    Installing OVM through Raspberry PI was a real nightmare. I had to reinstall Raspberry Pi Lite + OVM at least 4 times and waste a 1T microsd non cat 10 to the trash and use ovm-firstaid to recover the misconfigured eth0 interface due to interface renaming to get my own static IP. I spent about one week to get 5 minutes of this awesome video. I hope all this effort worth. Every second of this video is definitelly valuable. Thank you so much.

    • @HaukesProjects
      @HaukesProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi @1964gerrit ... you are doing it right - but the docker structure has recently changed: You now need to go to system>plugins (after you installed omv-extras, and have checked the "docker-repo" box under system>omv-extra) and install the "openmediavault-compose" plugin (just search for "compose"). After that, "compose" should show up under services ... here you can now set up docker. Hope this helps.

    • @HaukesProjects

      fair question ... the 1st stick is the install medium - the 2nd is for when you choose to use a USB stick as your OS drive ... you can use any USB port (I happen to have an internal one, so it's a bit "cleaner") - you will also need to Install the “flashmemory” Plugin (@9:59)

    If you do not use any(!) of the RAID options it's just JBOD! (Just Bunch Of Disks) That's how I use OMV

    • @HaukesProjects
      @HaukesProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well ... kind of - you don't have to use hardware RAID or software RAID to achieve a RAID benefit - snapraid (as described here (@11:30 & 18:35 - 23:05) gives you the benefit of a parity drive (that is different than say level 0 or level 1 RAID)

    I have a question: I am building the OMV 7 with test (small) hard drives to see if it works ok and fast. when finished, I would like to buy large drives and fill up a mergerfs to get the thing running. My question is that I have these test drives and referenced to everything, can I just delete the share or do I have to go and find every reference to that share?

  • @steveholmes381
    @steveholmes381 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Cautionary tale - you now need to build a second one as a backup NAS, but then you don't want to mess up the configuration of the first one trying out new things, so you need to build a third one as a test bed.
    But then the experts say to keep a backup off site, will this never end ? 😂😂😂😂😂

    Hi, I have viewed this video and is impressed of your way of explaining this. I have an OMV6 with some disks (mirror) and started with OMV4 and has upgraded. Found you recently and will continue listen. If I my ask, I would like an video about hot to handle disks that get red och yellow marks as status in the Devices panel. To be safe with a OMV server for lots of videos and photos it has to be handled when you reach problem. Also, how do you backup and restore your OS-disk?

    My OMV 5 server died yesterday. I'm optimistic that it's just the PSU. Been years since I've had to touch any settings so I'm hoping I don't need to reinstall. But if I do, this video will be helpful.

      @@HaukesProjects So I bought a new PSU but before installed it, I tried plugging in the old PSU with the new power cord. Just on a whim. And it powered up. Didn't expect that.
      However that was the end of the good news.
      The machine won't boot. Heck, I can't even get it to POST. But, I bought the motherboard and CPU in 2009. So I definitely got my money worth because I think the board and CPU were less than $120 combined.
      Because I'm cheap I bought a used board and CPU which were very inexpensive because they use DDR 3 and I didn't want to buy new RAM.
      So I got those in the mail yesterday and need to put them in the case.
      I'll probably also take the operating system disk and clone it to a SSD that I forgot I bought years ago. More reliable than a mechanical drive.

    Hi, I installed Debian 11 32bit without interface, on an old hard disk and single core 32 bit CPU. After that I ran the script to install omv6. After finishing the installation there was a problem, I was partially displaying the web interface and solved the problem by installing Udisks2. I am doing various tests before creating a more important build. How can I do to properly configure the firewall? I set up rules for https and samba but when I save the changes the operating system fails to download updates however the web interface works correctly.

