Why Buddhism declined in India? Was it because of Brahmanical forces? Was it because of large scale destructions and mass slaughter of Buddhist populations during Islamic invasions? Or it was because of the onslaught of Hindu kings like Pusyamitra sunga or King Shashanka? If the reason for the decline of Buddhism lied in the internal weaknesses and corruption that had crept into Indian Buddhism during the middle ages. We will try to answer this question which is one of the most enigmatic puzzles in the history of India. We will try to understand why Buddhism declined and was lost in the place where it originated and flourished.
If Buddhist chiefs collaborated with the army of Mohammad Bin Qasim during the Arab invasions of Sindh in the 8th century, and what was the impact of these collaborations on Buddhism in Western India. We will also travel East and South in India and try to understand what happened to Buddhism there and how the persecution and destruction of Buddhism were so complete.
There is an interesting fact that all those parts of India, which were predominantly Buddhist before the Islamic invasions of the middle ages, like Punjab, Sindh, Gandhar and Bengal eventually became the stronghold of Islam by the 12th century AD.
Another interesting question that needs an answer is, why Hinduism and Jainism were able to survive the Middle Ages and are thriving even today in India, while Buddhism was lost forever. Most of the Buddhist monuments built during the golden ages of India were lost and were rediscovered only during the 19th and 20th centuries, after remaining lost for more than 800 years under the debris of history.

sanatan hindu dharma based on which buddhism was born. because rebirth, dhyan, daya, daan, karuna, dharma, karma, bhikshu way of life, etc are all hindu practices which is used/stolen by Buddhist and created their own religion. its like stealing our things and calling it their own.
it makes absolute sense if they merged both into one. a real enlightened being is the one who unites not the one who divides. gautam buddha created divide he was not fully enlightened. he had a blind spot on dividing people. if you create divide it will create competition and competition has less positive but most negative side.

@@Yogi_The_Bitter_Truth_2408Gautum Buddha created that divide due to the strict caste system of India. Also, stealing ideas would mean taking ideas and not giving credit to the people you took it from. Gautum buddha made adjustments to hinduism and they believe that that makes it different enough from hinduism to classify as a different religion. This is THEIR way a thinking. Being someone that believes in sanatan dharma, you should respect that or debate their ideas if you don't think they're right, not try to delegitimize their leader by a simple "not enlightened" statement.

Yeah, everyone seems to forget that Siddhartha's popularity has a lot to do with his royal celebrity status who's mind blowing choice made him a topic of conversation forever slowly changing his philosophy to a religion.
All static philosophies can only exist in the "season" of their respective countries.
Like you can only talk about sleeping outside in the summer... That idea will get you killed in the cold winter.
This flaw in Buddhism is why the ruling class (who are taught extensive regional history) would try to destroy it.
That's not how to deal with flawed logic though, only education can fix that

Hindu Shaivist scriptures were written in Tamil more than 2000 years ago, but it should acknowledged that Tamil Shaivism had it's roots in Kashmir Shaivism.
It's said that sage Agasthya brought it to TN. Even now Agasthya is revered here in TN
The concepts of Tamil Shaivism spread and were accepted in central and north india. Pandits of Varanasi are aware of this.

