  • Hello everyone and welcome to our first video on this channel! This video is about a new way we dispatch our rabbits. In no way shape or form are we trying to upset anyone by making this video. We found this to be the most humane way to dispatch a rabbit without causing them to freak out. We hope someone finds this video to be useful!

    Thank you. I don’t personally eat rabbits, I have them as pets. But I actively advocate against choke chains and hopper poppers because it has just been proven that the brain remains conscious for 10-30 seconds after any type of decapitation or neck breaking. This is VERY humane, and a great technique. Very well done sir

    This is 1000% the smoothest, calmest, most efficient, most humane rabbit dispatch I’ve ever seen! Definitely will be doing it this way now. Well done man, and fantastic share, thank you!

    Wow! I think that's how I am going to do it. I have not actually dispatched a rabbit yet but have watched a ton of videos to find the way that seems to be most comfortable for me. And I think this is it! Thank you so much for posting

    Thanks for this I am not happy doing the bopper method. Though bleed out is more efficient with an active cardiac pump.

    Very well done. Thank you guys.
    I have to agree with you. I've done the broomstick method which does work, but still the animal is stressed for a bit.
    I'm going to need to give this a try.

      Thank you and glad it helped!! We’ll be doing more videos soon. Had to many irons in the fire lately. We’ll be videoing an on farm chicken processing this Saturday.

      @@smithheritagefarmllc4502 Hey! One more clarifying question if you don't mind...I ended up getting one of the tools from your link.
      I want to be sure I understand where you're placing it behind the ears. Is it between the ears or lower down at the base of the skull?
      Is there any particular angle you try and achieve?

    • @smithheritagefarmllc4502
      @smithheritagefarmllc4502  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GraceAppliance I generally choose between the ears attempting to penetrate the base of the skull or sever the spinal cord from the skull. I have also had good results with the forehead between the eyes and ears. Imagine if and X were drawn between the eyes and base of the ears. I’ve grown to prefer this to base of the skull personally.

      @@smithheritagefarmllc4502 thanks very much! Yes, it seems like the brain would be closer from the front of the head, but clearly your method works wonderfully as well. I'll give it a go.
      I appreciate the help greatly.

      Finally got to use your method today for 5 rabbits.
      This is 100% the best way. Instantaneous and stress free. 5 for 5 and made it so much less stressful for the animal and my wife as well.
      Thanks again!

    I agree it's so much better than choke chain and hopper popper. The pin for tool you provided the link to only extends about 1/4" versus the one you used which looks like about 3/4". What brand was the one you have? Maybe it's available now.

    Is the rabbit calm because theyve been handled a lot? Not sure if its a breed thing? Just started looking into to all this.

    • @smithheritagefarmllc4502
      @smithheritagefarmllc4502  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sarah our rabbits aren’t pets. We don’t handle them or pet them. They’re checked daily but not touched except for breeding, relocating, or processing. We’ve tried basically every method out there as we’ve been raising rabbits for meat for almost 20yrs. We have the hopper poppers etc but it stresses the rabbits out. We believe adrenaline effects the meat quality. Prior to this our preferred method was a pellet gun. Set them on the ground in some nice grass and do the deed. They’re happy until the last second.

    I have been trying to find a nail punch with a long enough extension, most are less than one half inches which may not be long enough. Does anyone know how long the extension needs to be? If anyone finds a punch with an adequate extension, please include the link... Thank you!

    The punch gun you listed on amazon only comes out 1/4”, so probably not enough for this procedure.

    • @carolinacontingencyllc7809
      @carolinacontingencyllc7809 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s correct and completely sufficient as you can see on camera. Prior to this we used a pellet gun for years but waste pellets and potentially introduce lead to the circulatory system. This is our preffered method and I’ve raised rabbits for meat for well over a decade. Sorry for the response from our preparedness channel vs farm channel.

      @@carolinacontingencyllc7809 but doesn’t the gun you showed in the video come out 3/4”? Are you sure 1/4” will do the job?

    • @smithheritagefarmllc4502
      @smithheritagefarmllc4502  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidprothro6763 I may have misunderstood the 1/4” is the diameter of the stud which extends at least a 1/2” but seems closer to 3/4” . We have a processing class coming up. I’ll measure the length of the extended stud and the diameter of it and do my best to post the results or a video. Thanks for the reply/feedback!!

      @@smithheritagefarmllc4502 No worries, want to be as humane as possible to our bunnies. I think I found a gun from AliExpress that will work. It’s on a slow boat from China so won’t know till early November, but the video they showed of the operation was 1/2” to 3/4 inch extension beyond the exit port. However, you may want to remove the gun you recommend on this video, as that gun from Amazon only extends 1/4”. I didn’t use it, and am returning it, as I doubt it would do the job required.

    • @smithheritagefarmllc4502
      @smithheritagefarmllc4502  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidprothro6763 thanks for the feedback I’ll see if I can figure out how to remove the link. I’m not exactly a TH-cam expert…my daughter has helped me a lot in the past. Curious did you hook the gun you received up and test fire it to see stud length? I do remember that I couldn’t find the particular gun I use online and so found one that looked similar under the assumption that a lot of products are mass produced and just painted different colors and different brand names slapped on them. As soon as I find mine (lost in construction mess) I’ll check it and follow up. Thanks!
