First time hearing of this piece. Thoroughly enjoyed, it. Definitely Romanian, but at times , the first sections especially, kind of reminded me of composer Carl Nielsen, too. Thanks very much for posting it.
7:34 This 'rising storm' part is classic Ligeti. And to break it with that manic violin versus orchestra dialog, just sheer brilliance. What a brilliant musician I am just in awe.
Didn't believe this was Ligeti even when my mom popped the score up in front of the screen ! Had heard the finer Hamburg concerto but never this rearly 1951? work ! Hanigan has electrified ever since I saw her in Grande Macabre and then caught her conducting it very tricky score .I'll never know how many rehearsals that takes unless the musicians have performed it before many times. She's seriously being taken on asa conductor. She's an intelligent force of nature! Wonderful too that she's bringing new music to da fore !

Is it my imagination or can I hear some of the Romanian folk dances that Bartok used? No matter! It's a thrilling piece and the country is obviously very fertile musically

I can see your point, but...The musicians serm to be revved, the music is engaging and thrilling in some visceral way. I presume there is other music on the program, and I think it's fine to sandwich a light diversion between meatier fare.
Elle n'a pas "la tête enfouie dans la partition" plus que Rattle, Muti, Sinopoli, Chailly et cent autres. Et de toute façon c'est un détail sans importance.

Sure, it is a Romanian classic. (Bartok collected a huge number of folk songs. Field recordings exist)
The oboe solo at 10:38 is one of the most absurd and lovable moments in Ligeti's music, I look forward to it every time I put this piece on.
As a clarinetist I must correct you; it's a clarinet solo, not an oboe solo ;)
