Pop!_OS is one of the few distros that handles NVIDIA perfectly out of the box, and is great for gaming, as well as being a reliable everyday driver, although the current kernel in the ISO is a little long in the tooth, but that will change soon. Really looking forward to the Rust version of COSMIC to see what it can do, and I’m a big fan of the aesthetic- great vid, thanks 👍
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Pop!_OS! You're spot on about its excellent NVIDIA support and gaming capabilities, not to mention its reliability for daily use. The excitement for the Rust version of COSMIC is definitely shared, and it'll be interesting to see the improvements it brings. The aesthetic of Pop!_OS is indeed a highlight for many. Appreciate the kind words about the video. Stay tuned for more updates and reviews! 👍💻🎮
Been daily driving Pop OS for a few months now and really like how after I got used to the tiling it sped up my workflow, I totally get why so many people love tiling window managers now. Between that and tmux... Anyway I very much appreciate how System 76 has provided a no nonsense distro that plays nice out of the box with nvidia drivers and can't wait for Cosmic to be ready
Pop!_OS has worked well for my master's degree and playing guitar through my laptop. From my couple years of using it I can see that it runs a newer kernel with older Desktop Environments. It's stable but works with newer hardware. I've tried other Distros but always end up back with Pop. I sure hope the Cosmic DE works well.
You're welcome! Diving into a new Linux distribution is always an exciting journey. Hope you find it suits your needs and you enjoy the experience. Happy exploring!
I think what sets Pop! OS apart from Ubuntu and many other desktop focused distributions is its window manager. It's a very nice compromise between tiling capabilities and the traditional floating style. Tiling WM are great when you're working a lot in a terminal or have a static screen layout for a working context. Then you can change focus the window you need with a fast key combination, which is much more efficient than to click around. On the other hand, many applications don't do well in a tiling context and switching between floating windows with alt/super-tab is just more natural. Pop OS's WM makes switching back and forth between tiling and floating mode flawless and intuitive. You can easily define which apps should tile or float. There are many minor issues with the Gnome Cosmic WM, it's not perfect. But compared to pure tiling WM (which are just not my thing) and plain Gnome or KDE, this is just the best compromise I know. I'm looking forward to Cosmic/Rust to see how that will turn out. I dislike the concept of OS "flavors" and find it stupid to select a distribution because of the Desktop they offer. This unnecessarily splits resources that could work on making Linux better instead of creating one flavor after the other all of which are incomplete and often lacking. Pop OS is an exception, because it preserves what was good about Ubuntu and cuts a lot of the corporate bullshit that made me abandon Ubuntu. Before switching to Pop, I was looking at various Arch distros. I am a bit reluctant to switch because I'm familiar with Debian. Then I discovered Distrobox, which makes it super easy to install applications in an Arch container that integrate flawlessly into the host, both for graphical and terminal apps. I'm very happy with my current setup which is a minimal Pop Desktop/Host and various Arch distroboxes. Really feels like the best of many worlds I otherwise had to choose from. So far I really like Pop OS in that role.
@@michaelutech4786 Sorry I have my sons helping me respond to stuff because it getting hard to keep up. I'm not sure what he used. Let me read and give you a proper reply.
I still haven't dived too deep into any of the tiling window managers. I know how to use them but I need to force myself to use one. Definitely install virtualbox and check out different vm. I start using nothing but ubuntu but tried Arch in a VM. If want to try arch I recommend going through the install multiple times in a vm until you get the hang of it. If you want to try a Arch based distro, I recommend EndeavourOS. I has this installed on my secondary laptop. You have plenty of options based on your preference.
@@KeepItTechie Don't worry bro, I'm not miffed, it just really sounded a lot like an AI. No need to answer my post, just thought that the installer is not the most distinctive thing pop-os provides, so I added my 2c.
It was just released in April 2022, so 23 months ago. Old? Really? Are you okay, dude? It's not too old yet compared to some OS out there, like Windows 10, which was released in 2015, or some other OS, and some people are still using it. So Pop!_OS 22.04's not too old yet unless it's still supported.
I need to give Pop a try sometime. I'm currently using Debian 12 on my laptop but I'm getting the itch to try something else, so maybe this will be it.
Giving Pop!_OS a try sounds like a great idea, especially if you're looking for a change from Debian 12. It's known for its user-friendly approach, excellent hardware support, and sleek design. You might find its features and performance refreshing. Enjoy exploring Pop!_OS, and who knows, it could be a perfect fit for your needs!
Its insane you dont work with linux for a living your one of the top linux guys on here. Id like to see you take the RHCSA exam cold turkey and then go live talking about it. i think youd pass
Thank you for the huge compliment! Taking the RHCSA exam cold turkey would indeed be an interesting challenge, and discussing the experience live could provide valuable insights for others interested in Linux certifications. Your confidence and support mean a lot. Who knows, maybe that's an adventure for the future!
Very good video. I am new to Linux. Looking to bale on Windows for personal use. I use a Mac for work, and I'm not a fan of the whole i-ecosystem. I am a full stack developer, so lots of code heavy tasks. I've found that outside of Mac, Linux is just a much smoother experience for many dev tasks, especially when working with compiled languages and server side tasks. The dev experience on Windows is atrocious, even when using the Linux subsystem. Plus the entire Windows OS is just degrading overall. Forced updates. Forced downtime. Inability to change settings, and this is even with the professional version. I'm over it. After this video, I think that pop os will be a good fit. Familiar enough, but hopefully without the hangups of Windows.
I"m hoping next month ( April 24) they come out with the NEW one.. I LOVE THE TILING-- the rest I don't care about. I wish ALL distros had tht tiling... none of this stupid keyboard BS... just good AUTO- tiling. All those workspaces slideing around in gnome is goofy.. just a confusing mess.. Tiling is SO much better.
Pop OS was my first linux distro and it sucks tbh. Installing nvidia drivers was similar to experiencing hell. Will not recommend it to anyone who has a GTX nvidia graphics card.
just install windows like a normal human being and stop wasting time on this trash. you will waste away your life fixing bugs. why make things harder for yourself.. get windows, play games with ease and be productive.
Damn it must be fun judging lol no one told you to use it or pay attention to linux. With that have u even tried using Linux because from what I'm reading doesn't sound like it lmao! Fixing bugs I daily drive Linux the last 5 years I can tell u this much I don't fix bugs or waste my time lol I play games no problem and able to do stuff for work without tinkering around or fixing bugs lmao. With that for any new user consider what you need first software if stuff you need is strictly on Windows and u don't feel like learning alternatives or testing them out then simple stay on windows.if you are more adventurous and willing to learn alternatives then give Linux a try but don't go in thinking it's anything like Windows because it's NOT.

Popos 22.04 is a really old release, you should've waited for COSMIC to come out and then review it

Pop os is also the only distribution to include packages in its depositories that don't work at all.

Thanks for the video. Clear and to the point. Keep em coming.
is it 100 free? and does it has Gapps?
Gapps? That's on android
And yes Pop! OS is free, backed by System76
There is not Linux that only purpose for finance?

Pop Os provide seperate image for Nvidia cards doesn't it?
blame nvidia for that. i have an rtx 4070 support is not ideal but it is decent
