As someone who actually works in academia for a living, the term dark academia always makes me chuckle, because my colleagues are some of the least fashionable people you will ever meet in your life. But, I'm glad to see people outside the hallways of academia are embracing the aesthetic; It reminds me of the way my dad used to dress in the 80's, with his little elbow-patch blazers and round John Lenon style glasses.
Absolutely agree with this haha Fellow academic here - I can attest we're all just wear the same, old clothes over and over again, clothing is genuinely such an afterthought when we spend most of our time trying to juggle work, responsibilities and any semblance of life. I also find it rather funny that it's somewhat fashioned after the film/ media portrayal of 'old' universities. As a researcher in a traditional, old university in the UK, no one, barely even undergrads, dress like this! haha
Haha yes! I'm also an academic and my word, most academics do not have ANY style. I personally love the dark academia look and will be rockin' it this winter 😎😎
I feel like you'd be good as a personal stylist for folks because you could help them shop their own closets, be supportive of people at any size, and help folks thrift.
I think it would be fun for you to do a video where you take some pieces you “like” to the tailor and see if they can be transformed into pieces you “love”. I would be interested in the process and the outcome.
@@CarrieDayton yes! I love this idea - also, it would be cool to hear about the logistical aspects of using a tailor because I have wanted to tailor some of my clothes for awhile but I'm shit at social interaction and get stressed at the idea of going to a tailor... how do you explain what you want? do you wear the clothes for them? what if they can't do what you're asking for? the anxiety haunts me 🙈
@@triceratops_10 usually putting the item on and showing them how you want it to fit works best. And a good tailor will explain what they can/can't do to make that happen, and show you your options, if there's more than one. Sometimes it'll be a situation where they could take in one seam and make it look better at minimal cost or do a number of more costly and complicated things to achieve perfection...and you will decide how to move forward.
I actually think I prefer watching these videos with clothes you already own because there isn't the temptation for me of wanting to go buy everything! I seriously loved all of the outfits!
I'm an academic librarian and I sometimes dress dark academia (usually I just dress regular academia lol) so I'm here for this video. Also, you're such a fashion chameleon! You can literally wear any aesthetic
omg I can't !!! THAT ROOM IS EVERYTHING!!! also flippin' loved all your outfits 💕 also ive had similar docs to the ones you got and am STILL breaking them in a year later haha
Besides being a 40 year old mum who´s totally into the dark academia, I just gotta say; this make-up, the eyeliner and the entire styling besides the clothing, is SO gooood on you! I dont know what it is but it just suits you so well!
Carrie, in the hot desert, wearing a sweater and a blazer, "I'm extremely hot in this moment." Me, in an island in New England, on a cold rainy Sunday night---oh! These all look like things I could actually wear now that it's warming up.
I would love to see you style outfits for hot weather. I just moved to Florida, and don't know how to style cute outfits with shorts. I feel like I'm always just looking like I'm running to a cookout, not going on a nice date
My only complaint about the dark academia aesthetic is that it’s very much a fall and winter look...and I live in a hot and humid climate. I love it, but they don’t work well together
Yes! So excited for this video! This is my aestethic and I only found out since last year, but it makes me so happy dressing like this. I'm prenursing so I have to study a ton and this style makes me feel comfortable but put together.
Good job! I love these "core" videos soooo much. My crazy suggestion is "DIY" around the house core. 😃😄😅 What would you wear to paint, or build shelves, or work on your yard, take care of your plants, or decorate some new plant pots. I can just picture you in a coverall holding a drill. 😁
I think you could really elevate these videos by taking the extra step to edit those “bones” as you are assessing each outfit (ie. removing the collar, switching out the cropped pant, etc).. also if you switched up the location for each outfit (especially when the room matches the theme), for example lounging on the bed, sitting at the desk, grabbing books off the shelves.
Very inspirational. This is difficult for me to pull off in the Mojave desert, since the look is based on rainy cold weather in England. I can visualize at least 12 more outfits using the same pieces in a different arrangement. If you keep 'tone' in mind the outfits will come together more completely. In other words wear muted colors with muted colors and cool colors with cool colors and warm colors with warm colors. I believe the collar in the first blouse is a shawl collar if people need the terminology for Thread up or something. Knee hi's with the school girl outfit would be fun. I'm new here. I can't wait to explore all your other videos.
Since you mentioned your problems with H&M and now that you're trying to shop more sustainably, could you do a videos on brands that you do and don't shop at and your reasons why? I thought H&M was an okay brand but it's sad to hear you say they're greenwashing hardcore :(
I think this might be my favorite of all your videos! It kind of makes me want to like pick a style a week or something and use my wardrobe to the fullest
Yessss, I'm so into this aesthetic for fall but as a size 18 I'm not finding a lot of size representation like you said. I actually work at my local public library and I'm really wanting like an androgynous dark academia vibe for my work wardrobe. Thank you for the ideas! 🤎🖤🧡
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG! ever since you did the room makeover and mentioned your partner plays dnd I was like OH HELLO BOTH MY INTERESTS lmao
Okay….so I’m late to the comment game…but goooodness do you look incredible!! I love the pieces you featured & think the fits are lovely (favs are 1 & 5!) the representation of mid-plus size in academia style is so so appreciated, 10/10😍
I think style challenges serious and fun would be a great direction for your channel. Because that way don't have to keep buying new clothes. I dont own much clothes cause cant afford much. But its fun seeing these different styles and feel like might want to try something new or think about pairing items in different ways. Plus I can tell feel happier being creative with what you have vs buying more. :)
Genuinely, the thing I love most about the dark academia style is that it lets me live my Hogwarts fantasy 🤣 outfit 2 and 3 were definite Ravenclaw and Gryffindor vibes 💙❤️
I love this video! Probably one of my favorites you've ever made. You're a queen. I can imagine that the audio in the sit-down portions of the video are filmed close to an AC and there are some good options for getting rid of that background sound! ProTools, Adobe Audition and a lot of other audio programs have awesome plugins to make things sound better.
target has a pleated trouser online and instore right now with a stretch waist in the back. comes in straight and plus! love to see you try it. also i’ve seen the way to not getting bunching in a french tuck sweater is to wear panty hose underneath or spanx and tuck it into that.
not really into the DA theme for myself, since I went to private all girl high school and it gives me icky flashbacks! but its true about not having to think of what to wear. I wore a pair of docs like yours! it was definitely not cool in the early 2000's haha! you rocked all the looks as usual 💕
I think a lot of the places where this is popular it's cooler. Like England. Haha. I live in Northern British Columbia Canada so I still need a sweater in the morning and evening. But during the day it's getting nicer. So I could still get away wearing a lot of these outfits. Especially at night. But once it gets warmer I'd die lol
Luckily I work in a place with a very strong air conditioning so it's very cold in summer... when I go out... i just.... yea dont wear my usual style since it's not working for summer 😭
These kinds of videos are giving me life!! Love the first and last outfits so much... but also that burgundy sweater... too bad you live in Arizona Professor Carrie!

