  • Keith Cooper gives an overview of colour management for photographers. It can influence every aspect of photography, from the camera to the print, but what parts are vital and what parts just nice to have.
    There are hundreds of reviews and articles on the Northlight Images web site. A good starting point is Keith's article about how printing (and colour management) can improve your photography.

    Keith's videos are so professional and has that charming family home like feeling where it's very welcoming. Anytime I need to look up something that Keith may cover I always type his name after what I'm looking for like "printer keith" I even recommended this channel to my friends. These videos are just so genuine and perfect everytime!

    Keith, your videos are fantastic! Effectively and realistically addressing so many areas of photography, printing, and color has been super helpful. I'm happy to have stumbled upon your channel! Selecting a proper monitor has my brain twisted. In what scenarios do you suggest stepping up to monitors utilizing hardware calibration vs software calibration? For instance, BenQ SW series vs PD series. The cost difference can be quite a leap. Perhaps this is a topic for another video.

      Thank you - yes I'll see what I can come up with. If I'm confident it's set up well, I can edit on a much lower end monitor.
      For myself it comes when I'm relying on the quality of the monitor for my work - if you're a working photographer and using a cheap monitor, it maybe suggests quite a few things... ;-)

    Hi Keith. Love your videos thank you for making the time to educate us. I have a canon pro 300 and when printing images on pro platinum paper and applying that icc profile it is turning skin colour yellow/green tint. Can you explain what I need to do to fix that please.

      Glad they are of help!
      First up, print a known good test image to isolate the problem. I've loads on the Northlight site, some include people.
      If the colour comes out wrong, it's a profile/printer/settings issue
      If the test print looks good, it's more likely monitor calibration issue
      Not always conclusive, but always test such problems with a known good image no matter how confident you are in your own... ;-)

    Hi Keith,
    I find great interest in your videos as you've made me give up an idea of buying a photo printer which actually was an unreasonable concept. With your shared knowledge I can buy it later with consciousness and knowing when I'll be ready for it. Thanks a lot!
    Now I'd like to ask you about colour management. I've got a similar Benq monitor and I'm calibrating it in sRGB as I'm still using my pictures only for Internet use. I can clearly see the difference in daily use between sRGB and AdobeRGB but since my pictures are for Internet purposes should I keep it in sRGB or Adobe?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it was of interest (ah, you can see that I don't sell printers ;-) )
      For web use I work in A98 and then save as sRGB for web, BUT that's because I may want the option of printing. If I was only doing web work I'd probably go for an sRGB workflow. Even so I still prefer editing in a bigger space - there is more 'room' for editing - I do sometimes use ProPhoto, but that needs care.

    • @dinosaur911
      @dinosaur911 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KeithCooper Well, I've used AdobeRGB for general use and then saved images as sRGB for web but it concerned me that the image I was working on looked different after exporting to sRGB file which usually presented significantly worse.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dinosaur911 Ah, I don't very often use the monitor set at anything other than A98 - I just work in whatever space suits the job at hand.
      All my applications are fully colour managed, so whilst I can see the reduced gamut of an sRGB image, it's not that often that my images push the limits. Note that's only 'normal' photos, not anything like graphics, where other considerations can impinge (lets not even start on the perils of CMYK ;-) )
      If I was using any non colour managed software, I might consider changing the monitor setting. The only example for me, is editing videos with Resolve, where I set the monitor to REC709, without switching the monitor profile on my Mac

  • @rogerwalton8160
    @rogerwalton8160 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use the i1 device with Palette Master Software to set-up a hardware profile for my BenQ monitor. Should I also do an X-rite profile as well?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it serves no real use - the PME software does the hardware calibration and produces a profile for the system to use.
      Unfortunately, the PME software won't work with other monitors, so in the example in the video, I used i1Profiler for the attached MacBook Pro and PME for the SW321C
      If you use multiple calibrations, you will need a profile for each of them. As far as I know, switching calibration mode on the monitor is not picked up anywhere else, so a manual switch is required. The only time you might not switch the profile is for some specific uses of the monitor setting - I use REC709 for example when editing video with Resolve on my Mac

    I’ve watched a lot of these videos and I feel like maybe I’m missing something: I’m using a Canon Prograf-300 and MacBook Pro printing primarily black and white. By printing a profile or color profile on paper, where are the steps in adjusting my screen to reflect the paper (especially since I should not be comparing the print to the screen?) Is there a standard of luminance and other settings that would give a great start running a Pro-300 and MacBook? I suppose I’m confused what using profile prints is in relation to how I would get my prints to reflect my screen. I have a background in darkroom printing and am new to understanding digital printing. Thank you for any help

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't really adjust screens to reflect the paper
      You use a calibrator and ideally set it to a known luminance. However, the main problems with most laptops is that moving your head changes display contrast ;-)
      Have a read of some of the actual articles - the videos are generally supplemental to my main articles:

      Feel free to drop me an email at Northlight - people's questions are often what give me ideas for new videos

    Hi Keith
    I am considering buying a Canon pro 300 printer but noticed a shortage of ink supplies and printers too. Is there a reason for this apart from COVID which seems to be blamed for everything these days. Thanks. Love your Channel.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the UK I had a word with someone at Canon about this (since I tried to get some ink and discovered how bad it was) There are essentially two reasons: covid and brexit. Lots of things have combined together to disrupt supply chains. I'm hoping the effect on ink supplies should ease within weeks - not much help, but it is a real shortage. I've had to put off some more testing I was going to do

      great videos Keith,, very informative
      actually EIZO make nice monitors,, only drawback with that stupid little calibration module is,, it measures the outside edge of the screen ,, not the sweetspot in the middle ,, X-Rite i1 all the way,, although I have this equipment in my print studio, as I run a closed lupe work flow, where every media has bespoke icc profiles ,, all monitors and scanners are calibrated regularly and pfuffing in controlled lighting,, occasionally I will do illumination offset profiles,, for a few customers,,
