    My first fortress was called Toothkind. I spent an hour researching and prepping an ideal crew of carefully trained Dwarfs, found the perfect spot with a river, good cliffs, plenty of wood, forage and hunting, interesting features not too far away on the map. They embarked right next to a pack of lions, who instantly attacked, sending everyone into panic.
    It took a week for the last of them to die.

Literally in just a tiny region of a huge world there is so much history. Necromancer dynasties, devastating wars leaving settlements barren and flooding others with refugees, towns overrun with criminals, sorcerers, prophets and charlatans. It's so fun, almost too fun. Definitely can see why DF got its place in the MOMA, and I never would've gotten into it if it weren't for the steam release. Late to the party but recently started playing DF. These guides have been a life saver. Had to revisit this one to remember how to customize squad training regiments. I adjusted it to have a guy patrol my main staircase because I have a freaking badger infestation. Not giant ones or anything, just regular badgers that my hunters can't keep up with. I like to put training grounds outside the fortress, to reduce cave adaptation on my soldiers so they can fight on the surface and aren't recycling beer everytime they need to smack down a werecritter. I'm also fond of building at surface level and getting a pretty good town going for a lot of work with surface resources like woodworking, fishing, hunting, as well as a public tavern. Wall it all off and you have a proper fortress and not a prarie dog hole.

    One thing I was curious about is how do you handle unhappiness? In both of my beginner forts, the Happiness levels are good until I start getting migrants. At roughly 60-70 is when I start getting really unhappy dwarves and it just gets worse from there, usually spiraling into tantrums. I know how to check for unmet needs but I don't understand what many of them actually mean and how to resolve them.

    ~4:00 You don't necessarily /have/ to have ranged dwarves dressed in leather: the eqpt can be changed to (eg) steel mail. HOWEVER there's a long-standing bug that may still be extant in this version that precludes ranged troops from equipping correctly if equipped directly; choosing the generic 'archer' setup then changing eqpt somehow avoids this problem
    ~6:30 Armour/weps can't be made from gold except occasionally & randomly by a moody dwarf: that's purely for decoration &/or trade. Silver, OTOH, is v useful for eg maces & warhammers (it's heavy but soft, so won't hold a sharp edge), or even xbow bolts!
    ~11:00 Perhaps setting the archery range for your rookie dwarves with the target placed next to the doorway isn't such a good idea? Just a thought.. ;)
    ~19:00 It's a good idea to have a min 3 ppl training at one time: 1 will be the teacher while the other 2 spar. If you've filled your squads, /do not/ set all members to train at the same time: there won't be enough slots for all at once anyway; ensure at least a couple of them are patrolling/WHY instead (they can rotate duties so they all have a chance to train over time)

    7:58 I have a feeling you're either misunderstanding the visual update or it's just the fast pace, but you didn't include metals in there, hence why there's no copper there later (probably still hanging around in the smelter). For anyone reading: Left part is category, consisting of subcategories, consisting of individual items - to have all types of bars you have to click "all" above the _center_ one, not the right one. Clicking "all" on the right only includes everything in the subcategory - ash, coal, soap blocks etc.
    Or "all" in the "Bars: metal" in this case specifically.
    I just saw a similar issue in one the previous tutorials and thought I'd chime in.

    Hey Nook I am loving your new Dwarf Fortress steam tutorials, really helpful.
    Finally trying DF for the first time but it's not been easy understanding all of its systems. Rimworld makes it very easy to check "beauty" values of rooms and objects, this beauty value also affects my colonists moods relative to their surroundings, bedrooms, dining halls, etc; was wondering if DF has something similar?
    Does building material affect Workshops performance? If not, does it affect anything else? Like if I use a valuable material to build it does it affect my Dwarves moods when near it? I understand dwarves have different tastes, but is it just flavour text or does it affect their moods relative to the clothes they are using? if i make jewelry and new clothes do they automatically equip them according to their tastes?

      building material has no impact on workshops beyond the colour and description. Dwarfs do seem to claim and equip non-armor things based on preference, I've had dwarves take some of my porcelain crafts (bracelets and things) to wear around

    Ive never gotten soap to make that way, soap seems like one of those buildings that--it can only take its ingredients out of a stockpile, and not from other stations inventory. I had to wait for them to put tallow and lye in a linked stockpile to make it. It will not make soap if the tallow is still in the kitchen.
    Also, on default settings the kitchen is set to cook tallow, like it is plump helmets. Those trying to make soap should tick that off.

    Is there any way to equip dwarves so they can defend themselves if they get attacked while just existing ? It feels strange that I'd need to tell a squad to go get their weapons, and then attack a specific monster that's harassing my dwarves or animals, then to go back to their day jobs when the mob is dead. Surely dwarves can be smart enough to at least carry around a dagger and retaliate if they spot a hostile ?
    This is mostly a big deal because the game goes so fast and I keep missing entire combats where my side loses badly because they didn't have any equipment and i couldn't respond quickly enough.

      @andregoepfert2745 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably figured it out by now, but as far as I know there is no "money" in the game only barter trade (you can theoretially craft gold/silver coins and use them for trade). I.e. you just try to buy as much as you can from the trader with your crafts (usually the trader will only trade with you if they are the ones making the "profit" too, so maybe they are the ones very happy now :D )

    Please explain: If I build the butcher, the kitchen, and the soap maker: will the fat be collected automatically, or do I need to tell them what to do? I can't seem to make leather or soap for the life of me.

    • @youngclopen
      @youngclopen ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fat and leather will be made automatically as long as you haven’t changed the default standing orders. You will get some every time an animal is hunted or you designate one of your own animals for slaughter. Fat requires empty buckets available to be moved around.
      Edit: saw in another comment, hadn’t been an issue for me but make sure your kitchen isn’t allowed to cook fat/tallow either that could be burning it.

    For me-
    For some reason, lye is getting put into barrels in stockpiles instead of staying in buckets.
    The soap maker needs "lye containing item" like a bucket with lye.
    So I set all stockpiles to custom and turned off lye.
    This forced them to stay in the workshop in buckets of lye.
    The soap workshop is... Saying I don't have any lye containing items still...
    So now I've got several barrels full of lye, the ashery full of lye in buckets.
    But I can't make soap.

    OMG the game uses tallow same as we do it's a taste enhancer for food. @Nookrium It's a very common issue. Love your guides but it's OK to not speed through or use the description in pause, built during a cut and show finsl. Same time common oopsties we all make add the flavor.
    Solution to the tallow not being available is ...
    1. Put the job in the managers roster and at the top set to make 10 soap if supply is less than 5 and initially at least turn off the permission for the kitchens to use tallow for cooking. Game logic .... Food before other use and player logic ... I can do soap anytime. And be sure to have that ash order before the tallow one in the daily que and both before food.
