I do not think I would because you need the antibacterial properties for preserving the mixture with sugar. I guess if you used a super high proof rum you could try it. Just don't want yuckies growing.
I am making it for the first time, in Germany. And I guess the difference is that here people add the fruit gradually based on the season they are out. So first strawberries with the sugar and rum, they cover it. Leave it ik the dark, then a few days or weeks later cherries and so on. So the fruit is not as bulky when you add more fruit. Just something I learned here. 😉😊
I would do the same here, however to make a video would take 6 months. :) In season is definitely the way to go. Also, in California fruit is almost always in season.
@@EudaemoniusMarkII true. Am from Southern Cali. Just mentioned it because the proportions make more sense in the "original way" , because the fruit is not as plump when adding more things. But I understand the video part of course..
I legit just made one after watching this. Had a ton of rum by accident, and a huge jar I make sun tea in, so I just ran to the store for fruit and now it'll be ready for Christmas! Can't wait to "enjerr" this!
A rum pot should always start with the first seasoned fruit, rum and a little sugar. Then add fruit as they come into season. Repeat layers of fruit and sugars. Never squash them down and never in a clear glass jar, it should be stored in a large glazed pottery with a lid. Advent is the time to start dishing it out, either pure or over good vanilla ice cream…so delicious!
Well, yes to all that in a traditional way. However in California, fruit is always in season, glass jars make much more interesting looking videos, and leaving air gaps makes mole here. :)
That is a really colorful looking Rumtopf filled with all of the different colored fruits. I just received a wonderful German clay Rumtopf from a lifelong family friend, the Rumtopf was her fathers. He was known to me as "Onkel Helmut". Good memories of visits, especially of the holidays. Filled it yesterday with peaches and pineapple. Looking forward to sharing during the holidays!

@@EudaemoniusMarkII I'll let you know around Christmas. Think I'll disolve sugar in some hot water let it cool then add, see have a plan already. Cheers Andy 😁
I really enjoyed your video and the Rumtopf looks great! I also like the pretty jar and the fruit choice, blackberries are my favourite. :D I got hold of a 3 liter Weck jar (about 3/4 gallon) and I'm going to give it a try. But I'm a bit worried about the amount of sugar, do you know maybe if the sugar goes in to preserve the fruit or just for the taste? It seems like the alcohol would be enough to keep the contents from going bad. So maybe I could add stevia leaves instead. :)
Well, hold in to your boots, a Blackberry video is coming in a few weeks! Thanks for the compliments. Yes, you can decrease the sugar, but do up the booze, as you want to kill all possible pathogens. Let me know how it works for ya?
@@EudaemoniusMarkII Ohhh wonderful, I'm looking forward to that! :D Yumyum. You also explain everything really well and make it fun to watch. Thank you for the advice too and I'll definitely let you know. :) I actually never had rum before, so it will be interesting. :D
@@EudaemoniusMarkII I made it today! :D I used 700 g fruit (plums, grapes, pears and peaches, unfortunately I missed the season for strawberries and cherries) , 350 g brown sugar and a bottle of rum. I messed it up a bit, because apparently 37,5% is not enough, so I'll have to buy some more with a higher alcohol content, and the peach pieces are swimming on the surface, I'll find something to keep them down though. My 3 liter jar is only half full, but that's enough, so I will only add a few berries and wait for Christmas. :)
Love the video, but you’ve made this crazy complicated by adding the fruits first then trying squeeze the sugar in 😁 Personally I layer the fruit with sugar and rum, it’s a little easier and the sugar doesn’t end up at the bottom. nevertheless it’s a brilliant video, very interesting and clear. Hope you enjoyed at thanksgiving
Well, I did not know how much fruit was going to fit in the container, being that it was new. Also, did not know how much rum it would take to fill it either. Could have been easier, but showing the work around if fun, and teaching people that they CAN do it is my game. Love that you are here!
OMG.....Looks good, But to much sugar for me !!!!I I'd only use about 2 cups, just ME.....BUT then i have never done this before ........cant wait to see results
Can I make Rumtopf with stevia?

Thanks for the video. Santa you're handsome. thanks for the recipe. can't wait to get started on my Rumtopf.
You are very welcome!

Last time I made this I dissolved the Sugar etc in the Rum prior to pouring it in so I didn't have to worry about mixing it in the jar.
Protip! Yeah, I think I will too.
Thanks 👍

I made this using 75% Rum. Should that be good or is that too aggressive of a proof?
That looks incredible bit my blood sugar just jumped 150 points looking at all that sugar. Lol
I always use rum that is 60% w/w, by X-mes it's down to 25-30%ish w/w
You what the alcohol to prevent germination of microbiology.
Nice hot tip! I like that. Will have to try next time. Thank you.
Must Try!!!
Wow. Love it
Thanks for being here Ahmed!
Perfect timing to find this video.
I will start this this week in a couple of my half gallon Mason jars!!!

Gail, you could reduce the sugar is you like, or when serving mix with some water or seltzer for a lighter cocktail. I hope you give it a try!
