"The 7th Sense" is hands down one of the BEST debuts in kpop ever. I didn't become an nctzen until 2017, but I was aware of NCT when T7S dropped and it was making waves...it was very unique, maybe not completely new in the grand scale of kpop, but a lot of people were not expecting this sound, style or look from a new SM boy group. For people who had been following NCT since predebut with SM Rookies (SM's program where they basically promoted their trainees in youtube, tv and live programs), they knew that there were more NCT members, but people who knew nothing about NCT's concept definitely thought there were only 5 to start. It was cleared up pretty quickly though because "Without You" was their second debut single that came out only a couple days after T7S and debuted Taeil and Kun, and even featured Winwin in that mv. And then 127 and Dream debuted just a few months later, so by the end of 2016, there were 15 confirmed NCT members known to the public! Mark was only 16 here! He was adorable and a crazy rapper already. And Taeyong! Our leader and center was absolutely stunning and captivating. There's an old joke about Ten's hair here too lol he said when they cut it he looked in the mirror in panic and said "where's my hair!"
Some trivia on T7S, the lyrics are basically the basis of NCT's entire dream based lore. The 7th sense is referring to dreams, obviously we have the 5, the 6th is death and NCT went beyond that for dreams. The lyrics talk about being stuck in a dream and needing to wake up to meet together and synchronize and become one basically. It's a fantastic song, still my favorite NCT U song, we haven't been able to get performances of this song for years, but we actually got a live performance during NCT's full group online digital concert in December 2020, with Shotaro (our newbie) filling in Taeyong's role because he was injured, which feels strangely poetic and very full circle.
"Baby Don't Stop" is just soooo intense. Those two together are lethal. Taeyong and Ten have similar energies and compliment each other well and they're both just hot. The live choreo of it is even better, they just move in such crazy ways. They're skinny legends for sure! The beat is similar to "Boss" as it was released on the same album (NCT 2018 Empathy album) and they were trying for a sense of cohesion throughout. "Go" by NCT Dream was also on that album and that feels a little reminiscent to me as well. Fun fact about this song, during Seoul's 2018 Pride Festival they released the most played music during the festival and half of NCT's 2018 releases were there and "Baby Don't Stop" was one of the top played and covered lol Taeyong and Ten have said before that a "Baby Don't Stop 2.0" could come so we've been waiting for 3 years for another iconic duo song like that and we're still waiting lol

As someone who stanned the second this song dropped... yep, their debut was THAT good. They also debuted with another song along with this one that's a little more pop, called Without You, that included Taeil (and Kun in the Chinese version), so technically it was all of them!

  • @risa5266

the 7th sense was a big cultural reset in 2016, it was totally unique and even now when people react to it they got amazed by it, a truly timeless classic.
and yes, even though there was only five members in the official debut (six, with taeil since he was in Without you, the other single they dropped together with t7s) everyone who followed them closely kinda of knew about the other members that debuted later because they were all part of smrookies project in the past!
btw for more context baby dont stop was the second song Ten ever featured as a nct member after the 7th sense, it was like his comeback after two years, taeten got everyone speechless with this track.

Yes it was only Taeyong, Mark, Doyoung, Jaehyun, and Ten at first with this single and then Taeil & Kun also with the single Without You which dropped the following day. Then 127 & Dream debuted later in the year which is when Haechan, Yuta, Winwin, Jeno, Jaemin, Chenle, Jisung, and Renjun all debuted. Then the other members joined periodically throughout the years.
I was actually around in 2016 when this dropped and it was extremely unique and out of the box especially for the trends at the time. I was a SHINee/EXO fan back in the day. I ended up leaving the kpop scene in from 2017-2019 and rediscovered NCT in 2020. In my case their music was wayyyy ahead of its time. My brain was too small to understand but I repent my sins and am a HUGE Nctzen now!!!

Your NCT journey was similar to mine😊. I'm a huge Shawol too back in 2016, in fact SHINee was the only group I was into, although I was aware of other SM groups. I watched all NCT units debut stages at the time (7S , Firetruck, Chewing Gum) , but not until Kick It (early 2020) I got hooked on 127 and then the rest of NCT (although somehow I already know all the member names, 21 of them).
I feel lucky cause I really got into them just before NCT 2020.

