    Първоначално практикувана от черните роби в Бразилия, днес капоейра е разпостранена по цял свят. В африканските култури танц и борба трудно могат да бъдат разделени едни от други. От там и многото танцови и акробатични елементи в капоейрата.
    Легендата разказва, че на робите в Бразилия е било забранено да се бият по между си, за да не се контузват (Господарите си пазели "стоката"). За да разрешават конфликтите си по физически начин, боят бил превърнат във формата на танц. Думата "capoeira" означава "висока трева".
    Подобно на Капоейра в области с африкански роби възникват други форми на бойни танци. Например в Куба е разпостранен танцът Мани.
    Първоначалните форми на капоейра може да се разглеждат като разновидност на улични боеве. Капоейристите се събирали в банди в крайбрежните градове на Бразилия: Рио де Жанейро, Ресифе, Салвадор де Баия. Предполага се, че днешната капоейра е доста по-различна, от това, което се е практикувало в големите бразилски градове в началото на 20ти век.
    В периода 1889 - 1937 тренирането на капоейра в Бразилия е било забранено и се е наказвало от 6 месеца до 2 години. Не толкова поради естестеството на капоейра, а поради опасения, че капоейристите могат да пречат на сигурността. Голяма част от тях били престъпници и рекетьори. Поради това капоейра се смятала за атрибут на уличния бияч.
    През 1937 диктаторът Хетулио Варгас премахва забраната с надеждата да превърне капоейра в национален спорт. Тази идея му хрумва, след демострация от местре Бимба, който модифицира уличната капоейра във формата на Luta Regional Baiana. В този стил той интегрира елементи на батуке и на азиатски бойни изкуства, за да увеличи ефективността. Преди да се въведе система за изучаване, капоейра се изучавала предимно с подражаване. Изхождайки от новата система, капоейра се разделя на две основни течения: капоейра режионал и капоейра ангола. Ангола, популяризирана от местре Пащиня, твърди, че е по-близка до африканските корени на капоейра.
    Голяма част от школите по капоейра практикуват капоейра контемпоранеа, което е смесен вариант между ангола и режионал.
    По традиция играта се води в кръг (порт. roda). В "началото" на кръга стоят музикалните изпълнители. Главните инструменти са биримбау (порт. berimbau) и пандейро (порт. pandeiro).
    Освен бойният аспект, музикалният също е много важен. Учат се умения като ритъм, пеене, свирене. За пеенето на песните е важно да се разбира поне малко португалски.
    Капоейра, като всяко бойно изкуство, има своята философия. Учи капоейристите на взаимоуважение и положителна нагласа към живота (винаги усмихнат). Освен това човек има възможност да опознае възможностите на тялото си и да преоткрива артистичността си.

    This is an AWESOME tutorial!!!My class lasts an hour and I'm doing well(well,relatively),but by the time I come home I can't remember not a single move I'm supposed to be practicing at home.This tutorial has everything I need!THANK YOU SO MUCH!

      I understand. Best to focus on 2 or 3 and get them right before adding additional movements.

    I'm doing capoeira lessons but since I went in the middle after they already started I have to learn from watching and because it was so fast I had no idea what I was doing and felt embarrassed but I feel like because of this I'll know what I have to do and not feel like a complete fool thankyou/ obrigada mestro

    Be careful of the side neck stretch. I’d recommend just using the weight of your head for the stretch, hold it for 10 seconds, each side. I’m a yoga teacher and have heard of people hurting themselves with that particular stretch ✌🏼❤️

      Not only that, 'static' stretching should only be done when muscles are warm, ie _after_ exercising. They should not be used as a 'warm up'.
      PS - I just sat in on a Zoom exercise class targeting seniors, and the instructor did that side neck stretch. I won't be joining it again. : /

    I really don't understand how can a person with that much body mass can do such movement plz I need to understand cause I am learning kaleripayattu at age of 35 with less body mass and it is giving me a problem my weight is less than 65 kg, but still I love it thank you teacher

      with time and practice your body will adapt to the movements. it doesn't really have anything to do with body mass. i believe it has to do with how many times you stimulate the nerves when doing the movement. i did one style of martial arts about 25 years ago. I just now began a different style. so i understand where your thoughts are coming from. take care and keep at it!!

    just started 2 das ago and been practicing Ginga, Equiva lateral and de fronte, Negativa, Rollemento, bencao, meia lua, AU, and now some of these movements. It is a cardio and legworkout :)

      No such thing as too old. You do what your body lets you do and you'll improve over time. You may not improve as fast as a teenager, but I've seen 60-year-olds earn black belts in several martial arts. Don't use age as an excuse!

      @@kma3647 You are absolutely right! I'm almost 70 years old and just had my second capoeira class today, including my first roda with the instructor. I'll probably never be able to do the flips and cartwheels like my grandkids (capoeira fanatics), but it's still a great workout for strength and flexibility at any age.

    Remember, this is not a warm up, if your body is not warm.
    Try doing some running before doing this stretches especially neck stretches

    7:14 why "hand below the chin" ? wouldn't it make more sense to cover and protect the chin by lifting the forearm an inch or so?

      Captain687 You can twist your.ankle badly with weights on legs especially knees will be jostled and can be torn by having that weight your foot will sometime not move and knee can be torn
      Just saying go slow .