    *_The Ashok Syndrome:_*
*An interesting article by a Retd Army Officer:*
👉 In India, it's never about Ideology.. It is only about Civilisation..
👉 And to put it on record this is why PM Modi faces a massive smear campaign from a powerful Lobby..
👉 But this did not start in 2014.. It started long ago, we have to go back by Centuries to understand this..
👉 India wasn't born in 1947, because unlike many other Countries we got Independence and were not created afresh.. Therefore, what happened *before* 1947 is as important as what happened *after* 1947..
👉 The most underrated event in our History being the *Kalinga War* of 265 BC..
👉 The War changed Ashok, the famous Mauryan Ruler but it also change India for centuries to come..
👉 The Emperor became Pacifist.. Whatever be his own ideology, it is very easy to confuse reluctance to wage War with a senselessly defensive mindset..
👉 For years to come, the Indian Civilisation became utterly defensive..
👉 Succeeding Indian Dynasties and Emperors would avoid expansionism..
👉 But their ability to perceive and pre-empt threats also went down..
👉 Compromise and Forgiveness became the keywords of our Civilisation..
👉 The Ashok Syndrome would soon become the Prithviraj Syndrome..
👉 Indians have been valiant Warriors, but the issue is that of excessive magnanimity.. Prithviraj Chauhan defeated Muhammad Ghori in the 11th century, but let him go.. Later, Ghori defeated Prithviraj and blinded him..
👉 In the course of this thread, you will realise how we would keep getting betrayed just like Prithviraj Chauhan another 10 Centuries later..
👉 Anyway, Prithviraj Chauhan's unnecessary magnanimity allowed Islamic conquest of India..
👉 This, of course, led to Centuries of plunder..
👉 After the Kalinga War, we never achieved a system that would match up to the aggression against Indian Civilisation..
👉 The unnecessarily defensive regime would give way to Islamic conquest, and Islamic conquest would give way to the British Raj..
👉Needless to mention, the Social thinkers and commoners also became timid about their own Civilisation..
👉 Britishers made us believe that we were Misogynist and Archaic..
👉 Some of our most celebrated Social thinkers relentlessly promoted British Education as a Panacea..
👉 As I told you, everything is about Civilisation.. Every successive regime shamed anyone who tried to stand up for civilisational pride..
👉 British era gave way for the Nehruvian Era.. India's Political leadership again ordained that India would adopt strategic restraint..
👉 China entered our Territory.. So, India's first Prime Minister said, "not a blade of grass grows" in those Barren Mountains..
👉 Of course, no one in the intellectual lobby protested.. Nehru was doing what they wanted him to do.. Be magnanimous to the extent of being self- harming..
👉 Nehru was only continuing what started with the Kalinga War.. Then came Indira.. She suffered the Prithviraj Syndrome.. Won the 1971 War, but gave away the exploits in Shimla Agreement..
👉 Pakistan turned another Ghori.. ISI came up with a Doctrine - bleed India through a thousand cuts..
👉 This doesn't end here.. Vajpayee faced the wrath of the Eco-system for many reasons.. The only thing they don't criticise him for is not crossing the LoC during the 1999 Kargil War.. This is again a manifestation of extreme generosity.. Pakistan could cross the LoC but India would not..
👉 The Parliament attack happened, we didn't retaliate.. Operation Prakram never materialised into anything..
👉 Few years later, 26/11 happened.. But India's then PM Manmohan Singh chose, "Strategic restraint.."
👉 No one in a Powerful Lobby criticised him..
👉 As long as you don't go beyond the Lakshman Rekha that has been drawn by Centuries of timidity, no one will rebuke you..
👉 But then came PM Modi on the stage..!
Pakistan attacked in Uri, so the Para SF caused damage to Terror Launchpads across the LoC..
👉 With the Balakot Airstrikes, he still went several steps further..
    👉Of course, he is hated..
👉 After several Centuries, India is pre-empting threats..
👉We had stopped pre-empting in 265 BC, how come we could pre-empt now..
👉 Modi-hate is not about ideology, it’s about Civilisation.!!
👉 I wish and I hope that this Modi succeeds in transforming our mindset for the other Modis' to follow the suit, because one Modi will not be sufficient enough to clear the rot accumulated through Centuries..
*(This is a very well articulated post of Siddharth Gautam)*
Interesting......some Food for thought... for Indians.

Hello, pls stop being a intellectual POWERFUL and TIMID inefficient LOBBY urself, under the mask of Magnanimity that even Modi is showing now to own Indians for VOTEBANK in the name of RELIGIOUS HATRED to win elections.
If u observe we all might agree with ASHOKA AND PRITHVIRAJ SYNDROMES of being too magnanimous to enemies because of incomplete understanding of DHARMA AND a VALUE IN UNDERSTANDING HOW TO HONOUR AND PROTECT own CIVILISATION. But if u watch the video oce again, it is the lack of integrity between own BUDDHIST TRADERS and HINDU TRADERS that allowed the MUSLIMS AND LATER THE BRITISH to take over india, and the miscalculation of Buddhist monks probably due to indifferences and looking down upon Buddhists and their traders in protecting a true integrity in CIVILISATIONAL VALUES that arose from Hindu traders towards Buddhist values, till 712 AD or so that led Buddhist sangha and their supporting Trade unions to START INVITING MUSLIM INVADERS into the country. To which their own universities and Buddhist monks themselves fell prey to and were mass slaughtered too.
It is infact true Hindu Manu Dharma is mainly MISOGYNIST and ARCHAIC and hence hypocrit due to lack of inner values to follow among our own indians. Which I see Modi and BJP seems to encouraging as a Democratically elected leadership through mere hindu beliefs alone, more than values. This will have consequemces in longterm and its not enough to only try to protect borders ALONE of India, but to try create INNER REFORMS within the value systems of the country, which Iam sure MODI is too old to be able to do whats needed and we need to wait a CRISIS for the needed changes to happen, along with the events that keep happening all along the world too PARALLEL AND SIMULTANEOUSLY, with RUSSIA NATO crisis starting and china threatening India too as a Communist leadership. The CORRUPTION AND WRONG PARENTING methods on the next generation is too high and crisis is what we are getting closer to as a Democracy since the time Gandhis and Nehrus are chosen and Democracy run the English way, and not choosing fighters like Netaji, Bhagat singh, Aazaad and also ofcourse the values they stand for, being not chosen.
Good luck to u and ur retired Army officer whoever is totally living in his own private cocoons as chamcha to Indian government that Modi is trying to build for the MILITARY alone at the cost of values in the country, and those whoever not facing the CORRUPTION AND HARASSMENTS and Atrocities of Democracy of the social injustices at all, and will have many comfort zones how Modi is better protecting the Military alone compared to Congress, who failed even that. It cannot be forgotten that DEMOCRACY is a bad way to choose proper leadership since the MASSES AND WEAKER have a chance to elect a weaker leadership based on blind beliefs and Modi shouldnt think he is smarter than SOCRATES and Chanakya to simply do whatever he wants and whenever he wants to do anything . A CRISIS will teach the whole world one day and rhen should teach india too

