  • You requested it, so here it is! I talk Duncan through a single player game and explain my deepest darkest strategies and tactics to win at Civ 5. In this episode we cover the first few crucial turns establishing our new Civ! This series was originally intended to be more organized into sensible parts, but it was too complicated so we decided to just randomly ramble instead! Here's a link to the reddit thread to chat about this episode: / civ5_strategy_guide_1_...

      If you are playing with decent players then that is a recipe for disaster. Sure "if" you are isolated "and if" you have solid food "and" production then go for it. Otherwise it is generally a bad idea (the first point is most important).
      Your neighbour will be saying:
      1) Thanks for the free settlements
      2) If you have rather open/flat lands they will be saying "thank you for the wonder"

    • @MrJoeyWheeler
      @MrJoeyWheeler 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raitsa I don't see a point in settling much at all - it reduces the amount of policies I'll get over time, it costs me a LOT of happiness when I almost always am strapped for it, and the time training them could be better spent growing and producing.

      Damian Freeman It really depends on what you're going for; you can't really get a domination victory going that route, as well as the AI will be ahead of you if playing on Emperor or something. Of course, you are playing against friends, and you're probably safe from early attack since they usually wouldn't want someone knocked out early-game.

    • @MrJoeyWheeler
      @MrJoeyWheeler 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      john smith If I go into unhappiness then my entire empire has problems I can't recover from. I never allow myself to go into unhappiness.
      I never go for domination victories, it's really not my style. I'm more of a science type person, defending myself. At the most I'd try capturing a neighbour who I think I can challenge.
      No, I'm not safe from early attacks with friends. We all unleash our evil sides.

I don't think it could happen as often though because they both outclass everyone in the Yogscast by a mile. Perhaps if it was a Duncan, Lewis, Filthy, and Quill multiplayer with teams (Lewis & Quill, Duncan & Filthy) then it might work out a bit better, but that'd be a bit boring and doesn't really suit the style of the crew.

    9:24 I would say Lewis puts too much baggage on vulnerability to sea attacks. They're not as powerful as they seem. The easiest way to defend from them is just to get a couple of boats out. Plus, if you're settling on that tile with only one sea tile next to it, that's really good, because that's only one place where boats can melee your city. I'd say the sea trade routes you get out of a city like that far outweigh the threat of any attack. Also, that city will be subject to the nice bonus three production from that one exploration policy.

    Starting on a coast with sea resources can be a boon. A lot of people complain about the high cost of building and protecting work boats. But the truth is: the cost is intended to balance the huge gain. The reason these tiles are so important is that you can improve their yeild very early in the game. A coast tile with fish starts with a yield of +2 food. You get +1 more food with a fishing boat, and +2 more food and +1 production with a light house. Add Godess of the Sea, and you tile will have a total yeild of +5 food and +2 production.
    By comparison, you need much later tech (irrigation) to improve the yeild of farm tiles next to a river.
    Lewis is pretty bad at choosing pantheons. In Season 9, every one of Lewis's cities (including his capitol) were surrounded by sea resources and he chose God King. There is almost no situation in which chosing God King is a good idea. If there is no obvious pantheon, choose Fertility Rites for the extra population. Remember, you get +1 science for each population (+1.5 if you have a library). Therefore, population = science. And as a corollary, food = science.
    One more thought. Lewis says that when choosing a pantheon you should focus on faith. While this may make sense in multiplayer, I would avoid this in Diety. There is almost no way to found and effectively spead a religion at higher difficulty levels. Instead, you should focus on improving food, culture, or production.

    1) Shrines are circumstantial depending on your nearby resources. It's spending early hammers and early hammers really make or break how fast you can get your empire up and rolling.
    2) 4 cities to NC. Not necessarily. Once again, circumstances. It depends on your nearby resources (especially luxuries), and your happiness from population. Sometimes one city NC or 2 city or 3 city is much more optimal.
    3) General rule, on quick MP play. You want to get NC up by turn 60-80 if you don't have aggressive forward settles or and major reasons for war. Science should be around 125-200 by turn 100 to stay competitive in online competitive MP games.
    4) "You should never go liberty under any circumstances". You'll be surprised how good liberty is under certain circumstances. Or how important it is to get you out of early horrible starts. If you start in flatland tundra/desert area, with no hills/production/strategic resources, liberty is needed for that early +1 production and buildings bonus. Those lands call for liberty, and tradition would actually be worse off in those situations.
    You liberty to go domination before industrial/renaissance era, meaning to say you must take advantage of the early hammers to conquer other civs and build an empire to stay relevant against "tall" tradition players. Or just crush everyone before tradition starts becoming way better than liberty in the later eras.
    Certain civilisations are amazing for liberty, especially those with early faith/science buildings like Ethiopia/China/Maya. Or generally a faith liberty strategy with city spam for religion and happiness into Jesuit Education strategy.