Can you do a dark academia / goth outfits... but make it summer appropriate 🙏🏻
Yessss cannot find enough dark summer midsize outfits!!
Yes yes yes!!!

@@alexasunshine83 I thought it was you lol!!! Thx for the blazer that started the inspo for this whole video 🖤
YOU LOOK SO SO GOOD IN ALL OF THESE OUTFITS. Carrie Dayton in dark academia is my new favorite thing. Like, wow, my new woman crush. no doubt.
I love that room so much, you should film in there more often!
As a 15 year old who's been watching for a couple of years, I cannot express how excited I am for this video!! Thanks for the inspo Carrie :)

Okay but your outfit and HAIR in the intro!!! 😍✨

That's why we have cottagecore and light academia looks 🥰
That sweater vest with the plaid pants would look good with a black long-sleeve mock neck underneath!
Gorgeous Witchy main character vibes in the intro ✨❤
that last outfit is THE ONE!!!
Every time I watch a new video of yours I fall more in love with your hair!
i am obsessed with the last outfit
When you go to private catholic school your entire life and now dark academia/school girl style gives you PTSD vibes. 😭
I AM SO SORRY LOL
Accurate. A black blazer , white shirt and a below the knee skirt make me shiver 😂
Tots tots tots... Anglican for me, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it, until you just described it completely perfect here.
@@CarrieDayton Awwww- no Carrie- personally, did I just willingly watch this whole video?- yes, yes I did.
feeling this so hard hahah

I think the body suit, pants from outfit #1, and blazer would make another cute combo! Loved this video and seeing you “shop” from your closet! Xoxo

I think outfit 2 would be so cute tucked in! Outfit 1 is absolutely everything and I want it on my body right now 😫😍
Yay more dress up from your closet. I so enjoy
I have been obsessed with plaid trousers.
Eliminate the collared shirt and tuck the cardigan into outfit #2 and I think it would look sooo cute!
Omgosh Carrie the last look!!!! I have oversized blazers & unsure how to wear em but, pairing it with a chunky sweater is brilliant!!!😍❤️
I gasped when this video started because YOU LOOK SO BEAUTIFUL! This hairstyle is everything!
Obsessed with the last one

The second outfit is 100% what I wore to Catholic school but my suit was red!! Giving me major nostalgia !
For the shoes I find that black socks look best with my low top docs :) you may like them better with crop pants that way!!

You are so beautiful and I really enjoyed this video. I think the first one was my favorite but they were all amazing. Thanks for sharing with us!
Oh yes! I love it already! I haven't even watched it yet!!
I think for the second (schoolgirlish) outfit, tucking in the tops would've helped! Especially since the skirt was too big.

Can you plzzzz do an outfit inspired by every Taylor Swift album??? 😍😍😍😍
Love your outfit and your success. Thanks for sharing this sweetie.
LOVE THIS VIBE

I love this so much! I have been waiting for this vid!
Outfit #2 was very Rory in her Chilton days.
Love the first and last outfits the best. You look fabulous!
Loved the outfits!
Since some academia styles are vintage, button down vests, blazers, and boxy bags are other key parts of the look. Your chunky 👞 are perfect. ♥️
The last outfit is my absolute favorite!! Lol “An acadeem?” was a great moment
totally love this video idea! I'm obsessed!
this aesthetic looks so good on you!!
My private school uniform was white and red polos, navy blue pants and a red, blue, green, and yellow plaid skirt and white buttoned blouse❤️
