Thank you for watching!
Sheryl and Paul
Nick's right. You are the goto guy and gal. Your framing of shots is awesome from the many years of experience. There are many sailing vids now but you guys were the first. It's nice you are still sharing your knowledge and experiences.
Thanks so much for the kind words Dave❤️💕 we’re still having fun!!!
Nice job guys. Its cool you were able to meet up with Ruby Rose. I enjoy watching
all their stuff. Like Nik always says "Anyway" ....See you soon!
Thanks for your comment, Darryl. We're looking forward to sailing with you this autumn!
Ruby Rose. Great couple and full of laughs. Love their channel.
Great video and I'm glad you caught up with the crew from SV Ruby Rose. Another great video blog
Great video, love watching these two sailing channels!
This was a very nice episode Paul, with those neat sailing shots of your awesome Distant Shores III and with Nick and Terysa also on their Southerly yacht....love those swinging keel Southerly's! Two great sailing channels together again.....
Thanks Ed👍 we have a new remote gimbal that helps steady up those shots! Glad you enjoyed it ❤️
Two of our favorite sailing TH-cam channels together! Awesome!! Great video. Thank you.
Thanks for your kind words, Thomas! Nick and Terysa are great fun! It's always a pleasure to meet up with them and follow their videos.
Thanks watch both your chanels good ro see u both together
Love Ruby Rose channel also.
I started following you when you took the Cat across the Atlantic, and have watched, (lurked) as you went through the transition to D.S.III. A pure layman when it comes to sail, I can only say that your new vessel is clearly one you both thought about for a long time and it appears you have it exactly as you wanted it, and it is performing as expected. Your camera work is top notch and your narration the same.
Thanks for taking us along, I am now hooked.
Welcome aboard Arch :-) Glad you're enjoying our videos!
Well said Nick, Distant Shores is my go inspiration too. Slowly working my way through the Supper Pack as I make my way around the UK and maybe further next season.
The Balearic islands look like dream cruising grounds. Safe travels.
Yes, it was the first time we'd cruised there in high season but since the weather is generally calm it makes many more open-roadstead anchorages available so room for all. The most popular anchorages they have added moorings which reduces anchoring stress and allows for more boats to enjoy them. All in all a great experience sailing there this summer!
Sweet sweet sailing!
Oh no! We missed you! So nice to see you four together :)
Hi Sheryl and Paul.
My wife and I are big fans. You know one of the things we'd love to see you both do is a video(s) about man overboard and how you would be recovered if you accidentally fell overboard. And better if you were fully clothed and tethered. How would you get back on board if you fell overboard while tethered. Food for thought
I also wanted to thank you. I started a TH-cam channel about a month ago and hope to launch it around the end of January. It will be a channel dedicated to sailing Cat Boats in New England. And you have been a big inspiration to me. Your videography, editing, drone photography is stunning, and I am learning a ton from you. Many many thanks.
Best,

Good suggestion on the MOB video! Now we're in warm water again we'll put that on the project list. Thanks Jim & Donna
Very nice. 👍👍👍 love to give it ago
Fantastic video! You could easily make your videos 20 plus minutes and I would be totally content. The waters around the Balearic Islands are amazing..... Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Bill :-) Glad you enjoyed it!
Those composite sails are really quite something. It looks like you were close hauled, and making good speed upwind.
Yes, it was a big decision to go for these sails but so far we're loving them! They hold their shape well and are pleasing to the eye when sailing. We'll see how they hold up in the tropical sun but reports are good and the mainsail furls beautifully.
I find simple furniture slide tape between floor boards works well to stop those creaks :)
Interesting! I'll give it a try! I'd never heard of that before. Thx
Really nice video.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it, David.
Hello nice video looking for the next.
We'll keep the videos coming! 😊 So glad that you are enjoying them!
I noticed the windows were covered in some of the day shots. Why is this? Love your series!
We have window coverings to keep heat out of the boat... you can see out through them but most of the heat stays out of the boat on those how Med days :-)
Distant Shores TV Thanks
Such a gorgeous boat . The question now that you've been on it for a few months, what is your review on it? What would you have changed,or not..m.. The big question is those sails...oh the sexy sexy sails ....are they really worth that extra cost .
See how Nik remained a bit in the back seat....during the interview ...I think he was afraid his standup comedic personality might have taken over the interview. And no beer in hand .....we were safe;)
Look forward to more
Fair winds
Thanks, Jim. We'll be writing a more detailed review after we've sailed the boat a few more miles but we love how the boat sails, especially with the Epex sails which hold their shape well which is good for the in-mast furling mainsail. We are enjoying the comfort of the layout too with the large aft cabin, spacious forward cabin as well and bunk room with good sea berths. I, Sheryl, particularly like the u-shaped galley near the companionway. The only changes we have made is to the stern rail, replacing the one huge gate with 2 smaller ones by adding a middle post for safety at sea. It adds another much needed hand hold when climbing up the transom too. Glad you enjoyed the interview with Nick and Terysa!
beautiful boat congratulations!! what size (weight) is that Ultra anchor?
Thanks, Brett! Our Ultra anchor is 35 kg (77 lbs.) We've just started using it and so far are very pleased with it. We'll write a Tech Blog review when we've used it a few times in strong conditions. It's still early days...
Couple of my favourite channels together, awesome, hope there is more interaction between ya, we will get to view
great video, can I ask why you didn't have davits added to your boat? was it just cost, aesthetics or something else? thanks
Thanks Pete!