    • @Shawol930
      @Shawol930 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jhsuperiors3435 That's great to hear!! Yeah I was a huge Shinee fan from 2012-2016 but I always loved other SM artists. Since NCT debuted as I was on my out of the scene, I didn't get into them. Somehow the Youtibe algorithm suggested SuperM to me in August 2020. Tiger Inside was my gateway drug back into kpop and led me to NCT. I really got into NCT right during NCT 2020 , so I didn't appreciate Make A Wish and From Home for the significance they had at first. However, I got it together in time for 90s love to be my first real comeback!

A lot of the members were part of SM rookies which were trainees that didn't debut yet. SM would show them off on different shows and SMTOWN concerts in order to create hype and anticipation for them before their debut. So we knew a lot of the members before they actually debuted. Along with the 7th sense they also debuted with a song called Without You. This track was more vocal heavy so it featured Taeil, Doyoung, and Jaehyun (and Kun in the Chinese version of the song). So yeah they started off with Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun, Mark, and Taeil. But Nct 127 and Dream both debuted shortly after in 2016 too so we didn't have to wait that long to see the rest of the members anyways. 😂 This song is ICONIC for a debut. It was really impressive because before NCT debuted people mainly associated SM with ballads and R&B so it was cool to see them come out with a group that had more Hip Hop based music.

To answer your questions (as best as I can lol): before NCT debuted we already had some ideas about the members that were going to debut in 2016 and their respective subunits, at the time there was just NCT 127 without Jungwoo, NCT Dream and Ten (who ended up getting injured otherwise he would have probably ended up in 127).
When the 7th sense, aka NCT's first ever mv dropped with five members, it was obviously such a staple moment in NCT history that to this day the 5 members are named the OG five by many nctzens (some may also add Taeil since they dropped another song in the same period called without you featuring him+ Doyoung and Jaehyun).
There is also a term in ncity that nctzens use which is : 1st generation of NCT, this generation includes ALL the subunits that have been introduced that include at least one of the og five. Second generation is expected to begin this year with Shotaro and Sungchan (the newest members) 's unit.
As for the song, I can't say the the 7th sense was received well by the general public. The fans who were supporting them since rookie days LOVED it don't get me wrong, but it didn't gain much traction from a lot of non fans because of NCT's unusual concept as well as the fact that the 7th sense was what people tend to call "ahead of its time".
NOW, however, the 7th sense is acknowledged as one of the best (if not the best) debut in kpop history, it was and still is one of the most iconic songs out there just because it's so unique and intricate, it also showed how insane SM's newly debuted idols are in terms of talent! They literally dropped such a demanding song as their first ever release and made it look like they been in this game for years.
fun fact: to this day a lot of trainees are too scared to cover it because not only is the choreography is hard, but the vibe of the song is very hard to convey. It's very easy to make the moves seem forced/ too rehearsed or clumsy.
sorry for this long ass article lmao but I hope this was a little helpful.

I am a pink blood so become a NCtzen is natural with 7th sense but since EXO was so big in 2016 not many NCTzens there. The 7th sense, firetruck..basically they were too advance in 2016...people not ready for them. Chewing gums are categorized as kids song.
Emphaty era in 2018 ..albums only sold apprx. 300K. People questioned why NCT from SM could not on par with their predecessors.

