    yea the purpose of the song, choreography and music video was to be chaotic lol. they were proving a point to people who were hating on everything they did or saying they were doing too much. they were like saying we can do everything we want and pull it off too.

  • @racheljerusha
    @racheljerusha 2 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    Fun Fact: There's 7 easter eggs in the Idol choreography. At 2:34, 6 of them pose as an Avenger Superhero; Jin is the Hulk, Suga is the Black Panther, Jimin is Spider Man, V is IronMan, RM is Captain America and Jungkook is Thor. J-Hope was the only non-Marvel character. He was Anpanman.

    The video is purposely chaotic. They exaggerated the stereotypes that kpop has. Colourful mv, different outfits, backgrounds and stuff like that. Reading the lyrics gives a better understanding. RM says call me artist or idol he doesn't care. That's why they fully leaned into the stereotypes to show that they will do whatever they want regardless of what the haters say. And the choreo has a few African moves but it also has a lot of traditional korean dances as well and even that was intentional cuz people were saying that they're westernized so they did that to show people that they're korean and nothing will change that, that's also why they used traditional korean instruments in the song too.

    The MV was over the top on purpose. Check out the DKDKTV explanation video and you may appreciate it more when you understand all the Korean cultural elements. Also... keep in mind that this song was a big FU to their haters that kept saying they were becoming "Too Westernized"... hence the jam-packing of traditional Korean / kpop elements into the MV. They also had easter eggs such as Suga wearing a Snow White sweater since people kept saying he was "too pale" and V wearing slacks w/suspenders and big glasses since people kept saying he "dressed like a grandpa". If you rewatch the MV after watching and explanation vid and with the understanding that it's a middle finger and "hold my soju" response to criticism, I think you'll change your mind about the MV.

    • @cardiacarrest1670
      @cardiacarrest1670 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes basically every part of the video has either an homage to South Korean culture or a nod to their haters. All the shots with the guys multiplied were because people who first see them always make some comment about how there are so many members, RM with the filters on his face was because haters said they used filters, J-Hope with the inflatable man was because haters said he danced like that. It made me laugh immediately the first time I saw the Permission to Dance video with all the western wear and the setting because I knew they'd been getting a lot of heat for their English songs and that they were becoming too westernized. So in typical Bangtan style they went the whole nine for the haters. They're so awesome.

    I've always liked Idol-song, MV and dance-but I didn't fully appreciate it until I saw it performed live in concert. When you are in a high energy environment with 60,000- 70,000 people screaming-"You can't stop me loving myself!" This song is intense! BTS always says that they want to create a festival atmosphere with this song and it shines when performed live with people. There is no other feeling like being at a BTS concert.

    The video and song are meant to show off a bunch of different styles cause people criticized them for being "Americanized". It's just them showing they can do any style they want. It was made to look like a stereotypical idea of what K-pop is supposed to be and incorporated elements of traditional Korean, African and Bollywood elements.

    If you find this choreo taxing, I wonder how you will find their choreo for their live performances to Dionysus, mic drop (full dance break version) and On kinetic manifesto (MV). I believe 3 of the guys, Jimin, Jung Kook and Suga have background in martial arts training with Jimin holding a black belt in Taekwondo, trained in Kendo, Hapkido and Chinese martial arts, JK holds a red/black belt in taekwondo. I forgot what belt Suga holds in Taekwondo. I also believe Jin trained in taekwondo when he mentioned it casually but not as intense as Jimin so they have the discipline from their Martial arts training.

If you watch their burn the stage series on premium TH-cam, you can actually see some times when they are collapsing behind the stage, getting oxygen, having cold compresses put on them, and then going back on stage like nothings wrong. True professionals. They pour their heart and every performance.

    i think the difference between appropriation and cultural appreciation is very underestimated so i'll explain quickly.
    cultural appropriation is when you use a culture, make fun of that culture, make fun of the language or use it as synonymous with aesthetics and marketing.
    cultural appreciation is when you take your time to learn something about that culture, learn the traditional dance of that country, learn the language and actually enjoy the culture. and that's what bts did in idol, they learned an african dance step and they didn't disrespected the culture. and as an african-japanese army i really appreciate bts for doing this.

    This full performance of Idol (including the 3J performance) for MMA 2018 is THE MOST AMAZING Idol performance. My mom teared up when she first saw it. She said it made her feel so proud as a Korean. I hope you have a chance to show them that performance. It was rearranged with the use of traditional Korean music instruments live. Along with the lighting and visuals, it was truly a spectacular performance.

    One way to connect to the song: The West was criticizing them for being Asian, colorful, wild, overboard, stereotypical, etc. SK was criticizing them for not being Korean enough, not being Kpop idol enough, not being artists, etc, . This song took all those criticisms and doubled down on everything! That's the genius of it.

    I will say that "Idol" is not everybody's cup of tea, is ok if you don't like it as long as you express it on a respectful way, no problem about it....what catch my attention to "Idol" is not just the awesome coreo but also the lyrics that are deep, don't be fool by the colorful video and all the paraphernalia within it, the lyrics are something else guys.

  • @smartgirlsmartgirl6555

    There is so much symbolism in the Idol Music Video.The video is meant to be wild. People love to try to put BTS in a box. People in general love to stereotype or criticize. BTS are saying; say what you want about us, call me what you want, I don't give a shit. Critics & Haters come in all kinds of packages, Sharks etc. Also; These dance moves are no joke and I'm impressed that you know that these are African influenced dance moves. Alvin Ailey would be proud.

    Here's another live performance, in Japan, that I know you' guys will enjoy reacting to ❤️BTS - DOPE + BAEPSAE + FIRE + IDOL [Medley Stage] Live Performance by a y, from the 2019 BTS SPEAK YOURSELF WORLD TOUR JAPAN. Link in reply. Since its from BTS Speak Yourself Tour, in Japan, they sing most of their songs in Japanese instead of Korean. They also speak Japanese when there as well. BTS performs a breathtakingly spectacular totally LIT over 12 min nonstop medley of some of their most popular, songs: Dope; Baepsae; Fire; & Idol from one of their many sold out concerts in stadiums holding over 80K, this time in Osaka, Japan, during the 2019 BTS Speak Yourself Tour. What made this particular concert that much more special, was that it was held during the day, instead of evening, so you could see everything that much clearer! Their concerts usually go for around 2 1/2 hrs without hardly a break, except when they go dry off, breath some oxygen, change outfits, & come up for air.

    I’m not a huge fan of idol either, but I really like the meaning and the song is kind of catchy. I also understand the mv being a turn off, bc It’s very bizarre. Dkdk tv has a video explaining the song and mv, and it gave me a newfound appreciation for the song. There are a lot of references to Korean culture in both the song and mv, so a lot of things can seem random and go over your head if you’re unfamiliar. I appreciate the honesty from you guys.
