I think the costumes are supposed to represent who they want to be, and when she says "what costume" she means that she is apart of that costume or who that costume represents. Cat mask girl saw right through it
Not wanting to be vulnerable, hence the costume she didn't even realize was a costume and not wanting it off for that reason. She watches the other person's TV cause it's a life she can't have (or doesn't think she deserves to have), so when she finally does open up and let herself have happiness, she's paying no mind to the TV at all.
it seems like the « costume » could be symbolizing internalized homophobia . it being a devil costume n the incorporation of church seems like a very literal portrayal of the demonization of queer people being done through the veil of religion . like you mentioned, she believed it wasn’t even a costume . possibly, believing she truly was a sinner for being queer . the only time her and the other girl are seen without heir costumes is at the end, when they’re alone with each other . my guess is this is showing acceptance and comfort . realizing there’s nothing sinful about being queer, because the other girl showed her that . like we see at the beginning, she mentions this girl in the confessional . which seems to hit the idea of her believing her queerness to be unholy home
I dont think he was trying to fight her, only show her that there is more and she doesn't have to hide, Satan isn't evil in this depiction, just a being of "tough love"
so I guess.. she was trying to be someone she wasn't, she wanted to be dark and edgy. But the cat mask girl saw through it, and so the demon-girl went to summon satan to prove to herself that she was who she was pretending to be. But it did not turn out well, she found out being dark and edgy is not cool and a destructive way of thinking. Then they both realized that they don't have to put on a persona with each other. And they watch their neighbors television to avoid paying for cable.
@@SynSynError i totally agree that the art is something that we should be appreciating more in here but i think its really cool to see other people commenting abt what they think is the meaning of the video or sharing their thoughts in general, because the hole "deep meaning" is also a part of the video and its something that the creator wanted to share. I think this one is about how religious guilt makes you nervous to enter relationships because you feel like you’re a bad person for wanting to be loved and comforted
I don't actually see this as religious at all. The costume is just the everyday "mask" everyone wears, and the fact that he see's she's beautiful even though it's dark and that he acknowledges that she is wearing a costumes = he sees her for who she really is. ...but she needs to face her demons in order to be able to show her true self, with all the wounds of the past that we usually cover up. So she can be sure he likes the real her.
At the beginning, they're both wearing costumes, and while both friends can tell that the other is wearing one, they are in denial about it. In the middle of the video, she tries to become what her costume represents, but it hurts herself in the process. By the end of the video, they are both glancing at a normal life through the glass, and decide to take off their costumes and go to bed, perhaps because they were tired of pretending. Thats just my interpretation. Would love to hear what others think.

I think this video is about sexuality, and a girl growing up in a religious background coming to terms that she might be a lesbian? They are both wearing costumes at the beginning, trying to deny their sexuality, with the devil girl going to confession for feeling this way. The devil costume might also represent how she is different from what the church believes (only heterosexual relationships) because the devil is the opposite of God and 'goodness'. The girl wearing the mask tries to reveal her true self, and devil girl has obviously not come to terms with her feelings and tries to change herself with a demon summoning ritual that just hurts her in the process. This could represent trying to forcefully change herself and her feelings towards this masked girl. In the end they both come to terms with their sexuality.
I always love how everyone has their own meaning to things like this, from sexuality to relationships and all the religion mixed in. Its so interesting and cool! :D
That muffled golden girls reminds me of being at my grandma's house when I was little all the time. And golden girls would always be going in the living room until like 2 in the morning lol
I think this is about the shame people often get when bonding with others? The devil costume is supposed to represent how she sees herself (she even asks the character what costume she(?) is talking about, meaning she sees herself as a devil), and the church/Christian imagery represents the main character's repressed feelings, disconnect from society (it's a devil in a church, and her confession was that she met someone new) and her feeling like she's inadequate. When the other character takes off part of the costume, she feels good but embarrassed. Her shame sends her to church, where pricks her finger and uses the blood as a tear for one of the statues. She later goes home to perform a Satanic ritual where she pricks her finger again and hallucinates(?) Satan. I think this represents her guilt of falling in love (with a girl I think because that's what we see at the end but this can apply to heterosexual love too especially with the Christian imagery and diehard Christian's stigma around love/sexuality) and how she thinks she's going to hell. We later see that her eye is injured, which I interpret as her succumbing to her sexuality but idk?? She and the other girl(?) smile at each other and at the end it's implied they made love, so that's how I came to thst conclusion. Anyways rant over, please tell me what you think because I love getting the meaning out of these
I like your interpretation, but i'd like to add some details. Whilst she is only wearing devils costume (and thinks it's her true nature) she later encounters with the real devil and pays a price: her eye. Probably she turns a blind eye on something. What for? She seems very lonely and antisocial, she is ready to make a deal with the devil to find someone. It's not going well, her date looks like hell: aggressive red color, loud disturbing music. They don't speak much, she even pushes this person away. She's not ready to open up and take off that devil costume. But in the end, it appears her date is just a regular person hiding behind a mask (an antisocial person too). Can't explain the name Catscape though.
I already left this comment, but I'll copy and paste here.
@@MonkeyMan01 I think this is a great interpretation! I also saw that it looks like a journey of trying to fake being something failing to becoming it and finally accepting one's self, I honestly believe yours is spot on
It seems (to me) that the fears, guilt (represented by the holy figures) and beliefs of your inner self don't let you show who you really are, like if you are wearing a costume but you dont really notice it until someone else, who by the way is in the same position as you, makes you question whether you are who you think you are or not. To find out that it takes some screw it up, but then when you are all naked from what prevents you from being free it's finally time to rest on it a bit and start fresh new. On the other hand it could've actually been her own reflection all along because there was nobody at home or the diner where "they" ate. The misfortunes of loneliness ? 🤔
I’m so happy that this had a wholesome ending. In agreement with the most-popular theory down below, I truly believe that these two are homosexual, battling with the religious mindsets ingrained within them in order to pursue themselves, their interests, and who they authentically are. No matter the cost. No matter the malice and judgement they may face. They still have eachother, whether they are friends or partners, and that is enough. Wonderful work, vewn. I really hope we can see you again soon.

