- This is a short and simple review of a 1999 Pontiac Trans am. LS1 5.7 engine and T-56 6 speed transmission. A full bolt on car with heads, cam, intake.
The debate of, is this car "too old, outdated, and there are better cars to buy now", or is this a car that is still affordable enough that this car is still, "the best bang for your dollar and a car that has withheld it's stand the test of time." My opinion is, "HECK YES, GET YOUR HANDS ON ONE WHILE YOU CAN!!" What's your thoughts on this; the 98-02 Trans Am???
This is my re-entry into getting behind a camera since 2018 and my intro to being in front of the camera. This time, I'm doing what I should have done years ago! Absolutely love my 95 Trans Am Comp with a built 5.7 LT-1 and only 90 k original miles!! Such a fun car to drive, as far as my daily driver I have a 2001 Firebird with the 3.8 performance package and it gets great mileage as well as looking pretty sharp and being very dependable!!
Is the 3.8 still fun to drive? Looking at one and a 5.7 ls1 but the v6 is half the price
@@joepearlzz8504 honestly, i drove both. i own a ls1. save for an ls1. doesnt need to be the ws6. just get 98-02 and youll have a ton of fun.

By far my DREAM CAR as far as daily drivers go Of course I have a certain build setup in mind but looks great and an awesome base to start off on with while you build it up ...love this car truly is a forgotten gem(i hope it stays that way until I snag mine which I'm working towards now) ,love the sound of the engine and it feels like a great blend of ol school muscle in a newer body,T-Tops look great on or off summer/winter, it's a head turner while still being a beast, got muscle and comfort,nice lines looks like an attacker and has deep low tone rumbles as American muscle should
i just want top tier bolt ons and i'll be happy

Love my 98 Formula. Best upgrade was changing the gearbox from 4L60E to T56 Magnum-F wide ratio and final drive gears from 2.73 to 3.73.
I just picked up my 2nd auto WS6 2001 TA . Love it. My other is a 99 WS6 Formula 6 speed.
I own a dark navy blue color 2001 WS6 model trans am with the LS1...all original and stock. I love my Trans Am !!! I actually traded my 2011 dodge challenger to get it. Don't regret that trade for a second either. I think these Trans Ams are a great investment. Hard to find I believe and I have not yet seen another one driving down the roads where I live. Mine is the auto tranny model and I'm cool with that, I'm not into driving like a gear head. It sounds great and feels like a monster coming down the road.

I'm in the same boat, almost! I just traded my 2010 Challenger r/t for a red 2001 WS6 a few months ago-stock with only 24k original miles. No regrets at all, it's easily my favorite car I've ever owned. Grats on your purchase!
Owned a 96 Firebird since 1997 and bought my 16 year old a 99 Trans Am in 2021. Her first car. Insurance is easy on these! Found a low mileage, garage kept TA with 99K on it for 7K.
Not a bad deal! Enjoy!
If its been maintained properly, it will give her another 100K of fun. Do a few upgrade projects with her on the car. She will learn about cars, and have memories of you and her forever.
Worth buying? I would pour honey on my junk then sit in a bed of fire ants...while simultaneously digging my eyeballs out with a plastic spork...and listening Kenny G's greatest hits on repeat for that car!!! That's the sickest car that Pontiac has produced since the 69 GTO Judge Ram Air IV. That car was WAY ahead of it's time. Even now...20 years later it still looks better than any car made today. Pontiac definitely hit a homerun...or actually a grand slam when they made that car. I've dreamed of having one since they came out in the 90s and I was a teenager. I WILL own one before I die

Absolutely they are. After looking for a 98-02 WS6 Trans Am and finding so many that were pounded to hell with high miles and crazy asking prices, I decided to search for a low milage, well maintained W68 Firebird. This past summer I found a little something that I bought. A 98 W68 Y87 Firebird. The couple I bought it from owned the car since 2001 I believe and kept it in a climate controlled garage for 20+ years. There's not a spot of rust anywhere on the car. The car is loaded and stock with 88k miles. Grey leather interior, monsoon radio, LSD, front air damn, Trans Am stirring rack, chrome rims, dual exhaust, I think the suspension is the same as a Trans Am too...49 options were added on the build sheet. Aside from the front clip, rear bumper and hatch spoiler, all my bird would need is two more pistons to be a Trans Am. It's funny because this V6 bird handles like my 96 Trans Am did. It kinda threw me off when I first drove it. Even though I love the LS1 TAs, I'm really pleased with my Y87 Firebird. Twice I've been offered more than what I payed for it.
So in my opinion, if you can't get your hands on a TA look for a Y87 Firebird. Apparently they're not all that common. And if anything, you buy a Y87 for cheap and throw an LS1 in it. The W68 is a sport appearance package while the Y87 is a performance package.
LS1 are too rare and really expensive. You are better off dropping in a LQ or LY6 engine. Larger engine and way more performance ability. That's what I did with my 97 RS Camaro.
Or just buy a base model Trans Am still has the same LS engine
@@neilbrown82 if you can find a base Trans Am that's under 100k miles and under $15k that isn't a pile of crap. I got more bang for my buck considering I paid under $10k for it.

