I volunteered with the Special Olympics for 3 years and it's all about the community aspect that Geo talked about. Families get together with other families that can relate with each other and the same goes with the athletes. People with special needs benefit from these events where it's catered to them specifically because they build relationships with others and yes, get a chance to get that ribbon or award. In the real world competing against people without special needs, they might not get anything. Let them have it. As long as you teach them the difference between the two, it's ok.

As parents of a #JahSyndrome child; We have found Most people with DownSyndrome are Kind-Hearted individuals blessed with an extra Chromosome. They are examples of Strong determination & they have an abundance of Love & Forgiveness. Having her in our life is Spiritually Enriching & Humbling.
The participation trophies are fine for Elementary schoolers I think. The best time to transition away from that is when sports actually becomes competitive in the Middle/High school fields. When the kids are moving up between schools they subconsciously recognize that a change is taking place in their lives and thus would be more open to a change in treatment (at least I would think)