Cat(e)scape, because the animation is about escapism?(привет, славяне.)
Catscape= can't escape
@@Meexe-p1z that actually makes so much sense! I was confused about what Satan could symbolize here tbh
@Al X. Andra that makes sense too
God I always luv ur animations so much, the colours, the style, literally everything, pls never stop showing us ur wonderful work
I remember when this was 9 hours old, and it felt like I just watched this a month ago, time goes by fast-
I'll just wait here for the person who explains what the whole video means
Same
Art same x2
actually the same
I already left this comment, but I'll copy and paste here.
@@MonkeyMan01 I think this is a great interpretation! I also saw that it looks like a journey of trying to fake being something failing to becoming it and finally accepting one's self, I honestly believe yours is spot on
Bro, I need to see more content from this person, really, this is my new drug
They have Instagram.

lins how are y’all So smart
You got it right; this is a story about coming out
This was so beautiful at atmospheric, super awesome work
This was surprisingly wholesome
I want to know the creative process behind this

We want a behind the scenes video?
satan
You don’t get to “understand” vewn’s animations man, you get to _feel_
my comfort video tbh
I’m so happy that this had a wholesome ending.
In agreement with the most-popular theory down below, I truly believe that these two are homosexual, battling with the religious mindsets ingrained within them in order to pursue themselves, their interests, and who they authentically are. No matter the cost. No matter the malice and judgement they may face. They still have eachother, whether they are friends or partners, and that is enough.
Wonderful work, vewn. I really hope we can see you again soon.
im sure the mask guy is a boy and devil character is a girl
@@timmycu you can see in the end that they’re both girls

Me clicking agressively: WHY HAVEN`T I SEEN IT YET
*video is mysterious, artful, thought provoking and amazing*
me and my small brain:
Me @ the end: *THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRRIIIIEEEEEND*
I'm amazed at how much atmosphere you crammed into this thing. Everything from the sound design, to the backgrounds, to the uncannyness of the different moments. Excellent.
Absolutely amazing yet again, I'll have to think thoroughly about the meaning of that ending ;)
Holy shit, another vewn! Love your stuff so much!
Bing Bong Thank you, Albert Einstein. Hopefully Vewn sees this and appreciates you returning from the dead to spread gratitude.
these videos are so nostalgic and soothing for me, sound effects are just amazing. great great job
0:59 this is a really cool video but why is the sun right outside the diner im worried
Hiphyro if you go back to 0:54 you will see that it is actually the moon
succc that just leads to another question
WHY IS THE MOON THAT BRIGHT HOLY FRICK
Its a harsh and uncomfortable environment. Social situations can be like that sometimes...
Monkey Man I suppose that makes sense
because it looks really cool!
Your style and aesthetic is sumthin' else; always really captivating, and the plots and narratives are subtle and thick, many underlying things going on at the same time, very nuanced too. Like watching a contemporary underground feature-length animated film at a film festival, but condensed to 3 minutes
These videos are hecking insane
in a good way

wow I love your animations so much and seeing that you've uploaded always makes my day. your art is amazing. I hope you continue making these beautiful videos :)
What if we took off our costumes and kissed ❤️ (and we're both girls) 😳😘

God I wish I could hand you the budget to make a full scale movie your animation style is beautiful
I recognized what was on the tv almost instantly, my grandma watches Golden Girls every night
I have all seven seasons on DVD 😂 I watched it with my mother and grandmother as a kiddo and never lost my love for it. Plus it was so progressive for its time! Heck, even now, it's pretty forward-thinking. Bea Arthur (Dorothy Zbornak) was a huge LGBT+ activist in life, and even has a homeless shelter for LGBT+ folk named in her honour.
Your animations are some of the best. I cant wait for your next video. Seriously my favorite past-time. I can watch these over and over again forever.
omfg why would satan hurt one of his followers this hurts my feelings
He's fucking Satan dumbo
Sonia Alanis I love that you censored “god”

Her animations for some reason are very beautiful to me. It reminds me of my childhood a lot. I was drawing a lot as a kid and had a very similar art style. This is my favourite animation she made. Love you vewn
