    here i am worried and wondering if i sowed my seeds at the perfect depth, while you just poke them around with a plastic plant tag and it seems to work great for you. that is one of the many reasons why i love this channel. it shows that you don't need to overthink things in order to have a beautiful garden.

      I did an experiment is some video years ago. I put a tomato seed 1/4 1/2 and at the bottom of the cell. They all came up just fine. So it eased that worry for me. Right and think nature... most seed just fall on the ground.

    Isnt it just so exciting to be starting seeds again? 😄 So much closer to smelling those tomato seedlings! Last year was my first year to dabble in much more than marigold and zinnia among a few other flowers.. this year I’m winter sowing so many perineal flowers. Saved seed from all the different echinacea plants I put in last spring, butterfly bush, orange and purple milkweed, balloon flower, cannas and a few more! Also many annual flowers. I’m so ready!! Thanks so much for sharing. Although I’m starting mine differently, I still enjoyed this video and the trove of information found here on this channel. Happy sowing and God bless!

    I try to aim for things native to my area (Georgia, the South East) and pay close attention to what bees, butterflies and others like. They really really love Bee balm, Zinneas, mountain mint (great perennial), Tithoniai (Mexican sunflowers) . I've hear good things about Indian blanket so I am giving that one a shot this year. Im doing Coneflowers too. I'm also doing a lot of host plants too for butterflies. That will both bring in the Larvae to make more and bring in the butterflies themselves .

    I have a couple of different types of poppies coming up, along with hollyhocks and wild bergamot inside. Zinnias, marigolds and cone flowers will be next. Broccoli rabe, which I sowed for a co-worker (can't say no to a Jersey Girl Italian) and it's going crazy in less than a week. Balloon milkweed and 5 other flowers I winter sowed. I go for fragrance, dual use (cutting/edible) and pollinators. Found a great shop light at Costco for $30 which is also controlled by a remote. Thank you Gary for all your help. I really couldn't be as good a gardener without your tips. My wife and I are having our annual gardening planning meeting this week. She plants most of the flowers, I work on the raised bed vegetables. Our arguments always center around mulch. She loves it, I hate it. I have seen so many Florida garden sites recommend mulching. Why ? Most recommend pine straw as black gold, but I have found only black mold . Why can't mulch work in raised beds in Florida ? What am I doing wrong ?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So glad to help and mulch.... So depends on the reason. It really does well to conserve moisture and cool soil temps. When the soil temp of your vegetables gets too hot, plants shut down. That is why tomatoes, cukes etc might struggle in your summers. If the top 4-6 inches is drying out fast it impacts the plant. Nicely shredded hardwood or other mulches decay and break down to feed the soil. Mold is a normal process in decomposing organic matter in most part. I use something cold shredded hard which might not be available there. It looks much nicer than straw imo.

    When starting seeds and using a watering tray do I need to take the tray off after water has absorbed into soil if I am using a heating mat underneath or is it okay to leave the tray on the mat? I am using small 6 cell starting and the tray holds 12 so taking them in and out of the tray is time consuming so just curious if it would be okay to leave them in the trays while on the heating mat.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can leave the tray. Just dump out any excess water after like 20 minutes. Mine all stay in the watering flats.

    How do the perrinals seed themselves if you have a thick layer of mulch? Do you have to remove the mulch in spring? Or just mulch heavy before they seed?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you would. They have to get to the soil after they germinate and secure and take off. If the mulch is pretty dense it should be fine. But it dries fast and is too fluffy, the seeds might struggle.

      Both work. Annual flower longer over the summer. Perennial often flower first.

    I appreciate what you are doing Gary and learning a good deal, but...this video wasted alot of time watching you dribble seeds and talking about dribbling seeds. Instead of getting down to this business of how to get the seeds to germinate and the process of growing from seeds, i.e. watering. light. replanting etc. The title of the video is literally how to seed start. I don't need to sit for 15 minutes and watch seeds going into dirt. More language about the PROCESS. Thank you
