I don't think much is going to come out of it. Notch could hire a skilled studio, but he seems to be the kind that prefers developing games in an indie studio setting. And all his other games have been unremarkable. He could do a Minecraft 2.0, but I don't think he will. A whole other question is whether it will even go anywhere near Minecraft's success.

The only way I see Minecraft 2 happening without being an inferior version to the original is if something core and fundamental to the simplest version of Minecraft is changed not for the better but for the difference and destinction. The only example I can come up with right now is smaller cubes (1/8 blocks or 1/27 blocks). Or using other shapes that fill without any gaps like triangles or hexagons. Hexagons would actually be really sick.

I'm not sure how much of this is true, but a lot of what I've heard over the years about Minecraft is that Notch built a cool, albeit poorly optimized and very simplistic, digital Lego simulator. It wasn't until Jeb and the team at Mojang started working on optimization and updates that it became the beloved game most know. I'm not inclined to believe that wholeheartedly, just because there's a lot of people who would want to discredit Notch out of jealousy or w/e, but certainly his cringey attitude and constant need for validation online makes me think there's some truth to it. Plus Beta MC used to need a super computer to barely run if you wanted to build anything over 9x9 blocks, so the rough optimization in the early days is certainly true.
He has IDGAF money he can make his own studio and have people optimise his code again, or just be the director of the game and let others code it. People forget he is super rich now and can afford people to help him make the game.

Honestly, that's pretty common for single-person indie projects to be poorly optimized since the developer is a game developer first, software expert second. It's why Undertale, despite being one of the most beloved indie games ever, is absolutely riddled with bugs and glitches that were never patched because only two people worked on it. An artist, and the developer himself.

Right now people just need to hook into the internals of the game, and if anything changes there, mods will break. This is why mods always had to be updated after a new release.
@@rizizum datapacks are limited though, and afaik minecraft doesnt offer an easy way to do programming. You have to rely on components and minecraft commands. This makes certain things either very tedious to do or simply impossible. The way they are approaching this makes it inviable for datapacks to ever (potentially) be the modding API people expect. BUT, that doesnt mean ALL mods will never be able to be replaced by datapacks. Certain types of mods (depending on what they do) CAN be turned into datapacks, and things will change in the future as well

Imo not being able to simulate conversations would be more of an issue when i look at my personal experiences, but i'm also autistic and simulate 80% of conversations i'm about to have. I'm sorry, but as much as we have Notch to thank for for creating Minecraft, the game had so much time to develop and envelop the market (not to mention already existing competitors like Terraria) that Notch is like 10 years too late to even consider releasing anything that can match even 1/10 of the success Minecraft had.

Btw Minecraft 2 already exists. On April 1 2013 Mojang released a joke announcement about making Minecraft 2. After that copies of Minecraft 2 were sent to select celebrity individuals to showcase to the public as part of the joke. It didn't add much. It was just version 1.5.1 with a few new blocks. Hexagons tile the plane. You need to tile 3d space, cant do that with hexagons.

I'm not sure how much of this is true, but a lot of what I've heard over the years about Minecraft is that Notch built a cool, albeit poorly optimized and very simplistic, digital Lego simulator. It wasn't until Jeb and the team at Mojang started working on optimization and updates that it became the beloved game most know.
I'm not inclined to believe that wholeheartedly, just because there's a lot of people who would want to discredit Notch out of jealousy or w/e, but certainly his cringey attitude and constant need for validation online makes me think there's some truth to it.
Plus Beta MC used to need a super computer to barely run if you wanted to build anything over 9x9 blocks, so the rough optimization in the early days is certainly true.
He has IDGAF money he can make his own studio and have people optimise his code again, or just be the director of the game and let others code it. People forget he is super rich now and can afford people to help him make the game.

Honestly, that's pretty common for single-person indie projects to be poorly optimized since the developer is a game developer first, software expert second. It's why Undertale, despite being one of the most beloved indie games ever, is absolutely riddled with bugs and glitches that were never patched because only two people worked on it. An artist, and the developer himself.

Right now people just need to hook into the internals of the game, and if anything changes there, mods will break. This is why mods always had to be updated after a new release.

@@rizizum datapacks are limited though, and afaik minecraft doesnt offer an easy way to do programming. You have to rely on components and minecraft commands. This makes certain things either very tedious to do or simply impossible.
The way they are approaching this makes it inviable for datapacks to ever (potentially) be the modding API people expect.
BUT, that doesnt mean ALL mods will never be able to be replaced by datapacks. Certain types of mods (depending on what they do) CAN be turned into datapacks, and things will change in the future as well

Btw Minecraft 2 already exists. On April 1 2013 Mojang released a joke announcement about making Minecraft 2. After that copies of Minecraft 2 were sent to select celebrity individuals to showcase to the public as part of the joke. It didn't add much. It was just version 1.5.1 with a few new blocks.
An Etho slab (Reference to EthosLab) - a TNT slab that spawned anvils over mobs and players in the explosion zone. It was crafted with 3 TNT.
The torches would burn out after some time and had to be re-lit with a flint and steel.
Block of coal (It didn't exist in the normal game yet. It also looked like a black redstone block) - after you uncrafted it the coal wouldn't stack with the normal coal.
Tinted glass (It was a full block crafted with 8 glass blocks surrounding a dye) - It was opaque.

They follow a player holding an apple or sugar, but they breed like normal horses.

"Super Hostile Mode" is an occasional event (every 2-5 minutes on Purple version).

Options

Starting from 2 April 2013, 00:00, regardless of time zone, the only splash "APRIL FOOLS!" in light purple letters and has a random size, but larger than normal.
Tinted glass uses filters.
Lightning can strike mobs through blocks.
The easier the difficulty, the more challenging super hostile mode is.
However, if the player changes the difficulty to Peaceful, the super hostile mode is disabled. This is due to Peaceful difficulty despawning hostile mobs and not allowing them to spawn.
The textures for tinted glass, diamond chickens, and Redstone Bugs are all coded into the game, and are not found with the other mobs in the texture pack folders.
The changelog contained a lot of untrue information. Here are some notable examples:
It said "Fixed a bug where skeletons would miss their targets on occasion".
It said that there were many things added to fishing, including new fish. It proceeded to note that fishing had been removed and if the player had fish in their inventory they would be damaged to discourage fishing.