Being a Jain, belonging to the oldest religion on Earth, there had been many instances where Jains were persecuted, which was not at all good, But looking at present scenario there is no grudge among us, all Hindus treat Jains, Buddhs and Sikhs with respect, something common amongst Hindu, Jains, Buddhs is the concept of Anekantwada: that means path can be different but truth is one, unlike all other abhramic religion.

jainism cannot be the oldest religion because there are many things attached to it which indicates why the first believe cannot be such specific . And we all are the one and the same. Evil people are everywhere and at any time be it past or present or future but the fact that jainism is also here even though in small quantity indicates how our ancestors use to respect each others view.

Where is your evidence that Jainism is the world's oldest religion? Mahavir was its first historical character, and he was a contemporary of the Buddha. Mahavir is only historical thanks to Buddhist sources because most Jain documents are only from 1500 years ago and that is again because according to Jaina tradition they were all burned once. None of the earlier Tirthankaras are historical but if you want to go that route the Buddhists again are in possession of the oldest Indic document mentioning earlier beings that came to teach. The whole concept of puranic avatars is also copied from Buddhism because the early Buddhist Suttas predate all of these and none of these were recorded anywhere in India until almost a millennia after Buddhism talked about it. Good luck

Lol, Talking like flying horses, rig vedas mentions Bhagwan Adinath being the first teerthankar, his child named Bharat being the first chakravarti samrath, and the country named after him.
Besides we Jains read our texts daily where there is mention of everything, Mahavira being the only historical figure according to the history wrote by Britishers or their ass licker historians, why should that be the only truth you want to believe?
Besides Buddhism started with the Gautam Buddha, he first tried to find answers within Hinduism he was not happy, then he met with Jain munis, he couldn't find about the truth he was looking for then he went to the path of salvation himself where he got the keval gyan(the complete truth) after which Buddhism originated, so it came to be known after a single person hence it is not older then 3000 years.
But Jainism is older than the time itself, you can't prove that Hinduism is older but you find Shiva and Vishnu idols from Harappa civilization, the same way you find Idols belonging to Bhagwan Adinath from Harappa sites, so Jainism is probably one of the oldest path which was being followed.

True. I am a proud Hindu. Mandukya Upanishad proves that Nihilism or Sunyavada of Buddhism is illogical as something (the world) cannot come out of nothing. Our Upanishads are the deepest and most scientific treatises of the ultimate Truth. Sankaracharya had the strength of the Upanishads to support him in his debates with people of other faiths. The sheer logic of what he spoke (echoing the Upanishads) was enough to defeat the other debaters. But Hindus have the greatest reverence for Buddha and his peace loving nature. He preached love and peace. Later Buddhism degenerated (because of its later developments into mahayana, heenayana etc) and started practices which were to some extent contrary to what Buddha preached. Islam was single-handedly responsible for conversion of many Asian and African countries into a religion through sheer aggression and not because of the depth of its philosophy. People mostly converted for economic reasons (avoiding taxes, better trading opportunities etc) or out of fear.

