I want to thank you for posting such an excellent tutorial for beginning drummers. I'm 68 and retired and am hoping to gear up to meet the need for a drummer in our worship group. I absolutely love that your focus is on praise and glorifying God rather than merely performance. In fact, every aspect of our daily lives ought to be approached with this in the front of our minds, knowing that our failures remind us of our need of a Savior!

This is so very helpful. I can’t thank you enough. I’ve played this song before in front of my church’s congregation, but I played it super simplistically. I’m a beginner drummer, but I really want to up my game. This is the exact tutorial breakdown I needed to play this song again this Sunday. I’ll be watching this video MANY times over.

Old rusty drummer, God taught, all to His glory. Made my first drum at 14 with a suitcase as a base and buckets as my Tom's, mom and dad bought me a snare and a cymbal kit from Sears, plastic toy foot pedal...lol, God taught me everything how to play by watching other drummers. Played at church, big and little gigs. I'm 61 now, no drums just playing on my knees and feet against the floor. My mom used to laugh as I wouldn't stop pounding at the dinner table. PTL brother keep going, love the worship! Thank you

This is super helpful as our worship team leader decided last night at practice she wanted to do this song. I love the song and have since it came out but she's expecting serious drums outa me and I'm like, uh oh. 😆 I'm going to now do the tutorial step by step so when we get together again to start practicing it, I'll just slam into it and she will be like, huh??? 🤣 I'll let you know how it goes.

I just finished notating Timothy on the drum tutorial. Great drummer. What you are doing is extremely similar. I really like your variation of the tom part in the intro/instrumental. You sound great! Great breakdown. Really like your snare sound!!!

Really great video, thanks! Have you any tips for 'separating' hands from feet? Struggling to keep the 4 on the floor going, while doing the faster right hand stuff on floor tom, without my foot wanting to 'match' my hand, (which feels a bit off time) . Sorry I'm not knowledgeable regards the terminology to describe what I mean fully 😬 Thaks man

My biggest and most boring tip is go super slow...
If you go slow enough, your brain can actually tell your limbs what to do...
Let's take the 3rd groove section of the bridge with the 4 on the floor kick...
This is can be done with massive gaps in-between while learning.
Kick and Floor Tom...
Floor Tom...
Kick...
Floor Tom...
Kick...
Kick with Snare....
I know you can do each of those hits. It gets harder when you go fast. So don't go fast until the pattern is super easy.

That may sound boring but yes, it is great advice, thank you :) My problem is that I'm somewhat proficient at easier songs, so the team think I can do any song on a weeks notice, but they don't realise how complicated it might be to imitate a certain drum beat/ sound, ha, so it's stressful for me. Also, not having a kit of my own is not a help. But cushions and sticks do the trick mostly 😅 Anyway, appreciate the time you took to write back and God bless you in your ministry and your own church context ✊🏻🙂

So how you played it in the beginning is that how the song goes or did you make it easier ?
It's the core pattern of the song without the variations for that part.
I play by ear, so all the counting doesn't always happen. I haven't played for 16yrs and just recently took it back up at church. An advice?

It’s a process that can be quite frustrating but definitely pays off!

Brother your style is clean, straight forward and good! No messiness at all!
I would encourage you to consider (finances permitting) to retire that ride, and get a thicker/smaller ride that complements your style. That one “talks” (or sizzles) too much with resonance beyond the strike, requiring too much control for the desired outcome.