      Mr. Worldwide if you get a good enough start and your just playing casually or your friends are as bad as you but don't commit to it then you can get it almost every time. but you are only on about two cities by turn 30-40 so you have two powerhouses and 2-4 mediocre cities(this makes it really good for Venice because you can't have more than one city in reality)

    Give this a try: Open Tradition (+3 culture in your capitol) next open and play Liberty (+1 culture in every city). With a monument in your capitol that is +7 culture per turn. choose God-King for your pantheon that bumps it up to +8 culture per turn.

  • @GPantazis

    Why would you like to be on a hill? Sure, the +1 hammer might seem like a lot, but getting 15% extra production from the Windmill is a LOT.

    • @haldim1
      @haldim1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Giannis Pantazis there are pros and cons. for example the hill gives the city a better def. stats, and god know that is needed when you play online. One is not strictly better then the other.

    • @grantbrugger4338
      @grantbrugger4338 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would usually start with 5 production but adding that extra 1 hammer gives you a bonus 20 percent production right off the bat which helps you build starter things quicker than opponents; however, if it is between a river and a hill, a river would definitely be much better as it allows for that 15 percent increase on all production. So it really is a matter of opinion, rush early game, or the long run?

    I have around 900 hours. I would like to propose an alternative strategy to "build small then get all the national wonders" that works decently (against humans with 600+ hours) with every civ (except Venice) but superbly with the Celts/Egypt/Ethiopia/Inca/Maya (because of faith/happiness/expansion synergies).
    Start by building a monument and researching pottery. Build a shrine as soon as the monument is finished. Split the difference on policies and unlock Tradition, because the bonus for unlocking is the best part of Tradition, and then use your 6 culture to go up Liberty and spam settlers.
    If you are playing a civ with no religious bonuses, this gets you to the free Great Person around the time your first Great Prophet spawns, allowing you to almost instantly enhance your religion and ensuring your beliefs actually synergize decently. Getting the extra faith early also makes it much more likely that you can choose the best beliefs to cover the happiness and culture problems caused by so much early expansion.
    If you build your cities densely, you can ensure that anybody between your cities can always be attacked by a city (great for dealing with early barbarians if you don't want to spend time, production, and gold on extra military in the first 30 turns). This also means that cities only have to reach size 3 to justify connecting to your road network, enabling much faster expansion early and into the mid-game while also making it easier to defend your civ with a reasonable number of units. Building cities close together also means that your religion exerts incredible pressure on your neighbors and makes it difficult to dislodge, even if you don't go up Piety to get Unity of the Prophets.
    The obvious negative is that there is a science penalty that is not offset by your awesome religion. This negative is not as bad as it appears, though, because the penalty is cumulative (10 cities = 150% cost) instead of exponential. In other words, you can continue to build cities without taking significantly longer to do research if your new cities quickly reach 5% of your capital's research. Whatever penalty remains should be completely overshadowed by the additional production that you have from having so many cities, the ease of traversing long map distances, and the virtual guarantee that you will have an abundance of the necessary strategic resources for the late-game.

    Always ask these questions when founding a city:
    1. Am I getting enough luxuries to make up for settling this city? (Usually one luxury that's UNIQUE to your civ is okay)
    2. Is there enough fish, cattle, deer, or wheat to make this city big enough to be worth it? (Fish is the biggest one, with five food and one production)
    3. Would it be coastal? (Just for water-based trade routes, and obviously a requirement for fish)
    4. Would it be on a river? (Most notably for the garden and watermill)
    5. Can it be adjacent to a mountain? (For the observatory, which is great, but don't make this a priority over, say, fish)

    I once wonder spammed in a game with my friend taking the great library and discovering philosophy with the free tech to start on national college. I got attacked soon after but I sent them packing when they sent a troop of warriors after declaring peace by pushing them back using the money i saved. xD
    I also sometimes choose Liberty because:
    1- The Free Worker
    This is important because I can build things like the monument, shrine, granary, watermill, etc. meaning when my workers start building, they already have a boost. It also speeds up the production of workers by 33% in the capital.
    2- The Production Boost (before you can access free settler)
    This helps me rush a few things essential to victories like the national college and oxford university. It also means I can focus on more things related to growth and gold which might save you in mid game as you can force enemy units back that haven't declared war on you yet, delaying them for your soldiers to come quicker.
    3- The Free Settler
    This can be useful but I don't really go for it. Sometimes I go for it if my city is growing really slowly so I can take some good rescources nearby with less worry. There's also the speed boost of 50% for settlers in the capital which could be useful when trying to get your four cities out quickly.
    4- The Golden Age
    This boosts the gold I can get and happiness meaning my cities grow quickly and I have some gold to use.

