Samurai Jack took a ton from Ronin. Down to the demon horn shapes being identical to Aku’s horns. It’s crazy!

Love it guys! When Tom and Ed mention Millers Loft, oddly enough, if anyones ever seen the movie "After Hours" by Scorsese, where you see the artists loft where she's making Papier Mache sculptures? I ALWAYS thought that's what Millers studio would have looked like back in the 80s where it's literally one gigantic attic that's got wall dividers set up. Probably would absolutely suck to heat that sucker up, but I can imagine how much room he'd have to work. Probably wouldn't have cost him much either seeing as it's Manhattan when it was still the Rotten Apple.
Also, because I'm from the UK, Ronin reminded me less of Moebius and more of Carlos Ezquerra in terms of inking and penmanship. This was YEARS before I knew what the hell Lone Wolf & Cub or Heavy Metal Magazine was so my mind thought that Miller was a fan of Ezquerra rather than Moebius.

Fantastic interview. "Ronin" came out when I was in high school. I got the series upon release. It was ahead of its time. The care and quality DC put into that series was unmatched then and now.

I'd also suggest Druillet was probably an influence on this, especially with some of those splash pages.

9:00 Moebius 12:00 Kojima 36:25 Breccia and Muñoz
You can say that Miller was very open-minded and that he looked at artists from all over the planet at a time when in the USA it did not happen

I need to reread this. And...I like this better in black and white now.

Ed's trying to remember Franklin Booth when he's talking about Wrightson's inkwork, but Gustave Dore was a relevant call out. There's a plate in Dore's Rime of the Ancient Mariner of a guy suspended against the mast of a ship that is absolutely the source of a Frankenstein illustration that Wrightson draws, with the figure at a slightly different angle.

Well, that maybe changed my life just now...Holy cow. Despite having most of his other books and being around 20 years, I've somehow never seen Ronin. Seeing it in this format along with your commentary about the influences and his experimentation and stuff. Absolutely incredible. I need this book. Thank you, guys. Back to the drawing board with a vengeance!!!!

    bird's-eye view of Frank's loft:
maybe 10 years ago i stopped up to see my bud at his editing job in the west '30s, not far from the port authority.
he called me over to the window.. "dude, check it out. that's Frank's loft".
stunned, i stared down one floor across the street onto a huge group of large windows. not high-rise height, but not street-level.
    there.. the Grail.
reasonably sparse throughout. many bookshelves in one room, and, seemingly, a large space dedicated solely to a massive architect's table (or so it seemed, based on it's angled surface) with much space around it.
    a creative grotto, for sure.

I love Ronin but will probably never be able to justify buying the gallery edition, so I'm really pleased to see you've uploaded this vid! Many thanks for all your hard work on the channel.

I only know about this book from you guys, so seeing this in its black and white form, and seeing how strong it stands, it would be amazing to see it reprinted without color (unless this does exist somewhere).

Good morning! Thanks for a great video, guys! Definitely I’d rather have these big art books wart n all! Ronin opened the door for Dark Knight in helluva ways! I really like what Miller was trying to do and push himself! I started following him in ‘79 ,Ronin was to me lots of fun and who cares what the doughy criticism of fanboys blather? I worked in comic shop back then and enjoyed this era because things were opening up... indies! Thanks ,guys I appreciate your honesty and enthusiasm in all you do! Read& Make More Comix!!
