      That would have been halfway through the tournament. The decision was just about his fitness. It was a bitter disappointment that he wasn't fit.” Gascoigne's fitness was a concern in the months leading up to the World Cup, but it was a friendly against Morocco that convinced Hoddle to leave him out of the squad.

    He had a great first half, waned a bit in the second- though England were more on the backfoot in that half. In the first half he was the best player on the field, he looked a cut above anyone else. His short and medium range passing was very good. He also reacted in a more mature way when fouled than he had in the past, though he was still prone to being a bit dangerous with some of his own tackling.

      I think he lacked match fitness at this stage of his career after 45 mins he was running on empty. His passing and touches could become very sloppy. Possibly one of the reasons hoddle didn't pick him for the world Cup. Because you only rely on him for one half a football after that he could become a liability. Bad touches and passing getting frustrated and getting himself sent off. I think that's what hoddle was afraid off.

    Nobody properly nurtured his talent or helped him cope with the fame…. Love Gazza and hate how the media destroyed his life…i.e. hacking his phone and making him think everyone close to him was lying to him….haven’t bought a newspaper since! He should have been revered like Maradona, pele or platini… and the only Englishman I’ve ever seen that when receiving the ball the opposition took a step back in fear.

    I love Gazza. Best player of all time in my opinion. Yes, even better than Messi. Just never realised his potential. I know Messi is excellent, of course, but I don't feel the same buzz of excitement that you get when the ball comes to Gazza. I agree with Maradona, Messi has a flat personality, and somehow despite his brilliance, that comes through on the pitch. You cannot accuse Gazza of having a flat personality.

      @@lodersracing No, it's because the press released pictures just before selection of him having a night out and he'd dropped out of top flight football to play for Boro. He still played reasonably well the next season in the Prem after their promotion. He wasn't peak 96-97 Gazza, but rather than support him he was cut loose. Hoddle also wasted Le Tissier when he was still playing solid football after the press had a go at his tracking back and lack of pace.
      A decade later they'd have it in for Joe Cole for "losing possession" before a goal - continuing a pattern of the Press never letting us have creative midfielders and wasting unique talents dating back decades.

    Wild reckless lunges, that were attempted tackles, that could have seen red. Misplaced, attempted creative passes. Acceleration gone & can't drift past players. Dwelling on the ball to long. Safe to say. This version of Gascoigne was past it's sell by date. Can see why Hoddle didn't take him to the '98 world cup.

    • @sundijohnson2486
      @sundijohnson2486 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Disagree, he was the best player first half. Willing to try through passes, dribbles and runs. His creativity wasn't as effective as first half but still classy. He wasn't the player he was in 1990 but still a fine player.
      Biddle should have definitely included him in WC '98 squad.

    • @michaelwynn8019

      You need some context. This was one of the most nerve-wracking England games I've seen. They needed a point to qualify against a bloody good Italian side, far better than the team that won the Euros. He forced an England side that found possession difficult to keep the ball. He received possession in incredibly difficult areas, pirouetted, kept it away from them. One thing you don't see there is that Paul Ince, his partner in midfield, was off the pitch for at least 15 minutes in that first half and Gascoigne took the sting out of it and controlled the tempo. Agree about his tackling, he never learnt and also that he was 6/7 years past his peak. He's nowhere near 90/91 Gascoigne at this point. Just shows how talented he was that he was still able to do this at this point in his career with all his issues.

    • @danyoutube7491
      @danyoutube7491 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only reason that Hoddle didn't take him was that in early 1998 he had let himself go- the Gazza in THIS game did a very good job, and if he'd kept himself in this shape he would have been taken to France '98. He certainly wasn't reckless with possession in this game, he keeps it far more than most players, and not simply by passing it around the back as they do these days. I'm watching this again and at just over 3 minutes in, one of his passes is intercepted for the first time...Pacino needs glasses.
