- Meet a young boy from the Eastern Cape's rural areas who was awarded the Cum Laude award and who grew up from nothing. Struggling family with no money for school shoes and no food at home. Mom, being a kitchen lady, provided us with food. My journey has not been easy; I recall cooking Umphokoqo and going to the nearest shop where the owner would give us Amasi and we would eat as a family. I will be eternally grateful to that family.
There is a lot, starting in 2014 when I was in Grade 11 and had to move from home to the town where the school is located and had to rent, and in 2015 when I was in Grade 12 and selling sweets in school for survival, and here I am today.
Imagine receiving R350 from home, having to pay R150 in rent, a R80 electricty bill, and only R120 for groceries each month. I'd live off of it, buying sweets to sell and using the profits to buy clothes, food, and toiletries. Accepting my current living situation is what has brought me here today. I had to put in a lot of effort to change my living situation.
With this video, I am proud and confident to say if "I did it, you can do it".
