As a goalie I never used to wear a neck guard, I hated the damn things and when you changed masks getting them positioned and setup perfectly on the new one was such a pain in the ass I never wore one, until that first neck cut injury, wore one since. Luckily only had one instance where I ever needed it to actually protect my neck, checked it after the game, big scratch across it where a blade had gone across it, I didn't feel it or even knew it had happened but I did know that scratch hadn't been there before the game.

Injuries like these really show just how important the trainers and medical staff are. Zednik has said himself that the trainer, who had some military medical background, saved his like by pinching the artery that was cut. Said it was hanging by a thread.

    • @AD-df5tm
      @AD-df5tm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

I think you are confusing two different stories there. It was the Clint Malarchuk incident where the trainer was a former Vietnam vet (he was a combat engineer not a medical member) and it's said that he reached into Malarchuk's neck to pinch off his jugular but that is just an urban legend. He didn't actually do that. He almost certainly did save Malarchuk's life getting to him so quickly and getting him off the ice though.

I remember when the Clint Malarchuk injury happened. Thankfully he's alive. Scariest injury I've seen in sports. He came out with his own line of neckguards after. A very close second happened in a game I was playing in. I was a goalie and after the whistle in our end, in front of the net one of our defensemen pushed a player on the other team. The player on the other team fell and hit their head on the ice. The guy wasn't wearing his chin strap so his actual head hit the ice cause his helmet came part of the way off. I'll never forget looking down and seeing a pool of blood coming out of his ear. He was rushed to the hospital and I never saw him play again on that specific team.

Jesus, I had completely forgotten about Zednik's injury. "Fun" fact about the incident: Zednik's life was saved by a fan who happened to be a doctor. The guy jumped down from the stands and immediately clamped down on his artery. Zednik was actually conscious enough to ask him if he could loosen his clamp as it was "too tight". The doctor answered "no" and the rest is history.

Wow great video! I was at a game in Ottawa back in 1999 I believe when Marian Hossa clipped Bryan Berard with a stick to the eye. I'm sure you've already been recommended that but if not that's mine. Can't wait to see more

Best react video ever. I was half way expecting a video with stupid comments pointing out the obvious and not really contributing anything to the video. This was actually amazing how much substance you added to the video by explaining the medical side of things. Super intresting

As a hockey player these scare me, but I know how rare some of these are. The fact that the injuries that were in this video happened shows how dangerous a simple game can be with so much gear.

buffalo dude here. my dad goes to probably 2 games a year. was at both the clint malarchuk and zednik game by chance. what is amazing is that for malarchuk the trainer who ran onto the ice was served in vietnam as a combat medic pinched the blood vessel from ice until they got to the hospital. also in zednik's case one of the reason's he was treated so well is that all the on call surgeons at buffalo general were watching the game being close to the playoffs and upon seeing the injury and knowing they are the hospital that he would be arriving at prepped a surgery room for his injury so they could begin as soon as he got there. still find it crazy that malarchuk played a game 10 days later.

The very first time I was re-assembling my 1911 (used but almost brand new), I had the (completely unloaded) barrel pointing toward my face while I was trying to put the barrel bushing back on. Being a basically brand new gun, the recoil spring is under a butt load of tension, and my wrench slipped off the bushing before I could get it turned into the groove. That sucker flew directly back at me and hit my right eyebrow basically exactly where Staal got hit. It hurt so bad, I thought my eye socket shattered. I can't even imagine how bad a hockey puck going, what 100+ MPH, would hurt.

I'd love to watch a breakdown of Kris Draper's Injury after he was hit by Claude Lemieux in 1996.
“I looked up at our trainer and he was blurry, but I could see this look of horror on his face. I’ll never forget that look. He put a towel over my head to hide my injuries. The last thing I remember is him and Keith Primeau helping me to my feet and escorting me off the ice to the dressing room.”
-Draper, who blacked out on his way off the ice, regained consciousness in the locker room and felt the excruciating pain for the first time. Then he blacked out again.
“The next time I came to, I sat up and the pain was gone. I didn’t know it, but I was on some serious painkillers. So I started trying to put on my shoulder pads so I could get back on the ice.”

Would be super interesting to hear your take on guys with recurring concussion issues. Contrasting Crosby, who has come back fine (and maybe better) despite his career looking over (Patrice Bergeron's early-season concussion might also qualify) with someone like a Marc Savard. I assume it's already on the list, but comparing Rich Peverly's cardiac incident with Fischer's would be interesting. Johnny Boychuk almost lost his eye this season from a skate blade, that was gruesome. Maybe even dissecting the fact that Gregory Campbell played a shift of a penalty kill on a literal broken leg, or Bergeron played in the 2013 Cup finals with a punctured lung.
In short, hockey players are dumb and reckless when it comes to their own health, postseason injury reports often read like they went to an actual war.

On the McDavid injury - the net is designed to break away and move in the event of a collision. It’s not perfect, but when it’s hit with significant force it comes off it’s pegs to get out of the way.
In terms of part 2, a couple suggestions - Malarchuk, Travis Roy, Stamkos are the top ones that come to mind.

The AT's did an awesome job with an uncooperative head-injured athlete with suspected spine injury. They reacted just as they have been trained, they supported without restraining. We no longer "immobilize"per se suspected spine injuries, but rather apply "spinal motion restriction". Dr. Sutterer does a great job breaking it down and showing the expertise of the intervention in those circumstances. Perhaps too many well-intentioned personnel on the ice (need max 6), other than that, overall professional care at it's best.
