I read Robbie's book he does not come off as being religious, his mother was Mohawk and Cayuga and his real father who died before Robbie was born was Jewish. In his book he writes a lot about his childhood and teenage years, never mentions going to church. However, I think he was spiritual, based on some of his music, especially after he left The Band, and also some of this writing and interviews he gave.
Frist time I've heard this song, and it made my eyes water. What a great song. It's ALL about Christ Jesus, The Savior of the world. 🙌🏼 Merry Christmas from Texas Y'all 2023‼️ 🙏🏻☝🏻📖 ✝️ ❤
I had not heard this song until I listened to Joan Osborne's Christmas album. Not taking anything away from The Band, nobody like them, but she did an outstanding job on this beautiful song as well.
Agreed, and it's much better than many of the other Christmas songs that's out there. This song has meaning pertaining to the son of God, who was born on this earth, however is present in our spiritual lives for ever.
I'm not a very religious person and I usually don't get choked up over a song; however, there's definitely something magical about this song, something wonderful and beautiful beyond words that keeps me coming back again and again every year. Merry Christmas everyone.
Rather than being "religious," it is best to be righteous, gained only by repentance of sin and and confession that Jesus is Lord and belief that He bled and died on a miserable cross for YOUR sins (and mine, of course). Jesus said, You must be born again (spiritually), to get into God's kingdom, since HE is a spirit. Merry Christmas, and God bless!
I heard this song for the first time tonight. And it is very beautiful and has the meaning of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ who died on the cross. Hallelujah price the lord

Oh - I know what prompted it: a FB message that prayed that the Christ child be born again in us tonight. I love this song, and the later teachings of that little baby boy.
I heard this song for the first time yesterday 12/23/2022 on Sirius radio. I was getting ready to change the station when I heard that it was a Christmas song done by the Band. That got my attention and I decided to listen to it. To the Band I say Thank You! Thank you for recognizing the true meaning of Christmas. I loved the fact that a rock band has the faith to produce such a great Christian Christmas song! It is a great Christmas song and I will listen to it every Christmas that I am alive. Merry Christmas to all, and especially to the members of the Band.
@@danielmorehouse9116 Robbie was given the name Jaime Royal Robertson. Jesus came into the world not to condemn it but to save it. Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Jesus is the Reason for the Season. Praise the Lord. Thank you Jesus. Emanuel. HALLELUJAH to the Lamb of God.
In a world that is increasingly full of unhappiness and outright hatred, the message of this song resonates ever more deeply. Hate is an exhausting emotion. Like its wingman anger, they wear you out. They’re hard on the body, mind, and soul. We’re not meant to wallow in them. As it is written in Desiderata, “Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.”
I taught Sunday school, kindergarteners, for eleven years. I learned a lot about Christianity then, and this song captures the essence of the Holy Nativity better than most. The Miracle was not for kings and the wealthy, the Angels told simple herdsmen, "fear not, but rejoice in the newborn Christ.". The end of the beginning--- to explain the true miracle to five year olds, I would tell them that people lived in fear, and the miracle of Jesus was people could live with hope. This is one of my all time favorite Christmas songs, right up there with Noel or Sliver Bells. Happy holidays to all, for peace on earth and goodwill to all.!
Ronnie Hawkins hired Garth Hudson because he was a Classically Trained Musician with a Uiversity degree in musical theory. Ronnie figured Garth could elevate everyone and add some polish to there Act! Good Call! RIP Robbie, Rick, Richard and Levon!

What a BAND, truly a fantastic collection of five amazing men with so much feeling in their voices and so sad that only two of them survive today... Im not a Christian though I grew up in that faith, and I believe Jesus was a Jew studying both the Buddhist and Hindu faiths and then put his own spin on that and did a great job in doing so. Merry Christmas one and all.
What I love so much about this Christmas song more than others in popular forms of music is how the Band manages to actually incorporate the story of Christmas in the song. It is told with artistic grace and melodic and lyrical warmth, making it an ideal, sonic Yuletide delight.
The Original Version here, is a Masterpiece! They recorded an Alternate version later on, it doesn't have the same Rythm, Flow and Feeling! It's Crap in my opinion!

What a great song. Lovely melody and, most importantly, powerful lyrics. Listen closely, think on what they are singing, and your life can be transformed forever. Good stuff. What the holiday is supposed to be all about.
Here's why I think this song is so great; it's personal. The man singing the song is there. It's happening and he doesn't really understand and he takes us there with him. That moment when He was born. It's the only Christmas song that's sung in the first person. I love this song.

Come down to the manger, see the little stranger
Wrapped in swaddling clothes, the prince of peace
Wheels start turning, torches start burning
And the old wise men journey from the East
How a little baby boy bring the people so much joy
Son of a carpenter, Mary carried the light
This must be Christmas, must be tonight
A shepherd on a hillside, where over my flock I bide
Oh a cold winter night a band of angels sing
In a dream I heard a voice saying "fear not, come rejoice
It's the end of the beginning, praise the new born king"
I saw it with my own eyes, written up in the skies
But why a simple herdsmen such as I
And then it came to pass, he was born at last
Right below the star that shines on high
Lo, the Prince of peace,
And behold , wise men...