    In my experience (almost 500 hours logged into Civ 5) going Liberty while rushing the Great Library (Normal Library if you know you cannot get the wonder) into National College is the best course of action. The start Lewis had would have been perfect for that start, especially the wonder option. He had enough production to get the wonder, and you use your culture to get the worker and first settler. Basically, here is how I go from start till National College finish.
    Science: Pottery -> Writing -> Calendar -> Mining -> Masonry -> (Free Tech from Great Library) Philosophy -> at this point continue as you go normally, your science will be so heavy that you can do anything, even if you do not get the Great Library.
    Production: Settle City -> Monument -> scout -> Granary -> shrine -> Great Library -> National College -> at this point you can continue to be a "wonder whore" by building the wonders you can, or you can continue with normal buildings, settlers, units, etc. Depends on your play style.
    Culture: Liberty -> Citizenship (free worker) -> Republic -> Collective Rule (Free Settler) *DON'T SETTLE UNTIL YOU HAVE BUILT THE NATIONAL COLLEGE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY* -> Representation (Free golden age) -> Meritocracy (get a great engineer with the free choice of a great person, use him to quick build a wonder of your choice [Petra is a nice one if you have a healthy desert city]) -> if you do not have Rationalism unlocked by then (99% of the time you won't) go either down the Tradition tree or Patronage tree, but switch to Rationalism as quickly as possible. It's fine to not finish tradition or patronage, but it is essential you get Rationalism done before you can choose an Ideology.

    • @SRaitsa
      @SRaitsa 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were to rush any wonder as Liberty then I would desire Temple of Artemis more than Great Library. It helps to compensate for Liberty's biggest weakness.
      The science that you get from Great Library going down the route you mentioned will normalise during the Medieval Era and start to vanish come the Industrial Era.
      I am not seeing much in the way of settling in this build order. How many cities are you looking to achieve normally and by around what turn (speed would be helpful)?

    • @FreddyB41
      @FreddyB41 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the setting of your map, really. Ideally, you want to have about 4 cities by the Renaissance era, more if you have a great, resource rich, landscape. Temple of Artemis doesn't really help, and can actually cause happiness problems due to growing too quickly. The science won't normalize IF you get other science wonders and rush science-enhancing techs and buildings. Getting the porcelain tower in essential, and the amount of great scientists will also help you out immensely, but not every game is the same, and your mid to late game strats and builds will become more varied by how many players there are, how close they are to you, and whether they are passive or aggressive.

    In early game, I expand. First I Build a worker and work on farms. Then I build a settler, and expand. With the capital, I build another warrior. For the second i build a builder. I do farms. Expand. Farms. Expand. And then i mass produce troops. I stay peaceful yet cautious. Even if I have double the army power needed, I stay peaceful. I try to become more powerful than my target. Then I also try to out number them. By target I mean the world. Attack smartly too

    Tradition is best for food starts. But if you have a bad spawn or a lot of luxuries, Liberty is better. Basically if you're only going to have 4 cities, go tradition. But if you can get around 7+ (by settling and/or conquering) Liberty is usually the better choice. Combine it with Religion for happiness and piety for a reformation that allows you to buy science buildings with faith, and it becomes great

  • @chuckwagon9973
    @chuckwagon9973 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like to open Tradition to get the culture, then go full liberty because it gives you 1 culture and extra production. I also like being able to pick a great person early on in the game!

    • @SRaitsa
      @SRaitsa 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This "can" be okay but often this negates/hinders what Liberty is all about. While taking the Tradition opener will get you earlier culture on your capital (giving quicker tile expansion) what it will also mean is that you will get those other policies later.
      Liberty is all about getting a sprawling empire up as soon as possible and getting those buildings and units up before growth has much of a chance to have an impact.

    I have to disagree with the Liberty thing. I think it is best to go Liberty because even if you are building a settler, the policy would take roughly 35 turns so that would mean...
    4 turns to make a monument,}
    4 turns to make a shrine,}
    15 turns to make a settler} 23 turns.
    12 turns later, you have a free settler.
    So taking the early game 4 city strategy means you MUST take Liberty, unless you want to spend 38 turns building; monument, shrine, settler, settler.
    Anyway, that's my opinion!
