This is my favorite version of Gloomy Sunday! I've been looking for this version everywhere. I had it burnt on a CD but I couldn't remember for the life of me who sang the version I had. This is amazing. His voice and guitar are haunting.
Absolutely!!! I would find it hard to pick a favourite Elvis Costello album though as 'This Years Model', 'Get Happy', 'Punch The Clock' and 'Armed Forces' (amongst others) are all classics too.
slowparker, Absolutely hilarious comment! I wish I'd said that. Seriously though, for such a seemingly simple song it sure does carry a lot of punch, eh? The original is really excellent!

Great cover! This is a Hungarian song originally, by Seres Rezső.
I have 27 versions of this song, but Elvis Costello's (studio) version is actually my favourite! Maybe alongside Sarah McLachlan's. Check out Heather Nova and Billie Holiday as well - great renditions!
This is a great version of Gloomy Sunday. Though, I think the best version is the one done by Venetian Snares which uses the Hungarian title of Öngyilkos Vasárnap. Very much worth listening to, along with the rest of the album it is from (Rossz Csillag Alatt Született).
Im really glad I learned to play this song prior to memorizing elvis or billie's tone.. although theyre both awesome performances, theres a way to sing the song a lot bluesier.. I find the dreaming part fucked up too lol.. the guitaring sounds gross in some parts though..just like in this version.. but I guess hella tight, still lol
I personally feel Björk did the best even though she too put on that pathetic ending. I find Billie's voice a bit irritating to be honest. Just the timbre of it is kinda squaky or something dunno. and I wish this version had better audio clarity.
He should have left the gay ass "oh my lord twas only a dream!!! For joy!"-part out. There's a sad tale behind this poem/song, and sweetening it up hollywood-style doesn't serve it justice.
This is the first time i've ever sat down and listend to an elvis song and now i have alot more respect for this artist
Breathtaking, amazing performance!!! And what a voice!!! Thank you so much, Lpstd1!

This song always reminds me of "Schindler's List".
The original lyrics were about war and the end of the world.
Thanks, I'll check Galas' version. My Hungarian isn't what it used to be.
dobre
What lyrics were changed? I wanna do a version of this song
Check out the original version in hungarian! Google for "szomorú vasárnap"!

the best version is the original, the hungarian one! original title: szomorú vasárnap
No, no no...check out Marianna with her New Modern Criminals version...crazy cool
Amazing version but for me, the Associates (Billy Mackenzie)
version is still the best.
The song must be sing in magyarul.
If you want the true ... feling
Amazing Elvis..This song induced suicides
considering what the lyrics actually portray and say, i dont think this rendition serves the song justice..

the song would be a silly urban legend, except.... it's so powerful, eerie, seductive. Not to be listened to on a Sunday.
i just wanna copy and pest copy and pes copy and pest 🌚👊🌚👊 #iraq_been_here العراق مر من هنا 🌚✌ءء ..
This song was banned by the Pope.
Marianna does a much better version.....Marianna - Gloomy Sunday..
ah yeah

socdk he was probably doing it for an artistic reason
Costello is not one to sweeten things up Hollywood style
Seeming he usually goes against that
