I knew Hector Hoppin personally and he could point to portions of Disney's Fantasia and say, "he got that from Joie de Vivre". I'm so glad the film is now available for everyone to see-- here and in other places on the internet. Hector had no copy of it, but it was shown at New College in Sarasota prior to Hector's death, which gave him an enormous thrill. Much of his artwork was lost during WWII.

Apparently this was based on a series of etchings by Hector Hoppin called Sortie De L'Usine, or exiting the factory, where these women worked, to escape to a joyous woodland idyll. I would not be surprised if the Disney folks were watching this when they made Fantasia. It certainly would be interesting to see more of their work. Thunderbean has released this on a DVD called Strangest Cartoons Ever Made V 1, but I think they exaggerate somewhat as this animation is hardly a cartoon

In my not very modest opinion I say that this is the best animated short film ever made. That's it!

I recall using a clip of this film back in 1977 on a youth programme for London Weekend Television and have been trying to film a full copy of it ever since. Wonderful French surrealist art animation as I ever came across. Thanks for posting this - you've made me very happy.

@bcurran5 Maybe it was Rebecca Black's grandmother and she didn't know which seat to take?

i think the reason they switched places on the bike was because the girl with the black hairs hair would get lost in translation with the mans coat.