Taeyong was credited as one of the writers in BDS (he even said that he finished the writing fast, because he liked the songs vibe) and i strongly think he's a lyrical genius, taeyong mentions a lot of people in his songs. (he also mentioned NANCY & SID in 'no manners' from superm, they're known for their toxic relationship.)
in BDS, he mentions the artists Mark Rothko, Auguste Rodin and Camile Claudel. Auguste & Camile were french sculptors. Claudel was Auguste lover although he was in a relationship with another women. they influenced each others art which usually contained sexual elements. their relationship in the verse represent beauty, passion & appreciating one anothers body.
the artist are sculptors which was smart to name them after this line "Stay, clay, stretch, dirt, dough, i'm gonna knead your body"
"I play in the paris" could mean the city which is known for art. it indicates thinking the person as art and them together will be artwork. but it could also be referring to the person 'Paris' from greek mythology, who is the lover of Helen and known for his beauty. which ties in the song well.
the lyrics are romantic & sexual at the same time, it just gives me another reason to love this song.
& taeyong is really a hardworking artist, never seen anyone like him. at the age of 17 he was casted and he knew nothing, he couldn't dance, rap, sing, act etc. his dance teacher gave up on him, but he didn't and it really shows. he is the only member with all 7 positions, which i'm actually really proud of. he said hardwork is never going to betray you and he was completely right, i could talk hours about him and i wouldn't get bored. taeyong has many songs that he's credited in, not only writing, but also producing and composing!

For somebody around when it debuted and was a hardcore stan of the company that directly competed with NCT's company, this song made waves for sounding different for sure.
Most boy groups at the time were releasing dynamic songs with like, choir like chorus singing and trumpets, flexing how high and long their singers could go, it all started to sound the same to me. This was like a breath of fresh air. JRE(KML) I believe has a reaction up from when the song was released.
SM was known to not have many good idol rappers at the time either, then T7S dropped and all of a sudden everybody in my kpop circles at the time were like "did you hear SMs new bg rappers???" Mark Lee especially was making waves.
Even as somebody that hated their company I was still listening to T7S (and Firetruck).
However the false rumors surrounding TY at the time made it so I didn't end up stanning the group, and I imagine that was the case for many others.
Ironically he finally hooked me in with BDS.

I remember watching some of the SM Rookie videos and the older comments were pretty harsh when discussing who the leader would be. A lot of people criticized Taeyong (this is where I'd recommend looking at the lyrics for Mad Life) and said he'd never be a leader and were really damn vicious - yet he's now the incredibly talented, competent, and caring leader of 23 (and counting) crackheads.
Edit: and I say crackheads with much love, because chaotic isn't a strong enough word to describe the entirety of NCT. 🤣

The 5 Kings are the start of NCT. Taeyong, Mark, Jaehyun, Doyoung, Ten. Everyone else was in training but these were the 5 chosen to let out the gate first. They took a lot of heat because their style has been different from everyone else since day one. Many in Kpop can't ride a beat like that, musicality is insane. The 7th Sense is known as the feared track to cover, if you don't have the swagga you can't pull it off. They used the elders to help lead with the structure of the NCT units. Taeyong: NCT 127, Mark: NCT Dream, Ten: WayV. The 7th Sense is the root of NCT, every unit.

From what I remember, NCT U's debut really took the kpop world by surprise. Mainly because it had been 4 years since SM debuted a new boy group (EXO debuted in 2012 and were extremely popular during this time so a lot of kpop fans had expectations for NCT when their debut was announced), and SM was never known for having a girl or boy group with a more hip-hop centered sound. So when the teaser for The 7th Sense came out, everyone was shocked and hyped because of Mark's rap verse that was showcased. Plus, the concept of NCT intrigued a lot of people, but some hated on it because they believed a group with "unlimited" members would never work (but look where NCT is at 5 years later!). This debut will remain iconic and was pretty much iconic the moment it dropped. And I was personally already familiar with some of the members because of SM's predebut "group" SM Rookies.
And to answer your question about what kpop sounded like in 2016, I can't really explain it lmao. There was definitely a tropical house trend going on, as well as darker concepts compared to now. 2016 is definitely one of my favorite years in kpop!

Some of us already knew the members prior to this debut because they were intorduced through smrookies, which was like a project that showcased the trainees under sm ent. at that time and most of them ended up in NCT and red velvet! The 7th sense was def a pleasant surprise tbh. As an sm stan, a music video and song like this is very unique, even in kpop in general actually. I LOVED it, just surprise that SM could produce a song like that, not underestimating them, it’s just that SM’s MV usually have a very different vibe but this was amazing as well.