@@neilbrown82 that's great. I couldn't find even a base Trans Am in my area that had less than 120k miles and that was under $15k. Can't even tell you the amount I found that had lots of issues. Most I found were around $20k. These cars aren't common in my area.
I love my 95 trans am! I bought it as a garage only car. Had like 50k miles. I put about 20k on it in 2 yrs and I will continue to drive it as much as possible! Love this car! I drive it all summer but no winter driving

Yeah. Good video. Firebirds are keepers. WS6 is king. I still have my 2001 Camaro SS. When all Camaros become extinct again, all F-bodies will go up in value. They kept their value back before the 5th gens came out. You watch.

Trading my WS6 was one of the most regrettable things I’ve ever done, I’d probably still pick it over one of the modern muscle cars.

i bought a 2000 camaro ss hardtop m6 the end of 2019 for 8000 its one of the cars i wanted since high school.
Man its so hard to find a unmolested WS6 in Blue with a 6sp at a reasonable price
I have a 89 formula 350 WS6 and opted to replace the 5.7 LT motor with a Chevy crate 383 stroker motor fuel injected. Motor bolted right up too my stock transmission and changed out the rear from the 3:42 gears to a 12 bolt 390 gears. I’ll be more than happy to take on a LS I’m pushing out over 450hp and the car is light as a feather.

Is this right hand drive ? This is my dream car, its a shame they didnt sell these in the uk. I love F body cars, a few wrre imported but i have only ever seen 1. I think the closest we have is the occasional corvette, toyota supra mk 3 or mitsubishi 3000 Gto. All of which i love but in terms of value, i think these cars are best, they can be driven every day as a regular car, looke amazing

An LS6 intake is definitely not a fast 92 intake but it is still a very good intake all 2001-02 cars they were oem

Here in Washington I’d say your paying a third more for a ws6 over a camaro ss. The value is there.
The weight advantage over newer cars is insane. And they are getting rarer. Anything with an ls is relevant.
You're absolutely right! The Formula/trans am and camaro Z28/SS are great values even into today's overpriced market!
I think it's more like 50+% more for a WS6 over an SS here in AZ. The LS1 Camaro SSes are nice, but the WS6 is in a looks class all its own. They will go down in classic car history as one of the coolest looking cars ever. (I say this as a 2002 M6 Camaro SS owner.)

I’ve often considered selling my 2000 ws6 for a 2011 ish camaro SS but never could do it. These cars are just to unique and honestly a blast! Nothing else like it on the road you know a T/A when you see one no matter what generation.

I've owned fourth gen Firebirds for 23 years and I still love them. They aren't perfect, but nothing is. I still daily drive one, including the Ohio winter.

Being 40, these cars were the ultimate goal in HS. Today I own a CTS-V1, but I STILL want a firehawk
There are quicker cars built today, but........ None of them have the style of my 3 2002 Birds. Two Trans Am Firehawks & a WS6. I love these cars & God willing, I will die owning all three. My red Hawk & ws6 were bought new in March of 2002. My sunset orange Hawk was bought in 2019.
I love these cars but, unless you already own one they are very close to being out of reason for a lot of people. $15K for a decent 20+ year old T/A or Formula that hasn't been ragged out or chopped up is a lot to ask.
Corvettes from the same era are probably the better deal. They weigh 400 lbs less and make the same power and accept the same mods.
Gen 5 Camaro's are a better car with more power and less style. It's a shame GM was so short sighted in shuttering Pontiac while keeping Buick. Ugh.

That's a fair argument... unless you just want the Trans Am. I paid 20k for mine, and do not regret it. I know I could have bought a 5th gen Camaro or C5. But I didn't want to daily drive a Vette, and after looking at a couple of 5th gen Camaros they just weren't for me. The T/A is easier to see out of and better looking in my opinion. Plus, it was the car I wanted in high school. To some people the 'logical' arguments just won't matter, they want the Trans Am. And I don't blame them!
Mine is an 01 sunset orange WS6, set up maybe exactly the same as the video car. The reason i've watched this video a couple times is because its the only one that sounds just like mine.
Love that sunset orange, I had a 98 black TA that I street raced the hell out of. Sold it years later missed it so much I lucked into an 01 Black TA it's got 42000 miles and was bine stock when I bought it.

They certainly hold up when modified a bit like that one against the newer Camaro's, Mustang GT's and Challengers, due to the weight difference. My 2002 runs mid 11's with cam/heads and a decent converter, and my dad's 2018 SS runs low to mid 12's bone stock. My car as it sits with 155k on the odometer (I've daily driven it since 2004) would probably sell for around 12k in this market, and that's really good value for an LS car in good condition.
4l60s and ten bolts like to go boom . I own two fourth gen tas . One hard launch with traction is death other then that amazing cars

@@racingjunk7024ya that’s cap, these blow out w constant abuse especially when dumbasses buy these at 100k plus miles and don’t do any preventive maintenance. Done plenty of massive burnouts completely stock, the trans and diff are known for blowing out once you start modding but they can handle stock power easily

I have gotten to drive a 6 speed 96 I think it was Z28. That thing was a piece of crap but the car was still VERY fast. The fastest car I ever got to actually drive was this beyond gorgeous automatic black and gold TA. That thing was the most violently FAST car I have ever driven. It was an automatic. Fastest automatic I ever drove. It had every piece of high performance parts you could think of. I just remember tapping the gas was enough to make traffic vanish.

