Your reaction was priceless! Marcelito Pomoy taught himself this song, he has no classical training, rather taught himself how to sing from an early age. He learned this song by listening to a recording by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. His performance, considering that he requires a translator to carry on a conversation in English even though he understands it well but has trouble speaking it, is gorgeous. His native language is Philipino Tagalog, and he has no formal training. The recording engineer was teasing him about his female voice. That's why he spit her out at the end. Notice his big grin after doing that. He is singing now in English, Italian, Spanish and Chinese but he does not speak those languages. Possibility even more by now. He grew up on the streets from age 7 or 8. On September 21, 2014, Pomoy married Joan Paraiso of Calauag, Quezon, and they have one daughter, Marcella Janiah. He is very humble, helping out his neighbors with odd jobs and repairs, even though his reported net worth is around $5,000,000 USD. His ambition serves him well in whatever he does!

No falsetto here. Marcelito was born with the ability to sing in both soprano and tenor ranges. And as an Italian, I can tell you that his Italian pronunciation is impeccable.

What gets me is the difference between his head/falsetto voice while in male mode in contrast (sometimes immediately) with his female voice. I love that they're so distinct from each other.

Good reaction. Marcelito is also singing in two languages, Italian and English, NEITHER of which is his native language, since he is Filipino. Notice, too, that he's sitting down. The song is done live, with no studio "gimmicks". The cover is Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. He has also recorded this song with dual tracks that is more "perfect" sounding. Still an absolute marvel in this offering.

He only speak a little English. Even he is a Filipino, Tagalog is not his native language either. He grew up away from his family.

Thanks Caleb for your reaction.Marcelito did not change anything from the original version. It was an attempt to recreate a duet of Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli by one person. To showcase his natural talent I guess. As I heard he did not have any formal vocal training and in fact had a very hard upbringing.

I am a new subscriber. I think you have done an excellent critique on Marcelito and Angelina Jordan. (So far those are the only reviews I have listened to) You do not appear to be cynical or jaded, but you seem honest in your criticisms if you have any. You also do a very good job explaining without sounding overly professorial, pedantic or judgmental. And it is clear you are happy for their talent and or successes without any envy or snarkiness in your review. You come across as very professional yet likable. Good for you!

Marcelito Castro Pomoy IS THE REAL DEAL. I had the great privilege of meeting and watching him in concert in June in Toronto. Check out his life story; it is worthy of a movie. Watching him live was like an out of body experience. The videos DO NOT do his voice any justice. Proud to be Filipino. Cheers from Toronto.

I'm not sure what the culture is in Khazakstan when it comes to music but in the Philippines, music is a cultural fabric. Little kids spend their days banging spoons together and singing, going house to house during Christmas to sing carols, going to Fiestas and church festivals singing. When there's just no food to be had and they're hungry they start singing to forget their hunger.
So, just like when Schonberg and Boublil went to the Philippines looking to cast Miss Saigon musical and pleasantly surprised to find a lot of talent during casting putting Lea Salonga in the lead role... yet if you tour the country you'll find Lea Salonga voices or better in the karaoke on a street corner. They're not trained, classically or otherwise, as most of them are very poor, but their talent is not just in singing, their talent is in mimicry such that they learn from the masters just by listening to them and mimicking the sound the easiest way they can pull it off. It's also how they can sing in any language.
That's how you get Arnel Pineda, another street kid, who can sing to sound like anybody including Steve Perry. So when Filipinos look at shows like American Idol or AGT, we have this very judgy attitude about it because most of the contestants just sound like the karaoke on the street corner. So when we hear something really unique - like what Marcelito or Dimash are doing, we get like... WHOA! Because, even with our musical tradition and penchant for mimicry, it's just not something the karaoke singers in the street corner can do no matter how hard they try.

