A very enjoyable interview piece for me. Well done! I am impressed how humble, down to earth and enthusiastic Leland Sklar is about his extensive experience and impressive accomplishments. He is top notch and inspiring as a musician and as a person.
To hear Leland say about Tommy what I've known for almost 50 years does my heart good. I saw Tommy in '76 and I have my parents to thank for that, that show was my 17th birthday present. I'll never forget that night. Feb. 24th, 1976. El Paso, Tex.
@@stephenshepherd1917 Billy Cobham's Spectrum album has Tommy wailing on the guitar with his echoplex! Your mind will be blown after hearing it. I guarantee it!!!
Tommy Bolin was incredible...just listen to "from the archives vol. I" great songwriter, very versatile. His version of "you know you know" was superb.
I wasn't conscious until the height of the pandemic lockdown that Leland Sklar had been involved in the jazz fusion movement in the first half of the 70s. By the time I caught the video of him playing along to the original Billy Cobham take of "Stratus", I had learned Mr. Sklar had begun as an upright player and then added electric bass to his palate. That's when it made sense that he was part of that movement and had cut the *Spectrum* album with Billy. One thing he mentions that I wasn't conscious of before 2024 was the presence of Dr Robert Moog with those prototype electronic drums. This is around the same time that Emerson Lake and Palmer recorded their tour de force album *Brain Salad Surgery.* I Know Carl Palmer played electronic drums of his own on that record. Were they the same type that Billy played
Always get sad thinking about Tommy Bolin. What a shame, he was a monster player. Only saw him once during his brief time in the James Gang, unfortunately he was definitely not all there that night. Luckily we got his two solo albums after that ,still listen to them. Keep the drugs under control everybody. Stick to the weed keep away from everything else.