Ahh, the Destroyer of Speakers… The 7th Sense. Boss was my intro to NCT, but these two songs kept me coming back for more. Had the privilege of seeing TaeTen perform Baby Don’t Stop live. So good. The MV was shot during the same time and city as Boss. My favorite NCT U song is Yestoday, followed closely by Light Bulb, with Misfit sneaking up as a third. Don’t get me started on 127 faves. Enjoyed your reaction!

this song was super unique and had everyone interested in nct, especially bc they kind of branched out of sm's usual sound with this.
and yes there were only 5 members but i think the literal next day they dropped another song called without you that added taeil (and kun in the chinese version) and then 127 and dream both debuted pretty soon after (127 with 7 members at the time) so the group got big pretty fast, i think after just a few months they had like 16 members?
a lot of the members also were active as sm rookies before their debut so they already had fans, like i remember seeing taeyong in a red velvet song and asking who that is only to find out that he didn't even debut yet. i think it took another two years until nct debuted but when they did i was immediately interested bc of him

I might have just become an NCTzen in 2019 but I was there when this dropped! And immediately stanned Mark and Ten lol. This was so unique in a way that it sounded different, had a unique aesthetic, and the choreo was crazy. I was super impressed when I first watched it because of the unique and super hard-looking choreo (I remember watching the performance video as well) and thought ‘wow SM always ups their game’ lol. I was espevially taken aback by how a kid (Mark) was there in the group 😂