    To my experience (at least 3 months ago), NFS of OMV6 has high CPU usage and often slows my server. I'm not sure if I'm the only one but just in case, here's some of my setup:
    - OMV6 is running in a Proxmox VM, disk are passthrough with 1 CPU
    - NFS shares are through a Docker Containers (Jellyfin) and also Mounted to my Linux PC
    - CIFS is disabled during this
    I had better luck with CIFS in the same setup to this date, I haven't tested NFS again but if anyone knows what's up

      I am running OMV6 on my QNAP TS-459 Pro for abt. 5/6 years now, OS of QNAP for this NAS was eol, to be honest I never used Docker as being an old hat to me it only adds more resources needed. Have NFS and SMB/CIFS running as I have Debian bookworm (testing) and Windows systems running. CPU utilization idle 6% under load (playing a video on my HTPC) between 20% to 40% CPU Atom D510 @ 1.66GHz RAM 2GB. Using the backport kernel from Debian and not he proxmox one.

      some Windows computers seem to have that issue (I have one of 5 that behaves like that - despite being configured the same way) - I have accessed it by entering the IP address in file explorer and than create a DT shortcut once it get there - same result as going there via Network. You also may want to poke around the omv forum for similar comments: forum.openmediavault.org/index.php?thread/27209-windows-cannot-access-openmediavault/ ... hope this helps 👍

      hmmm ... I talk about 2 different ways to install the flashmemory plugin in the video - I suggest you review 9:59 - 11:33, try either/both, then restart and you should see an improvement (worked for me, worked for others) ... if neither works for you, please be more specific with what you mean by "cant find" and "cant download it through ssh" - neither should give you trouble if you follow the steps as described (make sure you don't have typos and/or weir firewall stuff going on)

    Can't be installed on a NVME drive??

    • @HaukesProjects
      @HaukesProjects  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried it myself, but I don't see why not ... (maybe someone else here has had a similar experience?)
      I would make sure the NMVE drive works and is installed before you boot ... and that you tell the system in the BIOS to boot from USB (you will probably also see the NVME drive as an option if the system recognizes it) - that way your system SHOULD be aware of the NVME drive, but prioritize the USB in the boot sequence

      For the past year or so, I have had a GMK J4125 mini Nucbox running OMV that is installed on the internal m.2 sata drive and works like a champ, so I don't see why a nvme would not work here. Btw, I also have OMV installed on a PiZero2 just for fun, and although it is slow, it works, I have my Linux distros and lots of documents on its Samsung 1Tb portable SSD.

      @@luisbperez368 Thank you for your answer, now, the most important thing for me is to know why the installation does not pass the IPv6 check... after that the only thing I have is a blue screen without any kind of interaction.

      @@juancarlosgarcia3025 I assume you are referring to the step titled "Attempting IPv6 autoconfiguration" (around 5:05 in this video) ... while I haven't experienced it before, I did a little research and found that apparently some ISPs have their routers set to "disable PIV6" (or they have "bridge" mode enabled) - so the omv installer gets confused when you don't have a DHCP server handing out ipv6 addresses. I suggest you try the following: First, log into your router and turn on DHCP & IPV6 (in case it isn't already) ... if that fails, try to hit alt-f2 and kill the dhcp v6 process (I believe it proceeds on just fine after that). - Hope this works ... let us know. (if all fails, you could try to do the install w/o the cat5 (internet) cable plugged into your machine and configure that part under "network" in the GUI later - but that may end up being more complicated)

    my data transfer speed seem to be capped at 40MBps any suggestions on how to increase this speed?

    • @HaukesProjects
      @HaukesProjects  ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmm ... not sure if you truly mean "Mbps" - 40 Mbps would be 5 MB/s ... and that would indeed be VERY low ... 40 MB/s on the other hand is not THAT low for this setup (I often see 40-100 MB/s copying speed (also using old hardware to copy from: 10 yr old desktop, SATA II, old NIC, simple router, ...). Are you seeing average, max, or lows in at 40MB/s (or Mbps?) ... and what is you setup (hardware)? - keep in mind, an old setup like the one I am describing here has a potential MAX read/write @ 300MB/s (SATA II)- but that goes for each component - so you might have a stacking effect happening ... I suggest testing individual drives with CrystalDiskMark to get a better understanding of their performance ... and take a look at this thread: superuser.com/questions/545157/highest-effective-transfer-rate-on-sata-ii ... especially the part about IDE vs AHCI in the Bios