We did consider davits but decided against them in the end. Although we like the idea of davits for cruising short distances we felt we would still need to carry the dinghy on deck for passages anyway. So its seemed redundant and would have added weight aft. We proceeded to make a Solar arch aft (just installed last week) and it would have needed to be much heavier if it was also to support a dinghy. We'll show the finished project shortly :-)
What anchoring app do you use?
A charming couple those Ruby Rose people, and, Nick shaved. Those were some crowded anchorages you got into. Thanks for the video :-)
Yes, Nick and Terysa are a delightful couple and Ruby Rose is a great boat. It's always fun to catch up with them. Glad you enjoyed the video.
👍👍
Nice video
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi guys,
My wife and I are really enjoying all your adventures, and we are living vicariously through you (not sure if you realize that, but I'll bet everyone that is subscribed to you is doing the same thing).
We've been big fans of your channel for years, and I think we go back to the beginning. You are an incredible inspiration to us.
I wanted to take a moment to thank you for a completely different reason. As a "man overboard" instructor for the U.S. Power Squadrons, it is driving me crazy how many people, who are sailing around the world and doing TH-cam videos, don't wear pfd's often enough. But you and Sheryl do and I think that is great.
I think it would be really interesting if you and Sheryl would consider doing a video on the subject of handling a "man overboard" scenario and how you prepare for it.
I want you (and others watching this channel) to think about this scenario. One of you randomly falls overboard while just off shore. Can the other single-handedly recover you, especially if you are unconscious? Even when the seas are relatively calm, this would probably be a challenge. Please think about that, and after you do, do a video about it.
I learned this lesson the hard way myself, when I accidentally got knocked overboard. I was embarrassed because I am a pretty experienced sailor. I was lucky. But afterwards, after thinking about different scenarios of what could have happened, now I teach the "man overboard" course to others as much as I can. It is extraordinarily difficult to get another back on board, if unconscious, when you are alone. Then think about the same scenario at night. It's pretty scary.
I also want you to practice falling overboard while tethered and with heavy clothing on. And try to get that on video as well. It would be amazing to see how well you can recover yourself and get yourself back on board while you are sailing in rough seas and/or travelling at a decent clip.
Food for thought.
Keep up the good work. I just started a TH-cam channel myself, and I am learning a whole lot from you. You are such extraordinary videographers.
You both set the standard for all others who are out doing what you do!!! We are incredibly envious.
Thanks and be safe out there.
Jim and Donna
Cat Boat Adventures
Thanks Cat Boat guys for the kind words!
I have purchased many of your TV seasons before I started watching TH-cam.. I wonder how you have found the transition to TH-cam vs your full length TV show media? I would think it is less time consuming? Less financially? I know you were really pioneers in the sailing real life shows. Now that this new media seems to be the norm how do you feel about it?
Thanks for your support over the years Tony! TH-cam is nice in many ways. It lets us reach a broad range of sailors who probably didn't receive one of the TV stations we were on, and we can get the shows out on our own schedule instead of waiting until we had a whole "Season" of 13 episodes. We edit shorter episodes which is quicker as you say, and then we use those episodes as a "rough edit" for the full length TV shows.
We also like the feedback we get from YT as it helps us know what people are most interested in and how we can better help viewers to achieve their own dreams.
Hey Cool! Thanks for the response. Nice that you can connect a little closer with your audience too I would think. But of course that is a double edge sword with random questions asked but still . Nice that you see a benefit for your full length TV episodes, fine tuning the content.
to that aim, the new boat stuff is great! Love learning the whole process of commissioning. I also enjoy details about how you anchor or trim your sails. Recently the new systems you are working with for the drive system is very interesting. Keep um coming and thanks for the thoughtful response.
Awesome vid guys what a sweet boat. Ruby Rose was the best on the net . then they censored Nick. Fawkers . Peace and be safe out there
Looking forward to more reports of your engine mounted generator tests, when do you think you'll do another report?
Thanks Mike. We're working on a video now on our electrical power system, including our batteries, charging, "engine mounted generator", solar power and all... should be done in a week or so when we get in to the Canary Islands :-)
I doubt there will be a response to this as most people's questions don't get answered on this channel...but every time i see a heeled video imagety of Distant Shores III there is ALWAYS (12:58 is the typical that i see on all videos) standing water on the deck that can't escape because there's no place for it to escape. What's the thinking having insufficient or maybe any scuppers in the sideboards? Is there any explanation other than poor design/planning?
Fun post...Hey Ruby Rose!
Hello. How much is your set of sails? Thank.
Forgive my ignorance... I’m no sailor! is that the keel were seeing at the end?
The boat has two rudders. In the last shot we're sailing heeled over so one of our two rudders comes a little out of the water ... don't worry its designed to do that when we heel over 15% or so.
Hello sir do u remember me,u say kapal in sarawak
Ruby Rose is right - Distant Shores is an inspiration.
⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓
Thanks Roger :-)
Roger K. Davis they are the Mother and Father of sailing and vlogging... 😊😊 Thank you Paul and Sheryl!
What was the name of the anchoring app you used?
The app is called "Anchor!" and is available through the Apple App Store. We've used it for a few years. Here is a blog Paul wrote about how we use it. Thanks for your question. www.distantshores.ca/boatblog_files/anchor-alarm-update.php
Why did you go with a mono. Why not a cat
