    Hey Ryan! I just wanted to say thanks for sharing this ultrapacer website. I signed up for my first 100 miler a couple months back and have been furiously planning and training. I spent so long wracking my brain to remember where I saw the tool you used and wasn't coming across anything else. This website is going to be an absolute help in training. I've long since given up on gels and now prefer real foods like boiled eggs, dried fruits, small rice packs with anchovies etc. My takeway from this excellent sharing is the ginger candies (which I love, but never brought along on races) and the way you plan your race using ultraPacer -- thats neat! Thanks!

    Great video Ryan! :-) I like prepping bags as you have as I think it also gets you thinking about the race and getting in a positive mindset. If your drop bags are organised, you are organised and it's all under control when you get to a CP as you know exactly what to do and what is in your bag that you need. I also took an idea from one of your other videos to have CPs/distance etc on piece of paper in ziplock so I could keep eye on progress & what was ahead. Now to run a race.....!

    • @RyanClaytonFilms

    One thing I learned from a friend is to add in your nutrition a treat of some sort. Gives you something to look forwards to. I put 100 calorie packs of mini Oreos in the drop bags for my 100K. DNF but those Oreos tasted great.

    This video wasn't boring at all! I only recently got into running a few months ago. Doing my first half marathon this Sunday, then doing a 12k trail run the first week of December. • @Some-Guy-
    @Some-Guy- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    SO HELPFUL! I probably won't have a crew when I start doing ultras after the pandemic, so this is EXACTLY what I need to see. Great production and information density, too!
    Do you have a specific sequence you go through at the dropbag stations? I'll have to pack checklists at the top of the bag because I can be scatterbrained, I'm curious what your checklist would look like.
    Thanks!

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sweet, thank you!!! Good luck to you as you give it a shot without crew. It really was a good experience to go through. I just memorized what i had in each bag, kinda rehearsed beforehand a bit, but most of the aid stations I just filled bottles first, then grabbed some food and drink and tried to get out as soon as I can. After about 50 miles I always sit down for a couple minutes, seems to help me a lot and allows me to run more. The simpler you can keep everything the better. Even though having all this stuff might not seem simple hahah

    I'm really late to this video but thanks for the information. I've ran a few ultras and never thought about using tums. Also I love altra but have never tried the Olympus. Do you ever have ankle rolls with the high stack height? I just ordered a pair. The last ultra my feet were killing me in the LP 4.5s. Thanks for sharing 👍

  • @Michael-hc3ft
    @Michael-hc3ft 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Picked up a few new things from this: ginger candy, Tums, and extra Buffs.. The only thing I carry you didn't mention is a small aluminum trowel and a little paper in a water proof bag in my vest. It's lightweight and if you've ever needed one in the middle of nowhere - you know. I also put an extra headlamp plus extra batteries in the night bag. I know its mental but in the first bag after halfway, I put in a sleeve of fig newtons! One thing that has helped me with the gel burnout is different flavors and different brands in each bag. (Only do this if you have tested them all before).

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome Michael!! So glad it helped. And oh man I guess I forgot to put that in there but I do carry some baby wipes in a little plastic bag!! Fig Newton’s would be great too!

    I'm doing the NB100 2022 in a few weeks, same direction as you did. I have the same dry bags you use, and they are 20 liter size. What size did you use? The manual for the race gives the maximum dimensions as 10"x8"x20", and am not quite sure my 20 liter bags meet the criteria. I have smaller bags, but it's impossible to get size 14 shoes plus extras into them.
    Great video.

  • @rgweaver
    @rgweaver 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Super helpful Ryan! Two questions: 1. What proportion of your calories do you plan to get from your own food vs aid station? Sounds like you plan for nearly all calories with your own food, until things go a little wrong. 2. How many total calories per hour do you target? I managed to get a little over 200 for my first ultra (a 50 mi) and I think maybe it was a little low. But it sounds like that's in your ballpark.

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I always try to plan for using my own nutrition since it’s predictable and controllable, but definitely switch the majority for aid station hot food at some point when I lose interest in my gels and bars. I try to get about 200-300 per hour. A lot can come from your drink mix, so I try to account for that if it’s hot or cold, will change based on that. It’s a moving target and hard to get right!

      I haven’t, mainly because I don’t crave those things during races. My diet is pretty high carb in general so it’s what I’m used to. Could be a fun experiment though!

    What flavors of Spring Energy do you like? I've found only Canaberry, Power Rush, and occasionally Hill Aid to be palatable, actually having to spit out the others. This doesn't include Speednut or Koffee as I haven't tried them yet. I've found the taste of Muir Energy to be more enjoyable (all except Sweet Potato Oregano) and is similarly a healthier alternative to other traditional gel brands.

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like all the spring flavors, but sometimes your palette does weird things during 100 milers. Muir is great but I don’t like how hard it is to get out of the package. Spring is a lot quicker and sometimes you need that. The three flavors you mentioned are my favorite too!