In Hinduism, you can worship Shiv, Devi, Vishnu, Krishna, Rama, Hanuman and thousands/millions of other gods. You're still a hindu. Similarly, you can be a buddhist, and revere Buddha, and still, you'd be a Hindu since Hinduism is an amalgamation of thousands of sub-faiths developed over thousands of years. No trace of Buddhism here around me but believe me i was so infatuated with Buddhism when first read about it in my 5th standard History text book, that i felt an yearning to visit all the Buddhist sites mentioned in my book. The air of Bengal is still Buddhist you can derive it from the non agressive Bengali behaviour. Buddhism is pure spirituality of conciousness & it needs an enlightened BUDDHA to keep it's wheel moving, The later monks weren't enlightened & sccumbed to the lesiurely life of monasteries, to the jealousy against Brahmins, weren't farsighted to smell the intentions of the barbaric invaders & they were so shortsighted & dumb that they didn't understand the common Hindu public, they lived exclusive of the general masses thinking them to be inferior, all these factors backfired for it's decline. Had there been an enlightened BUDDHA beforehand that turmoil today Buddhism would have been regarded as a saviour of the whole subcontinent. Still no lessons learned by present day Buddhist followers, still they carry the same hatred against the Brahmins, still treating the common Hindus as inferiors & again befriending Islamic peoples. The executor religion who brutally massacred their monks, burnt & destroyed their monasteries and universities is again the caring friend of the so called Neo Buddhists. How can they do this friendship? Fake Buddhists!

Pushyamitra shunga was not destroyed any Bhudist places insted if that, Budhist in india were not harmony with hindu, jain & others, their atrocities was went too much..! So in this situation Shunga dynasty came into existence.
Even though Budhism was born in Bihar, the native peoples were Hindus, as long as Bhud alive so called modern day Bhudism was one thought of Sanatan darma which emphasizes meditation, simple way to reach god, simple practice.
After his death Bhudism went into other parts of world.
Interestingly, Bhudism was more dominated in present day Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bengal but how it vanished !?
The on those days Bhudism had several drawbacks/faults.
    Those are,
    1. Bhudist were always fight with Hindus but not with Islamist..!
    2. Bhudist never understood what Budha said..! He never said to hate Hinduism..! He never asked his followers not to practice hindu culture, tradition, practices..but he proclaimed the way of well being, how to live simple way, meditation, right knowledge, whatever he thought...all based on Veda & Upanishads..! What Upanishads says exactly he said it in local languages that's it...!
VERY IMPORTANT to be noted is :-
So, Hindu Vedic scholars never opposed Gowtam Budha when he was alive, but they opposed the other form of Budhism which originated after his death..
    3. Budhism declined in Ghandar Provence, & all other Kushana Empire- Afganistan, Tajik, Kazak, north west frontier of Pakistan due to islamic invasion by Persian Sulatans. The reason for that also has very important, the reason are Budhist left the practice of worshiping God..!! Instead they worship Gowtam Budha..! But, budha's ideology was not that...his ideology was simple solvation, he neither opposed worshipping of God nor Instructed..! His way of teachings are purely on knowledge based on Upanishads.
See, common people mindset is different from Intellectuals, so islamic teaching of God & it's practices attracted to Budhist people of Budhist areas so they converted to islam in large numbers.
So, Budhism is the main cause for decline of Budha's teachings..!
Budha said not be worshipped Idols, but largest Idols in this wold is Budha...!
This contraversial thought are the main reason for decline of Budhism.

    However, Hinduism includes everything.
    You name it.
    Mediation,inner peace and mindfulness of Buddhism;
    Non-violence, vegetarianism, purity, cleanliness etc. of Jainism;
Fighting spirit, dying for the image or respect, being warrior of Sikhism...
All these attributes of different Dharma are just a part of Hinduism...
Infact all these Dharmas have infact originated from Hinduism or by people who were raised with Hindu philosophy so no wonder why they have attributes of Hinduism, there we must respect and accept all of them as our own...

The final reason for declining Buddhism in India was difference between Hinduism and Buddhism, Hinduism worked on all aspect of field and life. It had all aspects philosophies, science, maths, literature, music, politics and war. So it was at every home in many aspects. But Buddhism was mostly on the meditation, and philosophies and teachings of Buddha (especially in india). So it was mostly in a concentrated form in monestries and other central points. So during Islamic invasion, it was easy for Islamists to uproot the concentrated form of Buddhism, than a decentralised Hinduism.

Christianity & Islam have parked Sugar Daddy Gods in the sky, they have nothing better to do than to cater to their followers, live the easy good life sponging off God - a lazy, useless, pointless existence, "life" they call it, for eternity!

Buddhism and Jainism are extremely hard religions to follow. They require immense sacrifice, commitment and dedication.
Forget those two the majority of Christians, Muslims and Hindus are basically atheists. They follow a religion in name only because it's convenient. Not to mention such a strict discipline like Buddhism. Jainism is even more so.