So glad another Aussie appreciates Marcelito Pomoy....I have see you do a reaction to Dimash....but the difference between Marcelito Pomoy and Dimash. is Dimash has been trained since he was 5.Along with his parents MUm and Opera singer Dad Singer Songwriter. Marcelito had absolutely no training. You can view his life story on Wikipedia. When you read his story you will be amazed at this amazing singer..Since I become a fan of Marcelito. As Australian I did not know too much about the Philippines. Exception it was an island "Över there." 70,000. islands well that nearly blew me away. I have since studied up on the Philippines, The Culture, The People, The history . World War 11. All due to this remarkable young man .I do hope that you will read up on him then you will really appreciate him not just as a singer but a remarkable Human Being.

The song itself " the prayer" is a miracle.. it's very heavenly very emphasized. I guess this has a message to the world... Humility and blessing. No matter how low pomoy was as a street child. He is still endowed with a gift by our creator. This song is the best performance of pomoy so far. Amazing. His AGT performance has a global social impact. Compared to his PGT performance.

I understand what Marcelito is doing with this duet, and it's amazing. What I would love to see is a version in which he sings both duet performances but recorded separately, then overlayed onto one track. A bit is lost in the transitioning from one to the other in this particular presentation. An overlayed track would allow the duet performances to run their full range, one layered over the other. Fantastic though. And I especially enjoy the reaction from all the vocal coaches, yours included, Caleb.

Listening to Marcelito, I had an impression that he's a fantastic voice imitator. That's why he is not offering his own interpretation of a song but literally imitates every note, timber and intonation of different singers. It's super impressive and I admire his obvious talent but it all kinda reminded me of circus tricks, to be honest... I would like to hear him singing an original song where his own personality would shine through...

Singing an iconic, beautiful song while sitting down and making it seem effortless: CHECK.
Switching from a head tone to a chest tone and getting both perfect: CHECK
Doing it better than any other “dual singer” & making most vocal coaches or critics show that they need to find another god damned job: PRICELESS 👍🏻

Caleb, there is an 11 member (5 women, 6 men) A Cappella ensemble called "Voctave" to which I think you would enjoy reacting. Although Voctave has numerous TH-cam videos, I recommend that you start with their "Disney Princess Medley" (2017) and then "Disney Love Medley" (late 2015).
Note: The "Disney Love Medley" was recorded when Voctave had only 8 members. It features Kirstin Maldonado of Pentatonix fame and Jeremy Michael Lewis of the Acousticats. That video currently has 32 million views.

Wonderful reaction and analysis. You break it down expertly. But just in case it passed your notice, he did all that sitting down. Not an easy feat.

Yeah, I agree that it's difficult to connect with the song, because the point of a duet is to sing together, and by default, a solo duet is disconnected because you're only singing one part at a time. A duet is technically not a duet if none of the lines are sung together, but with that said, this really does showcase his vocal agility and skill of two drastically different voices types and being able to swap back and forth as if it's two different people singing one after the other.
I like the karaoke app Smule because there are people who sing with themselves and harmonize, which is really cool. And there are some on there who, like Dimash and Marcelito, like to sing with a female voice, and do duets by singing each part separately and the app splices it together for you. It's really fun to do, and I use it to give me perspective of how much I've developed as a singer in technique and musicality.

Listen to the original with Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli and see how much Marcelito sounds like them and that is what this performance was about. Marcilito singing "Power of Love" is the same thing. I like the technical approach to your reaction .

Great reaction. I love Marcelito. Unlike Dimash he is not perfect in his singing (a bit flat and pitchy at times) but he is fenomenal. He is self taught and won the Philiphines Got Talent or Philiphines Idol back in 2011. He is a mimic. He covers the songs trying to sound like the original artist and he does a great job at that. I've seen him sing like Celine Dion, Andrea Boccelli, Beyoncé, Freddie Mercury, etc. Unfortunately as he is not a musician he doesn't have the ability to recreate the songs he is doing (unlike you did with SOS, or like Dimash does), so he as to rely on others to have material to work with. This way he will never be as well Known as his talent deserves.

Like your description and now understand his popularity. Talent is talent and being a mimic is a gift. He has the ear for music and would be good to hear him sing in his own voice.

Yes, I noticed pitchiness just a few seconds in. But the texture of his voice is very nice.

That is not true at all! He could sing anything that is presented to him, I have no doubt! He is so gifted, nothing could be a challenge to his amazing talent!
