How Different Brands of Ammunition Affect Accuracy Presented by Larry Potterfield of MidwayUSA

  • One of the facts of life is that different brands of factory ammunition will provide different levels of accuracy in the same rifle. The only way to determine which shoots best in your rifle is by spending some time at the range. Watch as Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA demonstrates this principle.

    Important unless you shoot AKs, then the most critical factor is "How cheaply can I get a case of 1000 rounds".

      Exactly same goes for my AR47 that I set up right with the correct buffer spring, weighted buffer, strengthened hammer spring, and AK spec firing pin. It has eaten every Russian ammo I've fed after those mods.
      Also My HK91 is the same way. Give it the cheapest 308/7.62x51 and we are good to go. I absolutely love Prvi Partizan SPBT for hunting in it. Great to have rifles you can go and shoot in this high priced ammo economy while also being able to hunt with them if you want.

      Pretty much anything Russian made, if it ships and is cheap, it will be shot. Whether if its 7.62x54r or 7.62x39.

      Get a "valmet" m62/s aka an rk 62, and then lets see if an ak can't be accurate. Milled military versions are rated to have good accuracy after 20k rounds (Semi auto civilian versions are basically the same rifle, with no full auto. Dunno about the sights though)... Source is an old Finnish book from the 80's, can't sadly remember its name nor writer. Though from my own experience the iron sights still had good accuracy to about 300 meters. And my service rifle was from 1972...
      Although we used Lapua's cartridges, which are probably the best ak rounds. (And super expensive :D)

    It pays in many ways to reload. Tailor that cartridge to work with the firearm

  • @oldgoat1890
    @oldgoat1890 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is very true. I picked up a 99 Savage in .243 and did not want to reload for it. So, I picked up a box each of the "Big three" and went to the range. At 100 yards, the Winchester threw about an 8" group and had sticky extraction. Same with the Federal. I had checked the gun out before using it. The brass looked good. I could see a slight flat area right on the primer radius. I thought I had a lemon. I tried the Remington and it went right down to under an inch. I could flick the lever open with two finger. Apparently the Winchester and Federal were loaded so hot that it was springing the receiver. It would never been noticed in a bolt gun.

    • @commenter4799
      @commenter4799 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought I got a lemon because some ammo was 3-4 inches when the guy said it was half MOA. I tried yet another brand and got 1.25". I thought it was the scope or rifle or whatever else, but I never knew ammo could cause two or three times the group size.

    @FutureMarine246 When Hornady loads a round, it has to fit every firearm ever chambered for that caliber. When I handload a round, it only has to fit one. Mine. That way, I get to control critical variables like bullet jump. Accuracy is everything.

    I stay with the same brand for several boxes when sighting in, and seeing if the results remain stable. It's interesting when trying a different brand, other than how well it feeds or burns, if it's shooting higher or lower at the distance I've sighted in. A bit of online research, as I don't always see the velocity on the box, usually explains.

    I started hand loading back in 1972 for my Win .243. I eventually moved up to a 30-06 Remington 760 which I hand loaded for also. Once I found the right powder/bullet combination I could shoot 3 shots through a dime size hole at 100 yds. Pretty good for a pump. I still use that load in that rifle.

    • @waynegroves6922
      @waynegroves6922 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coincidence - I, too, started loading in '72. My reloads were .17 Remington, .44 Special, .357 Magnum/.38 Special. That .17 Remington, out of the box, was about 4,200fps. I reloaded them a tad hotter; when the primers started puffing up, I knew to back it off a grain or two. Out of the box, with factory ammo, and a Redfield 12x, I put five rounds through the same hole at a hundred yards. I really regret selling that. I paid $250 for the Remington at Camp Pendleton's Main PX, then $125 for the Redfield at a gun shop in Oceanside.

      You must have missed the part at the beginning, where Larry nicely demonstrates how different brands of ammo with different bullets seat in the chamber and position their respective bullets differently in the leade (unrifled portion of the barrel immediately before the rifling starts) that will affect accuracy.