You will find that more of them actually follow clowns like 'Sadhguru' than texts left by actual saints and sages.
You are probably also one of the fake/corrupt ones weather you realise it or not. Although I don't know your situation, just going off off statistics.
They will also assert that they're 100% Hindu. It's just out of convenience and identity. Hindu to them is like being Indian or being Male/Female. Just another label which they identify with.
Furthermore you will find even more clowns saying "I follow Shri Ram/Krishna :)". But when you ask what about them do you follow... There's no answer or very surface level answers like 'love' 'peace' and whatnot. 😂 They actually haven't read anything other than maybe some dumb TV serial if you're lucky.
Seriously try this out. Although this might be hard to accept and you would want to accept them as Hindu anyways if you're one of the fakes as well. It's really eye opening. I've personally tried this. I'd say, easily 90% + of the world is atheistic or even hedonistic in practise.
And if you're Buddhist, try this out with Buddhists as well. The situation is almost the same. Although, Hinduism particularly is in a very bad situation so I'd assume Buddhists in name would have a far higher proportion of actual buddhists.

As a prelude to this, two facts should have been told .
Particularly to the understanding for those outside Indian Subcontinent.
    1. There were Hindus BEFORE Buddhists.
2.Buddha was a Hindu King named Siddartha Gauthama before enlightenment.
His followers ( Hindus once again) came to be known as Buddhists.
A large population though remained as Hindus.

hindu is not any religion, there are many sects like shaivaism and vaishnavism along with many different forms of worship, the british got confused and they categorised all such into one single religion, the word hindu came from the river sindhu and indu from french and india from british. the indus people worshipped peeple tree and lingam , can they be called hisdus they did not even know sanskrit. what most think abit hindu is the brahmanical religion and sanskrit brought by Aryan outsiders , Adivasi lived 40,000 years before any brahmnanical religion and they worshipped nature , can they be called hindus? hindu is not any religion it is a british coined term for all similar rituals and forms of worship.

Hindu is a term born out of Sindhu, name of a river. The people / civilization around / across the river are Hindus.
It is not a religion ONLY if you see through the prism of Judeo Abrahimic faith !
It is Dharma in Indian languages . A righteous way of living, if you may call that in English as it has no accurate synonym for the term Dharma.
Suffice it to say that they were people of Sindhu/ Indus civilization who ARE called Hindus.
Buddha,Mahaveer , pioneer Sikh Gurus were from this land and were Hindus.
Just as Jesus was a Jew and his followers Christian.
PS: Although Buddha was born in today's Nepal ( Lumbini) he attained enlightenment in today's India ( Gaya, Bihar ).

They say that the difference between Buddhism and Jainism is that Jainism developed a strong community of householders along with the institutions for monks. At bad times this householder community came to rescue for their monks and nuns with strong support. Buddhism however never developed any distinct community of laity. Buddhism was centralized in all these Mahavihara's like Nalanda,Vikramasila, Sompuri, Jagadalla, Ballavi etc. After the destruction of these vihara's many Masters were either killed or fled to Nepal and Tibet and due to lack of realized unbroken enlightened lineage Masters Buddhism gradually degenerated but still it took 400 years to completely lost as major Buddhist Population integrated to general mass of Hinduism. But still there were some traditions remaining , during the British period while taking survey there were a sect called " Mahim" near Andra Pradesh and Orisha they called themselves Buddhist , when asked why till date you called yourself Hindu and now certainly you call yourself Buddhist, then they said if we called ourselves Buddhist then we would have been prosecuted now in your rule we are free. This too shows that Buddhist were prosecuted by Hindu kings.

Exactly, Buddhists point to one or two incidents as proof that Buddhism was driven out of India - never once acknowledging that Indians chose to be Hindu
And the western racist media who see Buddhism as a white religion and of course Hinduism is a "darkie" religion, promotes that idea

Buddhism ideas have been taken or owned by Hindu religion such as heavy sacrifice of animals prohibition. Near future Buddhism will answer many questions of modern world. Buddhism may mould the advanced human race into a peaceful one. Namaskaaram to all heartfully.

Correction: Buddha taught in Pali, never gave even one sermon in Prakrit (which was predominantly used only by Jains).

Solely my opinion! Both Jainism and Buddhism are the more austere forms of adherence in understanding Dharmic paths ...Whereas Krishna aks of one not to look to Heavens for answers - one has to take 'arms' if necessary to fight for what is right. In the South it's Shiva's son Karthikeya who rules supreme! Why? He is valiant - courageous and fights Adhramic forces. Often depicted with 2 consorts- 1 clestial and the other earthly..... meaning ... the spritual and material world are not mutually exclusive and to live life with vgour & fortitude!
