For does who didnt know the meaning of this song read this. Heap has been reluctant to say exactly what inspired this song, but most of what she's said indicates that she wrote this song about the separation of her parents when she was 12 and her father finding a new wife. "Crop circles in the carpet" means the furniture has been moved out and all that is left are crop circle imprints. "Oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before" means photos have been taken down. All signs that someone is moving out of the home. Heap has called the images "a collection of childhood memories." >> This is an a cappella song that Heap came up with after her computer died on her. With no computer to work on, she decided to try a piece of equipment she hadn't yet used to work on a song: a harmonizer. She used the processing device hooked up to her keyboard to come up with a melody, which happened very quickly around 2 a.m. She recorded a rough demo, which she faithfully recreated in the studio. In 2005, this was used in a climactic scene from the season 2 finale ("The Dearly Beloved") of The O.C. when the character Marissa shoots Trey, who is trying to kill Ryan. In 2007, the song was used in a Saturday Night Live digital short with Shia LaBeouf that parodied the scene. In 2009, Jason DeRulo sampled this song for his debut single "Whatcha Say." It topped the UK chart and reached #3 in the UK, earning Heap a nice little sum.

‘That you only meant well?/Well of course you did.’ Just a devastatingly effective song. Those two lines alone are so charged with emotion. Accusation, hurt, and just a little bit of understanding. It’s so raw.
i never realized how powerful the meme part of this song is. like theres passion and anger in the lyrics and the tone and we just never noticed bc of its meme status
This actual song, I never knew outside of the few lyrics that are a meme and included in Jason DeRulos' song. But now, my best friend showed it to me and told me about how much it means to him as a child who experienced a divorce. I don't have any experiences, but nevertheless, his showing me what this song means to him has caused me to perceive this song in a different way.
This song is about a kid's perspective going through a divorce? "Oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before (Family photos)" "Crop circles forming in the carpet (Furniture being moved)
For some reason I thought it was about a person who was murdered and was a ghost in their old house where the murder happened...like a murder suicide where a lover killed her and then took their own life. Now she sees where the old furniture has already been moved out, etc. She's bitter when perhaps she hears someone will move in soon, even though it only just happened. (They were here first...as in her things...she...was here first) I'm probably the only person who thinks that lmao.

You know, looking at it objectively, the hook at 2:55 is musically one of the best parts of this song, but because it got sampled and memed so much, I feel like it's my least favorite part. It's like when you say a word so many times that it doesn't even sound like a word any more; I've heard the hook so many times that it doesn't feel like it belongs in this song
this song would have an amazing remake to this day. the hook would sound very different most likely and the anger in it would probably more expressed. it really is beautiful but.. feels so dumb now
This song is a lot prettier when you know what it's about. Imogen wrote this when her parents got divorced and her family was being torn apart. Most of the imagery describes what an empty house looks like when you're moving out and remembering the fun times you've had and seeing it all dissapear in front of you. Sad, but beautiful.
Thank you. Yes, it is. People are free to interpret it however they wish, but that is exactly what she was writing about. It's a relief when the author actually informs people because it grounds things for those who simply wish to understand what inspired the lyrics.

This is like auto-tune, singing in front of an electric fan, recording an audio from a device through a microphone, and having a cold at the same time. I love it.
This song is about the Holocaust. The bridge is about the general Holocaust. "Hide and seek." Meaning, hiding from the Nazis. "Trains and sewing machines." Meaning, the trains used to transport the people to concentration camps and the sewing machines women were often forced to work with, until they died from malnutrition, starving, or execution. "All those years they were here first." Meaning, that the Jewish religion was there before Hitler. The Chorus is mostly about Hitler. She uses a lot of sarcasm in it. Basically she means that she can't believe that Hitler did this and claimed that it was for the best. The first and third verses are about when the Jewish people first arrived at the camps and their houses had been ransacked. "The dust has only just begun to form crop circles in the carpet." Meaning, the empty houses. "Oily marks appear on walls, where pleasure moments hung before." Meaning, the items gone.
ohmygod you are brilliant in a metaphorical person but I just couldn't get this song I just thought this song was related to war-ish and I'm guess I'm right 🙈
I love the different meanings people have for this song, some say the Holocaust(my personal favorite), abusive families/relationships, and it really shows how good this song is.
Idk where the Holocaust thing came from, Heap themself said its more to do with parents splitting when you're young so people have taken it way out of context to apply basically genocide to it