I just bought my 02 ws6 with 18k miles on her. She is completely stock. Have new rims, cam, exhaust and intake on the way.

I have a '98 Z28 Conv. 91k auto. I still don't know how people drive with a manual trans.. I already have to steer with my knees since if you have one arm out of the window and the other holding a cellphone, it kind of puts steering further down on the importance list.

I got a 99 firehawk, I describe it the same way, early 2000s street racer spec: heads cam intake exhaust. The car still turns heads.
my "daily" is a 2nd owner 1998 ls1 formula firebird ...mild performance mods, but full suspension build... cause lifes to short to drive a boring car!

I'm seriously considering a 02 WS6 manual.
I currently own an all stock 02 Trans Am WS6 ram air black for 12 years now and still love it as much as the day I bought it. Only has 60K on the clock. I always get thumbs up and nice car comments from people when I take it out for a cruise. I also own two V6 firebirds, a MRM 2000 and a artic white 1998.
All you have to do is park a fbody next to regular car.. and look back
The trans am is definitely not worth the price anymore unless you are buying for the name not the car itself, formula is a much better choice you can buy a good condition formula for 10k even in Cali, unlike the trans am that are 30k plus for decent condition
Good ones are still out there. The owner of this trans am paid $10,000 not that long ago and it's just about perfect considering it has 140k miles. Sometimes you have to travel for what you really want!
With cars (and most things), you pay more for looks. Most people don't like the look of the late 4th gen Formulas as much as the Trans Ams. And its hard for me to argue, I think they nailed it with the Ws6 Trans Am from the late 4th generation.
I do, however, think the early 4th gen Formulas (LT1) look better than the Trans Ams from those years.
A anniversary special addition sold on auction for 20k.. it is still a good buy
I think they are worth it. But the RHD is not for me

wow i just bought a m6 convertible 99 ws6. i really dig it because i couldnt afford a c5, i picked it up for 13,500 with 100k on the dash. really really well kept. no rust but the paint is fading on the ram air hood. i hope it was a good call because im dailying it lol.

also the car is legit bone stock. i was gonna weld in some subframe connectors, some lowering springs, and redo all the bushings with some bigger c5 wheels. i already have all the parts lol. or should i just leave it stock i figured hey man, 100k on the dash and bone stock would make a fun car to mod up a bit.

@@supermcbrian I'd definitely do the SFC. You wont regret it. I got a bunch of BMR stuff on mine (SFC, STB, driveshaft loop, adj LCA, adj Panhard, Adj Torque Arm, etc) and Eibach Pro Kit lowering springs. I run the stock ZR1 wheels on 275 Michelin Pilots in cold weather, and nobody can see any of the mods. It will make the car tighter.

Yeah, I think this and the C5 are going to go down as the ones to have from my generation. People will add in the Terminator and Cobra Mustangs from this era, but I don't think they are that visually appealing. These LS1 Ws6s are already starting to be viewed as a classic.
I bought a 2000 6 speed ws6 convertible a little over a year and a half ago, less than 32,000 miles on when I got it. I love the car sooo much it just brings a smile to my buddys and myself with the top down.
I got a beautiful bolt-on, s60 rear, 00 WS6, never get looks tho. I bought it 7 or 8 years ago for 10k cash. I also bought it bc everyone else had camaros or mustangs.
Love 99 TA, finally got my hands on a WSQ hood. Next is some HRE's and Bruan seats. Love is understatement
Put it this way...bought my 02 T/A WS6 Convertible for 11 grand in 16....its now worth 20-25 grand...hell ya.

Awesome video! I have two 4th gens personally, a 1999 t/a and 01 formula both 6 speeds, ones a daily driver and the other is a garage queen. They really do check all the boxes, they do everything a Japanese 90s poster car does for a fraction of the price. I think the opportunity to buy one at a decent price is going away in the very near future, there's very few nice ones left. It's so easy to find a nice c5, finding a nice ls1 trans am is impossible.
Or, settle for a catfish like i did 😄 i had a 98 trans am i sold in 2016, and regret it badly. I didn't even have to sell it. it just had a lot of miles and needed new stuff. 6spd with full slp exhaust and ls6 intake. Smh.

If I wasn't a broke sob i'd have one and rebuild it like i've done with my truck, i've done so much work on my truck i'm proud by the time i'm done it will be a marvel.
I know a guy that has a WS6 that's 3 second 0-60 it's loud as fuck and super clean, he has his own auto shop so he had the sickest body kit for it, looks like a trans am lambo.