    Back several years ago I purchased a Ruger Mark II in 30-06, purchased a box of Winchester 150gr ammo, and headed to the range. I shot several three shot groups at 100 yards, and the average group size was around 2 inches.. I was very disappointing in the rifle at this point.. When a friend said something I'd never heard before.. He said, "You're gun doesn't like that ammo much, does it." He suggested I try another brand, and I purchased some Federal, and a box of Remington Core Locked. I began with the Federal, and it was actually worse than the Winchester, with groups as large as 2 1/2 inches.. I then tried the Remington, and to my surprise, my three shot groups tightened-up to the size of a dime.. I couldn't believe it, but I was pleasantly surprised.

      Lee Smith I noticed then my tikka t3 30-06 shot 8g bullets about 2,5 cm group. But when I fire almost eny heavyer 11,7g or 13g bullets, it gets 11mm to 15mm groups (4 shots-100m).

      +Lee Smith exactly same problem here, same model gun, the m77 mark ii, however i had the Varmint version in 243, got her cheap enough to the point where i figured something was wrong with it. tested it with some 100 grain rems and feds and had a 4 inch group at 100 yards off a lead sled. Someone showed me this video about this, so I bought some hornady 58 grains and now shoot sub .5 inch moa off lead sled. saved my rear end with this video

    A very difficult story alltogether. I am a reloader and even a change of powder or bullet will definitely affect the group you shoot. Each cartridge is different, particularly on long distance (over 300 mtrs). Barrel temperaure, outside temperature and compass direction will also guarantee differences.

    • @OminousPinapple
      @OminousPinapple 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "compass direction"
      Umm.. how?

    • @damoncrowfeather4655
      @damoncrowfeather4655 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      OminousPinapple It's called "The Coriolis Effect".. The Earth rotates from west to east on it axis.. Therefore, when a bullet leaves the barrel of a rifle, it is leaving the face of the earth, and the earth is moving while the bullet is traveling to the target. Shooting from east to west at long rang, say 1000 yrds, by the time the bullet strikes the target, the target has actually moved farther away and the shot will be low.. Shooting west to east, the distance to the target will be shortened, and the shot will be high.. Shooting north to south, and the shot will be off to the right.. Shooting south to north, the shot will be off to the left.

    • @OminousPinapple
      @OminousPinapple 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lee Smith Well the bullet is already travelling in the same direction at the same speed as the earth is rotating, so due to conservation of inertia, isn't the "north-south" not worth accounting for due to the target also moving at the same speed.. If you were to go super far distances (eg if you were talking about an EM Rail Gun) then yes the position of the shooter and the target being at different longitudes would have an interesting effect (far beyond my current stage of understanding) would it not? Thoughts?

    • @damoncrowfeather4655
      @damoncrowfeather4655 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember the key is the earth is continuing to rotate after the bullet leaves the barrel.. Thus, from the time the bullet leaves the barrel, and the time it reaches the target.. the earth, and the target resting on it will have moved slightly from its original position, that was fired at by the shooter. This would only come into play on extremely long shots.. say over a thousand yrds. This effect is well understood by snipers that have to figure this factor into an extremely long range shot.

    Larry potterfield is so cool, it's almost like hes nerdy, but hes such a nerd that hes actually a freakin cool bad a** because hes so g****** smart and knows what hes doing so good that I'm like, mesmerize watching. Him I love how he says at the end of it and that's the way it is and more. I wouldn't argue if Larry potterfield says that's the way it is, I'm going with that.

    Larry is out there skipping bullets into the next zip code with not back stop

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      “know what's behind your target” doesn't mean “only shoot of there's a back stop”. It means “only take the shot if you know there's nothing behind your target you don't mind killing” and since all I saw dying was his beautifully manicured lawn, he's good (as for skip, he's clearly shooting into a rise or hill so nothings going to skip).

    • @BackwoodsMayhem
      @BackwoodsMayhem 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see no clear rise anywhere in this video, unless a bullet is capture in a berm it can go anywhere after impacting the ground at such a low angle

      besides the fact that every chamber has worn different... every barrel has worn different. during production, the tooling wears out, tolerances grow.
      its IMPOSSIBLE to say "brand X is the best ammo for any gun".