I'll never stop loving this song. The harmonies gave me ASMR-like stimulation long before I had any idea what ASMR was. Such a beautiful song that has helped me through some really difficult times (and overall is so very underrated). Definitely one of my favorites.
Thing you think at 2:55 *Doctor Who being removed from Netflix *When you die in Slither.io *When your computer freezes at 2:54 *When you read the last Harry Potter book *When Jason Derulo made his crappy remix of this great song
The lyrics in this song can be up for interpretation, because we all have different experiences. Ik the songs lyrics were originally meant to be about a kids perspective having divorced parents. But personally, this song leaves me reminiscing over old memories that made me happy before. I reminisce about being with my family, who at times it feels like they hate me. But this song always brings me back to before all the mistakes and arguments and confusion.
I was only made aware of this beautiful song BECAUSE of the Dear Sister skit. So, when you think about it like that, it's good that it was used in such a way.
The lyrics at the part "Trains and Sewing Machines" is wrong, its "Trains and Soaring Machines", referring to airplanes. Acts of terrorism. That's why its called hide and seek, and the part "They were here first.". 9-11, and a terrorist act around her childhood where multiple tear gas bombs blew up a train, killing nearly all. "oily marks", from the bombs. The singer cleared this up for people before, although i have no idea when.
I was born in 2001, and I grew up in the wild west of TH-cam and later formative years of the internet in general. For so long this song has been a meaningless meme, but now: It's a masterpiece. This song deserves more recognition as one of the greats...big only it didn't get sampled

She is using a piano to make her pitch higher. That's why it sounds robotic. She uses a piano
Haven't heard this song in over 10 years I have nostalgic goosebumps and tears running down my face. Music speaks so loudly.

I'll never stop loving this song. The harmonies gave me ASMR-like stimulation long before I had any idea what ASMR was. Such a beautiful song that has helped me through some really difficult times (and overall is so very underrated). Definitely one of my favorites.
Her voice is beautiful, I hate how people turned this into a meme.
Ikr?
true. I still love this song and just ignore the memes so they don't ruin it for me.
+Benetikov Family wait meme?? what meme?
Zarria Bleu The, "Mmm, watch'cha say, you only meant well?" is a meme.
I like the deep ones that have this song

The lyrics in this song can be up for interpretation, because we all have different experiences. Ik the songs lyrics were originally meant to be about a kids perspective having divorced parents. But personally, this song leaves me reminiscing over old memories that made me happy before. I reminisce about being with my family, who at times it feels like they hate me. But this song always brings me back to before all the mistakes and arguments and confusion.
I hope this song gets people into Imogen Heap lol because her music is amazing
kobron1559 this is a girl :O shit lol
Black hawk gameing true I thought it was a dude.
Imogene still gives me chills after all these years
The original and ONLY Song allowed to have Imogen's lovely, "Whatcha say?" as a part of it.

I know this song has been destroyed by the memes, but I still love it. The whole song is well developed and the lyrics are alright.
Alright? The lyrics are about the holocaust.
@@brunobucciarati3251 It's about divorce lol.
I have never seen any memes of this song
Blame the O.C.
I was only made aware of this beautiful song BECAUSE of the Dear Sister skit. So, when you think about it like that, it's good that it was used in such a way.
I could imagine Freddy Mercury singing this
♥️
Yup
If only...
OHhhh that'd be epic

The lyrics at the part "Trains and Sewing Machines" is wrong, its "Trains and Soaring Machines", referring to airplanes. Acts of terrorism. That's why its called hide and seek, and the part "They were here first.". 9-11, and a terrorist act around her childhood where multiple tear gas bombs blew up a train, killing nearly all. "oily marks", from the bombs. The singer cleared this up for people before, although i have no idea when.
It's actually about the historical mistreatment of Native Americans, but whatever makes you feel smart, man.
EverythingIsMacabre 'Tis but the rumor (for what I've heard) is that it's about Imogen and her Parents divorce. .
There are thousands of theories, it's how you interpret the song that counts.
+Mani M
Yeah, i personally impertent it as about the halocaust. But you're right, its personal
IceColdCokeIt was officially about the divorce, but it's been interpreted many ways.
So Mr. Macabre, no need to condescend.
And the meme is born
right
lol😂😂😂
jake laler I don't care a bit
I was born in 2001, and I grew up in the wild west of TH-cam and later formative years of the internet in general. For so long this song has been a meaningless meme, but now: It's a masterpiece. This song deserves more recognition as one of the greats...big only it didn't get sampled
