I totally agree! It's a shame they have to be hidden inside an enclosure. They deserve to be shown off.

A piece of art indeed! You could show it off by using clear perspex/plexiglass and glueing the pieces together. I have this on my mind for some time now.
You'd probably need the shape of the box to dampen instead of using the usual damping material.

Great review , wish you could do the same for the ScanSpeak 12MU/8731T00 , very nice 4 inch mid that I would love to use in an open baffle application (so rear radiation measurement is appreciated )
What size sealed enclosure does it need to play from 70hz and up? I'm looking for a midwoofer to play from 70 to 400 on a sealed enclosure of about .20cf for my car and it's been really difficult.

Thanks. I'm an engineer. BS in aerospace. Worked as a NASA propulsion systems test engineer for a couple years. Then switched over to other work. (TH-cam isn't my dayjob)
Ah... Very cool. Do you know fellow audiophile, NASA engineer and youtuber (XRK Audio) Dr. Viet Nguyen? He builds some pretty trick stuff... Could use your advice on selecting a mid bass driver. Love the sound of scan-speak revelator. Wondering if you have ever heard a mid bass driver with a similar sound for less money. Appreciate your advice!
Hello. Whats the difference on models 18wu4741 and 4747? Specs looks almost same to me. Planning them on my car 3way front end in sealed enclosures.
Hey Arin, have you tested the 18WU/8747? Looking at all there 7” the 4741 8ohm driver models best for a midbass in a small sealed enclosure for a 3 way but the 8747 aluminum cone 4 ohm is not far behind. Also high sensitivity in comparison Curious of your thoughts which would be best.
Either will get around 400 watts per driver.

Im not sure if you could help me I would like to build myself the best top 3 way possible (covering to 40hz).. what are the best drivers would you recommands.. that you tried and measured... is this your best for 40hz to 300hz? also what would be your best midrange and tweet?

It's a very nice driver for a paper cone. Other than the cone-surround related issues in 800-1.5kHz.

I tried the aluminum cone version years back but as dedicated midbass.
A friend mine designs underhanged proprietary drivers for OEM, and his 6.5" Alu cone midbass is very clean, with 26mm p-p Xmax, efficiency in 85-86dB/W, however it needs to be crossed in 1.5kHz region to get the best out of it. Unfortunately it's very expensive (big Neo based motor, thick cone with some tricks, etc) and available in rather limited numbers.
@@pliedtka You must be referring to Mark Kravchenko's drivers I assume? I own a pair of his 8's" (which have 28mm peak to peak) and they've been a delight to own. He produces an amazing product that easily matches Scan in quality (I would argue Mark's are better), and are more linear .

I think I saw the 8 incher you mentioned at Marks place. I live in Ottawa and we do some DIY projects from time to time if time allows, some mumbling how to improve driver design, etc. The driver I mentioned is a 6.5" frame underhanged motor, like the Scan, with ALU cone. Of course the Xmax figures are based on voice coil/ gap length, not on Klippel. It would be nice to see Klippel measurements. But from what I heard, it's a very clean driver.
What tweeters and cross over are you using with this in a car? Are they in custom enclosures?
I’m not using them in my car. I did at one point as a midbass from about 70-300Hz in kick panels.

I honestly don't recall if I did a comparison anywhere. I mean, I know I didn't do a dedicated one... but I might have talked about differences somewhere.
@@ErinsAudioCorner no problem. I've heard the Purifi has more clarity in the 1k-2k range, a bit of a stiffer sound like you'd get with metal cones but also the bass isn't very good.

Cool vid! Awesome drivers! What do you prefer between GB60 & these? I think the GB60 have 8 mm linear xmax. Are these baskets deeper than Audiofrog GB60? ( door fitment)
I have GB60 & GB15 on a helix dsp3 & been thinking about adding the gb40/ 25 or maybe adding another pair GB60 if the budget allows for custom door panels.
I run the GB60 75 Hz - 3000 Hz, have a measurement mic just learning REW & will measure w pink noise soon!
The GB60 has much less actual linear excursion than initially thought. It clocks in at 4.7mm one-way per the IEC standard. That said, it is very low in distortion in the midrange and for its size is a great midwoofer. I use it myself.

Yes, the SS W18U have a significantly deeper top mount depth compared to the GB60.
There are a few advantages that go to the GB60 for use IN A VEHICLE and when using traditional vehicle speaker mounting locations...
1. The noted mounting depth...in addition to the overall diameter.
2. Slightly higher extension before beaming or breakup, making them a bit more suitable for a 2-way front stage in a vehicle. (And as Erin said, less distortion in the midrange).
3. PP Cone, construction materials, and adhesives that are more suited to a vehicle environment...i.e. potentially very extreme heat and cold, and moisture when mounted in a common vehicle door.
4. The T/S specs are a bit more suited to common vehicle mounting locations when used in their intended passband.
5. The GB60 come with grills and extensive mounting hardware if needed, which can also be custom painted.
Although, Erin can speak more to #3 as IIRC he used the W18U in his '06 Civic's custom kickpanel/firewall that were IB with ~4" diameter vents that opened into the front wheel well exterior.
Downsides? They are both extremely expensive, as is the Purifi PT6.5 that Erin also reviewed. You've got to Pay To Play. Though I believe the 8 ohm version of the PT6.5 is currently on sale at Madisound.
The GB60/GB15 are a fantastic 2-way setup when installed and tuned properly.
As a side note, if you haven't already, you might want to watch Erin's video about using your subwoofer(s) to enhance and supplement your mid bass output and performance, especially once you get some time in measuring with REW.
Adding a second pair of GB60 might not get you that far if you have the issues that Erin discusses in that video.
My underhung woofer has a greater linear travel. But it is OEM only :)

It can do 26mm p-p, I had them in the enclosures at my place. The Neodymium magnet is triple the size of what Scan uses.

Send him one to test man. It will only take like 2 weeks and you'll have it back. Good as when you sent it to him.
Are scanspeak products intended for use in cars? Ive always seen only home audio products feature scanspeak. I imagine it takes some time to do all of your testing but it be entertaining to see the properties of a shitty say "Pyle" woofer of the same size in comparison.
Oh, yea. Tons of people in car audio use ScanSpeak products. Myself included. Numerous scanspeak stuff in my years.

Upside:
Higher sensitivity
More excursion
Lighter (neo motor)
More attractive front and backside
Downside:
Linear distortion (frequency response) not as smooth
Slightly higher non-linear distortion in midrange

Did you notice any mechanical/motor/suspension noise at significant excursion?
That is one thing that Lars @ Purifi noted that the PT6.5 does not exhibit and the W18U does.
But I suppose you aren't testing much beyond the test limits set when using the Klippel DA.
And to be honest, I've never experienced this issue with the W18U personally. And I even used it with a "not recommended" 40Hz 1st order HP for a bit. :-P
I also don't remember you mentioning any such issues when using them in your '06 Civic, and you're obviously known to "pump up the volume" a fair bit, so there's that.

@bb foto none at all. I was actually thinking about this last night; I need to mention this in my writeup. The 18wu is extremely silent even at very long excursion.
@@bbfoto7248 I've used the 18wu aluminum and paper versions. They have near zero suspension noise that I've seen. Not sure what the guy from Purifi is on about.