In "The 7th Sense," what you are seeing, as part of NCT's dream concept, is supposed to be the use of the 7th sense. Humans have 5 physical senses -- sight, touch, hearing, taste and smell. The 6th sense would be, the ability to perceive or sense something that isn't there, like, for example, in the movie "The Sixth Sense" where the boy could sense ghosts. So in this MV SM used the "7th sense" to describe where NCT's dream state comes from. The 7th sense transcends the physical world and it deals with the dream realm. If you look up the English translation of the lyrics, you will see how they are all talking about dreaming, so each of the scenes within the MV is a different part of the dream or each of their individual dreams. (It's really worth looking up the lyrics to help understand NCT's concept and this song better.)
Yes, "The 7th Sense" came out April 4, 2016, and it is NCT-U's debut. As you saw, in this song and MV, there are 5 members who debuted as the first installment of NCT-U -- Taeyong, Mark, Ten, Jaehyun and Doyoung. This was a really important MV because it was the public's first introduction to NCT and it was NCT's first debut out of all of their sub-units.
Fun fact: Because Ten is Thai, they also have a Thai version of "Baby Don't Stop" -- there are live performances of Ten and Taeyong performing the Thai version, as part of their Thai promotions for this song, if you want to hear what it sounds like in Thai.
As you saw, "Baby Don't Stop" is a duo performance by two of the best dancers in NCT. So this is more of a dance song than a song that is lyric heavy. However, I think this song also does a pretty good job of highlighting what great vocalists Ten and Taeyong are as well. Ten is an amazing singer and Taeyong, as you know, is considered a rapper of the group, but he is also a great singer. However, as you can see from these videos, they are both multi-talented.That is why SM chose them to be a part of a duo project.
The MV for "Baby Don't Stop" was filmed in the winter in the Ukraine, at the same time and in the same location as the MV for "Boss." So that is why you might notice that "Boss" and "Baby Don't Stop" have similar looks and vibes.
You should also check out the dance practice video for "Baby don't Stop" because the performance version of "Baby Don't Stop" is a little different and it incorporates backup dancers and "The 7th Sense" choreography is even better when you see it without any cuts or edits.
If you want to see a behind the scenes of NCT's time in the Ukraine and the filming of "Baby Don't Stop" th-cam.com/video/G72xhw4mqKw/w-d-xo.html, as well as several Vlog videos that were shot by the members during filming -- Search SM's TH-cam channel for "In Ukraine."
NCT are kind of known for their Vlogs and several members pretty much document all aspects of their daily life, and SM posts the videos on its TH-cam channel/NCT's channels. NCT has several channels -- each of the sub-units have their own channel. They also have an NCT Dance channel where videos of the members showing off their freestyle dances and special choreography videos that aren't part of official NCT activities are posted -- Taeyong and Ten both have several freestyle and solo choreography videos on NCT's dance channel, as well as other members such as Mark. They also have an NCT Music channel where they post videos of the vocalists singing covers of songs, among other song related content, and they have an NCT Daily channel where they post behind the scenes videos and some of the members special volg series, such as Johnny's Communication Center and pretty much anything the members film to showcase what they do in their daily lives.
Yes, Ten has an amazing voice, that is why he is a lead vocalist and center of NCT, as well as one of the best dancers in the industry. That is also why he is the NCT member, so far, with the most solo projects because SM likes to showcase his dancing and vocals. Ten grew up attending an international school in Thailand where they spoke English most of the time, so he is pretty much fluent in English. So several of his solo songs, such as "New Heroes" and "Dream in a Dream," are in English. He can almost speak English better than he can Thai. LOL Ten actually is pretty close to fluent in at least 4 languages, which includes Thai, English, Korean, and now Mandarin. So, that is one of the reasons why he is a member of WayV because his grandparents are Chinese and he is good at learning languages. And it's also why both Taeyong and Ten were made members of SuperM.
NCT-U is the group that can have any number of NCT members in it depending on the concept for the song. So even though they debuted with 5 members, you will see that NCT-U is always changing up the members and the style and sound of the group is constantly changing. NCT-U songs can have anywhere from all the members or only 1 or 2 members. The U stands for United, but I also like to think of it as Universal because of the way the group never has a fixed number of members.
About 3 months after NCT-U debuted, in July 2016, Taeyong, Mark and Jaehyun debuted again as original members of NCT-127 with the song "Fire Truck" -- along with new members Taeil, Yuta, WinWin and Haechan.
And then about a month later, in August 2016, Mark debuted yet again, for the third time, as part of NCT-Dream -- the only NCT member to debut in all 3 original groups -- along with Haechan, and new members Jeno, Jaemin, RenJun, Chenle and Jisung. With their song "Chewing Gum." As you know, Mark is the oldest member of Dream and the team leader of the sub-unit, and he was only 17 during all of these debuts.
However, NCT was actually introduced to the media in February 2016 as part of SM's new Neo Culture Technology concept. If you want to see NCT's official debut showcase check out th-cam.com/video/Ky5NvWsXnn8/w-d-xo.html. (Skip to 16:00 this is the part that has to do with NCT.) You don't necessarily need to react to it if you don't want, but you should check it out. I think it's kind of interesting to hear Lee SooMan's (SM's founder) explanation about the creation of Neo Culture Technology and it's cool to see the epic way NCT was introduced to the media. The very first members of NCT entered wearing masks and their identities were revealed as they removed their masks. Lee SooMan is kind of known for being a little extra and going over the top and this presentation is a good example of that. LOL NCT's concept has always been centered on different aspects of dreams and dreaming, so part of the showcase sets up the group's dream concept.
And it even shows how SM had always planned for NCT's Chinese sub-unit to debut from the very beginning, but it just took the company a long time to figure out how to navigate all the political issues with China, so WayV (originally planned to be called NCT-V) didn't actually end up debuting until 2019, almost 3 years later.
Musicality, amazing vocals, unbelievable harmonies -- all the members sing to create those harmonies -- and impressive dancing is what you just need to come to expect from anyone from SM Entertainment. That is just what SM has become known for and it's now what is expected from anyone who is part of the company. SM cultivates talent in all aspects of performance. And that is what makes them one of the top companies in the industry and why they are one of the Big 3. You can't be an SM artist without having amazing vocals and dance skills and being great rappers is just a bonus. None of SM's rappers were chosen because of their rap skills. They were first recognized for their vocals and/or dancing, and after joining the company SM helped them discover their talent and ability as rappers. Therefore, even SM's rappers could be main vocalists, and a lot of their vocalists are pretty good rappers.
