    From what I know. For a samurai to lose their topknot (chonmage) means losing their honour, they're unworthy to be called a samurai anymore.
    So when Teigen's topknot got cut off, it was a humiliation and his friends left him because they didn't want to associate with him anymore.

    The bend comes from the soft inner core and hard outer shell they showed during the forging scenes in the last episode. When the sword is cooled, the inner core shrinks quicker, drawing the blade up into the curve.

    • @csako2668
      @csako2668 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      The tempering, and bending of the blade is the moment of truth - The swordsmith really doesn't know the severity of the degree the blade will take for certain. Of course, experience helps, still, it's up to the metal, heat, and water, but mostly the skill of the maker to craft the final weapon.

      Mizu is a badass for sure. But I also like how violence is often quick and deadly. Its not a long drawn out sequence. It comes down to the cut. Delivered in the moment. When facing the fangs - Mizu drew out the encounter by forcing individual fights... to her advantage. And even then, it was down to the moment.
      When a fight takes longer than a few seconds... it is truly something unique with rapidly increasing stakes.

      Also, while dispatched quickly, the Fangs still felt like a threat. The first strike the first fang did, almost cut her open, twice. It was really a last second dodge... Guys are no joke.

    Eye, skin, hair color all basically comes down to whose genetics are stronger. Most common beings brown and blue. I come from a family where my parents come from 10 to 12 siblings and I got a rare eye color Hazel the only people in my family besides me to have it is my dad & both of my grandfathers. Beings Hazel people have always asked me if I'm wearing contacts because my eyes have looked Grey, green, honey brown, even amethyst usually based on my clothing bringing out that color more.

    • @TheRubberDuck77
      @TheRubberDuck77 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      And, technically speaking, blue eyes are a mutation, the turn off the iris's ability to produce melanin. It is also recessive therefore for the blue eye samurai to have blue eyes, she would have to have it passed down from both parents, now they don't both have to have blue eyes themselves, but both have to have had them in their family history. But then this is a fictional story so that might not be the case with her.

    • @grimm516
      @grimm516 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @TheRubberDuck77 Yes, that is true but don't forget genetics can get strange what you said is true but alsow the most common for example you can get a situation that causes the blue eye allele to copy twice from one parent and any number of things to happen

    funny thing about honor. A while back I read "Bushido" by Inazo Nitobe and one thing that stuck with me, maybe someone from Japan can confirm this, is that Japanese does not exactly have a word for what we call honor. The closest approximation would be a good name. People, especially young men, would be encouraged to live their home and not return until they make a name for themselves.
    We kind of paired this idea with our sense of honor, and in many aspects it is alike. But it's also different.

    Peaches don’t surprise me as much because they are fairly common in media and have been for a long time, the hotdogs were a surprise. It makes sense since nudity in Japan is very different. They have separated sexuality and nudity. There is nothing sexual about taking your clothes off, running down a pier, and jumping in fringed waters naked with a bunch of other people. Most public bathhouses in Japan were not segregated by gender. And with paper walls you learned at a very young age what the human body looked like and also how to be blind to things you may see.

    I think honor (or pride) can be a fickle thing and for some people, usually men but not exclusively, losing it can supersede everything else to the point of stupidity. Logic, reason, and even love get eclipsed by the need to retain it. Even scoundrels and thieves have some semblance of honor, code, or respect. It can be a virtue but like any virtue if done to excess it become a vice. Sometimes honor does need to be restored but in its pursuit other virtues should not be lost, ignored, or forgotten.

    • @TukaihaHithlec
      @TukaihaHithlec 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Historically, cultures upholding these notions of things like honor, respect, greatness, etc are anything but. They’re excuses disguised as some higher ideal. This show and shows like Avatar: TLA and Legend of Korra and some other Netflix and Amazon animated shows are not really anime, per se. They are strongly influenced by anime but they are not Japanese productions. I didn't thnk these guys would be around all that long. Once they started to get sliced up, I figured they'd be dealt with. They didn't eve give a speech like Kurn did in Firefly's "The Train Job". Now there I was totally dumbstruck when he got take out.

    Quick note from the intro: 4 white men in Japan and the Four Fangs might be because of the trope "Four is Death" for Eastern Media

      @@Matuse I loved episode 5 too but I spent that entire episode wondering if the flashbacks were really flashbacks or just like an alternate "what if". So when it turned out to be real, it was episode 7 and I didn't want to go back.

    This is sort of a left over comment that I didn't get around to making on the first video, but you can't use any kind of modern moral standard regarding sex and relationships when you're dealing with feudal Japan. For example, they didn't have the concept of sexual orientation. People just liked whatever they liked, and literally nobody cared or thought it odd. Further, whatever you did sexually, didn't carry over into areas of life outside sex. So, if somebody was into freaky shit, but then was a respectable lord at other times, people viewed those things as completely different and disconnected from each other. People didn't kneel before their lord thinking, "I heard this dude got up to some weird shit at the whorehouse." They simply didn't care, because sex is sex and its an entirely separate realm.
    Prostitution was considered normal, and despite what the show suggests, was often preferred by women as a career, offering a much better life than working on a farm. Many prostitutes were considered celebrities and they commanded a great deal of respect from all social classes. Higher end prostitutes in Japan would have been like Inara from the show, "Firefly." If Akemi had walked in on Taigen partying with friends and hookers in the first episode, she literally would not have cared or been bothered in the least. The show presented things the way it did because it knows how modern, western eyes will look at the situation, and the writers are trying to trick us into disliking his character for a bit.
    It's also worth noting that the traditional, patriarchal structure of Japan did not extend into the area of sexual activity. Women were considered equals in the area of sex, and were able to pursue their interests and desires freely, so long as it didn't leak into the non-sexual world and bring shame to their family or clan. Women would also often procure additional partners to spice up the bedroom with their husband, or simply to give him someone else to bother if they were busy. Some of these arrangements would last for an evening, while others might become long-term or even permanent.
    The characters in the show...or at least the culture they represent...were far happier, more creative, more fulfilled, better adjusted and significantly freakier than literally anyone alive today, so judging them or their behavior with our flawed, puritanical and frankly miserable moralistic superiority is both nonsensical and preposterous.
