go fast enough though.
The 3 sec rule the announcer mentioned doesn't apply here because the clock was running and never stopped (see Rule 3-5-2 after you google the rule book).
That being said, the clock was going to run out if he tried to spike it, so it's still a heads-up play by the QB.
(Edited to add "and never stopped")
Yes it does it happened at the end of the half in the UGA/Alabama 2020 season
But…no one spikes the ball unless the clock is running. That’s the whole point.
@@bernier42 The rule is if the clock is stopped with 1 sec or 2 sec in a quarter AND will start when the ref blows the whistle, then the offense only has time for one play.
(That wasn't clear in my post above, sorry.)
Brother that'd not what this is about. The rule is no play can take off less than 3 seconds. No matter what you do, incomplete pass, hand off, spike the clock is still going to take at least 3 seconds off the clock. So if clock is running and they start the play with 3 seconds, even a spike will end the quarter because of the runoff of a play
@@youtubered4402 That is not the rule... unless there's another rule book out there.
WKU seems to do really good at recruiting transfer QBs and seems to be able to have a good system for them as well.
he also tossed the ball so he gets a passing td instead of it being a rushing td what a genius
Dak Prescott and Mike McCarthy could learn a thing or two from this.
We here in Pittsburgh can only wish Mike Tomlin could manage the clock like this at the end of a half.
They were never set though when the ball was snapped. O-line was moving around like jelly. lol

Should've been delay of game with ~8 seconds left.

Former high school lacrosse teammate believe it or not
Should have been illegal motion because they weren't all set when they snapped the ball.
Title (and the tv commentator) is wrong. 3 second rule doesn’t apply with a running clock, only when the clock was previously stopped for a 1st down with less than 3 seconds.
Yeah I was about to say that would make absolutely no sense to not allow a spike here
You’re already up 24-3. Unless Matt Ryan is your QB, you’re gonna win with 21-point 2nd half lead anyway.

I would have called delay of game on the defense twice. They need to start calling that.
The defense pisses me off trying to steal the ball from the ref like that. Such a dirty play

BTW, the touchdown play was a great design.
Do away with the two-minute warnings and instead stop the clock at every whistle in the last minute until the referee sets the ball for the next play.

"Tops" on the helmet is WILD
Watch out for Austin reed and western Kentucky next year??
That was a BLATANT defensive delay of game...
How about "For deliberately interfering with the referee and the placement of the gameball, #45 is disqualified".
South Alabama was going for all the cheap shots and penalties they could get. Roughing the passer after game clock has expired seems really egregious.
It’s just a free hit in terms of the actual penalty.
Defenses are often coached that penalties are “half off” when in the red zone and 90% off in the 3 yard line.
“ face masking and personal foul … defense, 1/2 the distance which is 1 1/5 yards.”
It looks like they weren't even set to run that play. They were still moving.
Why is that a college rule? What is the benefit?
Very clutch, they’d have only been up 3 scores before half without the quick thinking
1) Definitely should have been delay of game on South Alabama, which would have stopped the clock.
2) The commentator got the rule about spiking the ball with 3 seconds left completely wrong. The rule is that *when the clock starts on the referee's signal for ready for play*, you cannot realistically get set for a full second (as required) and spike the ball in time with only two seconds on the clock. With the clock already running, that doesn't apply.
Damn South Alabama. 251 on the map but for the wrong reason.
Why is that a rule?
this is the type of thing scouts will def notice
Someone saw the FSU-Miami 2021 game
Whatever happened to the "dead ball" call before every penalty? I sure miss those days.
How delay of game wasn't called is insane
why is it a penalty in CFB to spike under 3 seconds? Is it just a penalty in any other quarter than the 4th?
Nice play after the penalty
Is there no delay of game in college football if the defense messes with the ball like that!?
They won anyway, so it doesn't matter.
Obvious delay of game on defense. Fire these refs
We not gonna talk about the fact that the that the right side of the o line or half back wasn't set before the snap? Or the d lineman trying to snatch the ball from the ref,
