We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.
We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.

Don't connect your 240V AC earth to the van chassis, most vehicles use the chassis as the 12V DC negative, all it would take is one AC device being plugged in with an earth leakage and your van's DC system could get fried. Talk to Fred about this, he will know.
ground?
Well done with the electrics guys, but remember that Fred was with you every step of the way because he taught you!
Lembrei do Fred agora.
Roberta, Duca, a note, after working in a very corrosive mining environment. We used cable hose similar to what you used, BUT, silicone dialectric grease on all terminations. This way the terminations would remain clean and easily worked on.
Calcium chloride, one metric ton per roughly 9,000 ltr., was used in the mine water to prevent freezing in the lines, above the 590 m level in the mine, thermocline, below was above freezing.
Best wishes from Northern Canada.
Finally, Duca finally has Sikaflex on his fingers again. 😂✌😎
😁
Wow, great paradigm shift… use the back side for some of the wire run. Super time consuming, but great out-of-box thinking. 😀
☺️
As soon as i saw that the Xantrex logo was on its side a warning bell went off about whether the unit could be mounted in that orientation so i downloaded the manual and, yes, you got it right. Looking at the unit the natural idea would be to mount it with the logo horizontal. It seems counter intuitive to mount it in a way that looks to be ‘on its side’. I wonder how many people have mounted it incorrectly…
Great content guys…
DUCA WHEN YOU FORGET OR DON'T SAY IT RIGHT IT IS SO GREAT THAT YOU HAVE THE ONE AND ONLY ROBERTA TO HELP AND CORRECT YOU!!!..SHE IS SUCH A GREAT PARTNER ...PLEASE TAKE CARE OF HER ..❤🎉😮😊
🥰
At least on the van galvanic corrosion wont be an issue, great update 2x👍
I love how much both of your English speaking abilities have improved year by year. Also Duca something tells me your friend Fred, who taught you electrical work must be very proud of how well you work with electrical wiring and understanding now !!
🥰
I LOVE your attention to detail!! When you get your new boat finished and sell the van, someone will be getting a well-planned and well-executed vehicle! Well done . . . as usual!!
☺️🥰
Remember to leave the yellow/green wire longest when installing 240V plugs . So if there is pulling force it is last to stay on.
Where the conduit passes through metal, use a grommet in the hole as well as the conduit so any motion is rubber on plastic not metal on conduit.
Thanks for the suggestion. We put some wool insulation ☺️
The safest 240 connection to the van is via an isolating transformer... Just like on a construction site when you operate power tools...Very nice instillation...
Your hatchings (baby) is growing fast. Be seen him/her soon.
🥰
You are a very proficient worker. Slow but very conscientious . Good luck to you both!!
☺️
Looking Great Roberta! So excited for both of you to have this baby. How exciting. I miss those days intensely. While its difficult often, enjoy the journey of having and being with your child.
🥰
Well planned, lncredible Grid Tie and off grid capabilities! It really fits in a tight space!
☺️
It's important to keep the equipment positioned correctly for two main reasons:
Easy Access: When the LCD monitor is in the right position, it's easier to read and change the settings.
Proper Natural Ventilation: The equipment has mesh openings on the top and bottom to let warm air escape. Warm air naturally rises, so it's important not to block these openings. This allows the warm air to leave the enclosure without needing a fan. In short, to avoid overheating, make sure there are no obstacles blocking the warm air from escaping.
🥰
I am so very proud of you 2, you both have gone so far very impressive ❤❤😀😀👍
💕
Hi Duca, really nice job with the cabling. Make sure to mount breakers on both wires blue and brown (a double FI would be best). You never know, whether the cabling on 230V coming to your van is done right. We once had power on the blue (normally neutral) wire. Only like that you are completely safe.
Good Job!!! You are on the way to meet your objective.
Also, for the girls you need to tell us about Roberta and how she is doing with the pregnancy?
We enjoy your video every Sunday.
Raul and Joan, Bryan, Texas
☺️ we are doing great 🥰
Very nicely done.👍⛵️PS you do know you can pull cables through conduits with a shop vac -just tie a piece of plastic bag around the cable tightly feed in one end and suck at the other.😉👍⛵️
😉
It looks as though it is going be more of a palace than a mobile home - container home on steroids!
😁
☺️🥰😘
Bootlace bootlace bootlace well done Duca. Please explain why use bootlace.good job.
I hope you have an infrared camera or phone attachment to check for hotspots on the installation. So nice for you to remember Fred's kind teaching and be able to do the work yourself know, next you will have to learn more so you can train someone. It's such a privilege to be able to pass on skills.
☺️ obrigada
great job!
Thanks ☺️
Good job. Go ahead!
