Mr Zach, My name is Dave and this is my son's computer that i follow you with. I am 68 years old and have started or helped start lots of horses and mules in my time. I could tell that June is a real stand up mule from the beginning. My Dad had 3 mules, full brothers in his later years and one of them named Toad was exactly like June. Always up on the bit and ready for a load the Amish in our area kept them two seasons when they first settled in our area(west central indiana) and they worked them in big hitches on the jockey stick. they all lived for 30 years and were my Dads greatest joy. I believe you are the greatest teacher of all the teamsters on this "you tube" and I watch the ones you have mentioned before. I admire your belief in the almighty and think you are an inspiration to any wanting to learn about being a teamster . wishing you and your family nothing but the best. Dave Irwin

I have been watching your channel for a long while from Wales, and really enjoy all the videos, but especially the training ones. You mentioned in this one whilst ground driving to always be behind and not to the side. Is this always or just when training. I ground drive a single Haflinger a lot and wondered if you would recommend that in this case too? Many thanks Zach and all the best from Wales, Rhys
Hello! Thanks for taking time to watch and comment, and the question! So, it’s good practice to try to stay behind the animal or animals when ground driving. A little to the side isn’t a big deal like working single. But when you swing the animal left or right, it’s best to stay behind them. You’ve got more control that way. Sometimes you can’t depending on what you’re doing, but in general…I try to stay behind them. Thanks again for the question and I hope I’ve answered it well for you. Take care my friend and do come again, please
@@zachodommulelogging Many thanks for answering my question so quickly! Much appreciated, oh I’ll be watching all the videos, especially as you keep up with the training and getting back into the woods. Take it easy and keep up the good work!
Tires are cheap. Creates more drag. This way I’m going it is the best way I’ve found. I have a sled to use when needed for other projects. I wouldn’t invest anything else into these old tires. I can get them free whenever I need anymore. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please

That’s a good idea. But I put rocks in it picked up from off the farm around here and there. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Whatever your mules weigh, they can handle 30% of their body weight for 6-8 hrs pretty well when in good working condition. Obviously during that 6-8 hrs you’re going to have to give them breaks to catch their wind and whatnot. Some mules will pull a little more and some a little less. That’s why I said in the video, “to watch the mules!” Not all are created equal. This 30% deal is just a good starting place. That is all. Then you adjust from there. Thanks for the question and thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
I think I missed the part of how it’s connected to their bit , because you said if they start to move, they have to pull the cart with their mouth. Do you have something connected to their bit? I only saw the chain coming from the Doubletree back to the cart.
With the LINES tied back to the cart and the inside trace chains dropped, if they try to take off…they will be pulling the cart with the LINES. The lines are hooked to their mouth which translates into them having to pull the cart with their mouth and they won’t do that much. However, this setup will not work on an empty cart or wagon. The cart needs to be hooked to a dead weight load such as I have here in the video. And great big wagon with brakes would accomplish the same thing. But again, it has to be heavy enough that when you drop those inside trace chains, and tie the lines back…that they have to pull the load with their mouth and the load needs to be heavy enough that they can’t do that. Does that make sense?
I can’t say there is a real advantage. I know way back when, chain was easier to get than leather was. So that’s why chain was more popular down south and especially on mule harness. Chain lays better on the harness when not in use and that’s one particular reason I like it. Tradition is the main thing I think now. Mules just don’t look right to me in leather or bio tugs. Chain just looks right to me. It’s easier to adjust as well. But those are just my personal opinions. Thank you ma’am for the question and I hope I answered it for you. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
@@jimbickell9807well, traditionally they’re made to “spread” the team out wider of course. But I’ve found that with the spreaders in there..it creates a little softer feel and the animal can move their heads a little more freely. Plus it’s a straighter line from my hands to their mouth which makes it a tad easier to get a handle on them. It will allow just a little more freedom of movement. Also, all things being equal..when you put spreaders on the same double tree width, you have to adjust your cross line buckles back to allow for the extra width. With that said, the buckles are closer to their hips or gives the illusion of longer cross lines. Way back, cross lines were longer than they’re made these days. From a safety standpoint…longer cross lines are a good thing. Keeps them from going thru the hame rings and getting stuck if the team gets outta whack. But stay chains will help accomplish the same thing also. So, that’s kinda why I do it. Then I use longer spreaders when working to my log wagon. Because my log wagon is 48” double tree width and my ground skid stretcher is 40”. So I can flip my cross lines up in between the hames when ground skidding and draw the team together for the narrow double tree width…then when I hitch to the wagon to bring the load out, throw my cross lines back over in the middle of the team and the spreaders will let em spread out enough for the wagon double tree. Does that make sense? Hope I answered your question to where ya can understand it. Thanks for the question. And thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care my friend and do come again, please
I don’t believe so. The front doesn’t do much for this particular deal anyway. The cart may roll back a little and let your tongue chains hang straight down instead of being more “out in front and up.” But the idea is the same. You might scotch the back wheels to keep it from rolling back if you unhook your single trees. Main thing is to tie the lines back and have the cart loaded with a dragging weight such as a tire or something heavy enough that they can’t pull with their mouth. If that makes sense. Anyway, thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please

But again, it has to be heavy enough that when you drop those inside trace chains, and tie the lines back…that they have to pull the load with their mouth and the load needs to be heavy enough that they can’t do that. Does that make sense?
Is there an advantage to chain traces?
I can’t say there is a real advantage. I know way back when, chain was easier to get than leather was. So that’s why chain was more popular down south and especially on mule harness. Chain lays better on the harness when not in use and that’s one particular reason I like it. Tradition is the main thing I think now. Mules just don’t look right to me in leather or bio tugs. Chain just looks right to me. It’s easier to adjust as well. But those are just my personal opinions. Thank you ma’am for the question and I hope I answered it for you. what are you looking for from the spreaders you are using, thanks
Do you mean, what they’re for?
@@zachodommulelogging yes, what is their purpose
@@zachodommulelogging good answer, and understandable, thanks
@@jimbickell9807yessir yw and good deal
I noticed when you set the brake on your cart you have a yoke. I have chains on my cart. Will that cause me to get in any trouble?
I don’t believe so. The front doesn’t do much for this particular deal anyway. The cart may roll back a little and let your tongue chains hang straight down instead of being more “out in front and up.” But the idea is the same. You might scotch the back wheels to keep it from rolling back if you unhook your single trees. Main thing is to tie the lines back and have the cart loaded with a dragging weight such as a tire or something heavy enough that they can’t pull with their mouth. If that makes sense. Anyway, thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