Thanks ☺️
I admire you both so much with the work you do and your approach to life. Thank you for the inspiration. I am picking up lots of good tips and tricks for my boat along the way..!! ❤
💕
FINALLY, on my tablet, Buffer Free via TH-cam! It is still buffering on Patreon. I will see next week! FANTASTIC video! Do you know how hard it is to draw your diagram in warp speed? 🤣🤣 Of course after I watched it through again on a big screen, I re-watched it and did all the stop/backup/play/stop... to get it all down. I'm pretty sure I followed everything correctly so far. On my sailboat, I did not have a separate shore power Inverter (well, not one that big. And my On/Off switch had 3 options. 1st, Off, 2nd, just house bank, 3rd. motor battery (once motor battery was charged up after cranking and using, the motor recharged that battery and once that was fun it would also go over to the house battery. I'm putting my bank in my shed with panels on top. Where I have to place it is the best advantage of the sun considering the movement of the earth and My Neighbors Really Tall Trees!!! I just got a new roof put on (re shinglled) wow at the new way of doing this. No more felt paper. It's 2 type of rubber material and asphalt running where there are 2 different pitches under the rubber with 50 yr warranty on the shingles!!! I'll be dead, LOL 🤣🤣🤣 Well I asked the 8nstallers about Solar panels and where the panels are placed anywhere on the roof, they would not be warranty and my Insurance Company would increase my Yearly (monthly) Insurance!!! Ok I'll shut up. FANTASTIC VIDEO! GREAT JOB ON THE CONTROLLER BOARD!!! ✝️🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤🇺🇸🇧🇷⛵👣👣👣👣🐟🐡🍍☘🤗
💕💕
Nice to see you have fitted your fire bomb in your van, just hope it will not go off.
Awesome installation!
Thanks ☺️
Well done with the electrics guy's. You have done your usual perfect and thought through instalation. Keep well and safe. James.
☺️
Nice neat job
☺️
You guys doing a great job not bad for a first timer hope to see you next week love you guys
Thanks 🥰
As always, when you do something, you always do it the right way and explain why you did it that way. An inspiration to watch. All the best to the both of you from "The big guy". :-)
💕💕
Very cool!
☺️☺️
Looking good. I love DC electrical systems.
🥰
Love you guys! I'm lost, but it looks great. Be well. ❤
😁💕
An engineer's eye!
☺️
No boat yoga this time. So organized and neat. Be well!
😁
Impresionante

🥰 O Fred a a Ju ainda tão no Guarujá.
👍
☺️
D&R, I’m a bit concerned about that insulation material. Does it have a fire rating? Can it resist electric arc/spark? Will you have some fire extinguishers aboard? Saluti.
Sheep’s wool insulation isn’t flammable, and it’s naturally fire resistant up to temperatures of 1,040°F (560°C). Sheep’s wool is a good insulation choice because it’s safe to handle and resistant to fire. Additionally, sheep’s wool resists mold, dampens sound, and is highly durable. All the wires are protected with the conduits and they are not touching the wool
Yes, we are gonna have a fire extinguishers
@@OddLifeCraftingAh... I didn't realize wool had such properties. Thought it was cotton or synthetic. Congrats on finding it! 😎👍.
Xantrex is the best !
No Really.
How's the boat build going ??
How is Fred doing? Done with his bost?
He is great. Finishing his boat
I think you need double pole breakers for 230v in France, might be an issue when you come to get the van homologated.
I am from Belgium. As far as i know France has no problem with monopolar breakers
@@francisverhelst9375 It is compulsory on French 230v domestic systems, whether they will insist on a van with mains hookup, I don't know.
How is Fred and his wife. We miss them.
They are great ☺️
What about battery ventilation?
As we said it’s a provisory cover to use until we build the furniture, once we build the furniture it’s gonna have ventilation
Hey Ducca is the system is 12V or 24v ?
all looks pretty good just a observation if the system is 12v i believe the battery cables are too thinner it may get hot too easy and it will be keep blowing the fuses
i had similar set up in the past and was changing the mega fuse at least every month!
Hi, Andre. We actually ran all the calculations and it's correct according to our needs and the inverter we have. Thanks for the heads up
I like the results but I'm wondering Why you don't use the space behind the frame, instead of the insulation.
It sure would have been harder to work with but save a lot of space.
It would be really messy to install inside as there are a lot of structural metal parts of the van inside. It would be much more complicated and hard for maintenance. 😅
@@OddLifeCrafting Makes perfectly sense! The space you save won't be enough to justify a more complex installation and harder maintenance!
And let cables and metal sharp angles rub together even if you're using conduit is not the best idea!
How is Fred ? 😮
Great ☺️
Insulation rule? Fluff, don't stuff. Blessings.
☺️
Do you guys have names for the new crew member?
Oli 🥰
Fred
😁
Garbage chargers. You will see
We had the same for 4 years in our boat and we never had any problems
As a retired electrician and electronics tech, I am appalled that you neglected to put a connector in the 1/2" knockouts in the inverter/charger. Very bad practice. Of coarse you don't have the background so just fix it.
Hi, Larry. Thanks for the suggestion. To be honest we never thought about it (I, Roberta, didn't know it even exists, hehe). The installation is very tight and there is no way the wires are gonna touch the area around. We always follow the manual of the electric and electronics and they never comment about using it. But if I feel like it's necessary to put one we can always add it.
