Being a random traveler in my teens and early 20's, this always brings a tear to my eyes, similar memories, but expressed as I never could. You have to have done it to know it. Just a beautiful beautiful song.
Without a doubt, this is one of the greatest "road songs" I've ever heard. Traveling the world, I think of this song often... Thanks Antje. Loved seeing her in concert a year or two ago. Just wished she toured a bit more.
I was in Ireland with some of my family. We were in a pub one night and she sat in and did this song when the two guys performing took a break. I got a short snipit recorded on my phone and was searching for the rest when I found this. How cool.
Thank you for this song. In 2023. Still so relevant to some young and upcoming families 🙏🏻❤️. Love it so much. We listen to this on the way to and from Michigan for vacations every year with our young boys. They love it. And I may sneak off for a nip of whiskey by an impromptu fire on the beach at night and listen again 😏 I sat and listened to this on empire beach Michigan while a storm was rolling in, and I almost didn’t leave. It just made me feel perfect.
After I graduated I was going to move to Montana and had this song on repeat and would ball, sing, and scream to this when I was coming home from classes before graduation. Didn’t happen, but this song at least still keeps the dream alive.
Antje! I'm so excited that you're coming to Minneapolis! I've followed your work for many years but haven't seen you in concert yet. Lyric choices, unique melodies and beautiful voice! Can't wait to see you in December. Thank you for your great gift of creative artistry to us all.
End in sight, Copyright Laws for Artists , emotionally I cannot navigate a day without music , so grateful. No panic on the streets of London for the artists involved. My mind’s eye is anchored in The Velvet Revolution in Prague every story I listened to. The icon on Justice Barrett being sworn in? 60 Minutes to me. Ongoing Government investigation.
Just stumbled onto this song--I love it. It speaks so me and puts words and sounds to so many memories. It's a song that will stick with me for the rest of my life, I think.
Thank you, Antje, for such a hauntingly beautiful song. I heard it for the first time recently on Pandora and was mesmerized. I can't get enough of it.
We bid our friends goodbye We promised we would write them And headed north up 95 Into the great unknown We turned up our stereo And felt so reckless and alive We didn't know who we would be We didn't know where we would end up When we headed down that road A little food and our guitars In the backseat and that old cello The one that would get stolen In a town in Idaho And it's a long way to Michigan and back And it's a long way Cause it's a long way, the clouds upon our backs And it's a long, long, long, long way And I have never seen Reflections of the cleanest Of blue as the Minnesota lakes Those were the longest nights Of wood smoke and Northern Lights As we talked until the morning came The light of glowing embers As sweet as I remember Among the rustling of the trees The legend of the harvest moon And sweet ballad of the loon I felt as ancient as I was meant to be And it's a long way to Washington and back And it's a long way Cause it's a long way, the clouds upon our backs And it's a long, long, long, long way I called you from a payphone In windy, cold Missoula And then from Midland in the rain A place as proud and sad as The South Dakota badlands It touched me more than I could explain The dirt poor reservation Where the Oglala nation Tries to hang on to its ways Feather and Peyote pipe and A six pack of Miller Light Sits on the dashboard of a beat up Chevrolet And it's a long way to Tennessee and back And it's a long way Cause it's a long way on the worn out heels of Kerouac And it's a long, long, long, long way Out in California We touched the other ocean And I still have that jar of sand In the Arizona desert The sky goes on forever You've never seen a thing as grand And North Montana was cold She keeps her secrets frozen Under glaciers way up north And people have got lost up there In the home of the grizzly bear And you can ask the mountain But the mountain doesn't care And it's a long way to Delaware and back And it's a long way Cause it's a long way, the clouds up on our backs And it's a long, long, long, long way Cause it's a long way on the worn out heels of Kerouac And it's a long, long, long, long way
I've heard this song before and enjoyed it but it really clicked today and it's been repeated most of the day. Sometimes just the right song comes along to put you in just the right place.
Beautiful song, Saw her at a house party years ago for someone named Mike Meldrum, Buffalo, NY. Recently passed, a true inspiration that believed in the artist's pursuit to create & gave those artists a stage
I randomly clicked on this song from another artist I was on...I was about to leave TH-cam but had a feeling I should check Antje out. SO GLAD I did! She is gorgeous and amazing. Love love her style. Thanks for sharing!
What a simply stunning lady with so beautiful eyes and such a very awesome amazing voice ..... so much i hope life and love bless her so very well . DMITRI
Hypnotic. First heard her in Bank of American commercial (Merry-Go-Round). She seldom travels West but is gong to be in Colorado soon. I'm going to make the two-day drive. Someone below compared her to Joni Mitchell. Thought that myself.
KronantheBarbarian agree see their God I dont understand keith wigley on youtube and its only the River original.. Ruby Tuesday Rolling Stones cover Keith and others..
I definitely like this arrangement (from the Little Peppermints album?) better than the one on the album The Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer. Prepping my faves playlist for labor with my first child next month, I made sure to add this one.
I am sorry if my surviving this ill conceived Boston brainchild not at all hailing from England, has affected Your Brilliant Art. I received a really encouraging edits from a Priest I know well this morning, my arena.
I heard this song on Pandora, and it stopped me in my tracks. An absolutely beautiful song.
ditto but I didn't stop I got online and found it here.
She hooked me with Sleepy Sea of Indigo and Blue. This one came later, but holy cow. What an amazing song this is.
People whose Pandora recommends this are my kind of people.

So much beauty, love, and sentiment in this song. A true masterpiece.

This is one of those songs that just gave me shivers on first listen. Very few do this. It's incredible.

If a song more beautiful than this exists, I don't know what it is. Simply achingly beautiful. Brings tears to the eyes.
Beautiful song to drive along the open highway.
"It a long way from Delaware and back". Poignant.
Pandora recommended this song to me on a late night drive home last night and it was so incredibly moving. Thank you, Antje

Adore this song.
This song makes me want to hit the road to destinations unknown!
I haven't heard lyrics this authentic or a voice so engaging since Joni Mitchell. I'm going to be spreading the word about this lovely artist!
Steven Warner have you ever heard that Angel that is Allison Krauss?

Are you a through hiker??
If this song is not a road trip waiting to happen I don’t know what is. I hope someday to visit all these places. Maybe…someday…Thanks!

All the feels 🥰
We bid our friends goodbye
We promised we would write them
And headed north up 95
Into the great unknown
We turned up our stereo
And felt so reckless and alive
We didn't know who we would be
We didn't know where we would end up
When we headed down that road
A little food and our guitars
In the backseat and that old cello
The one that would get stolen
In a town in Idaho
And it's a long way to Michigan and back
And it's a long way
Cause it's a long way, the clouds upon our backs
And it's a long, long, long, long way
And I have never seen
Reflections of the cleanest
Of blue as the Minnesota lakes
Those were the longest nights
Of wood smoke and Northern Lights
As we talked until the morning came
The light of glowing embers
As sweet as I remember
Among the rustling of the trees
The legend of the harvest moon
And sweet ballad of the loon
I felt as ancient as I was meant to be
And it's a long way to Washington and back
And it's a long way
Cause it's a long way, the clouds upon our backs
And it's a long, long, long, long way
I called you from a payphone
In windy, cold Missoula
And then from Midland in the rain
A place as proud and sad as
The South Dakota badlands
It touched me more than I could explain
The dirt poor reservation
Where the Oglala nation
Tries to hang on to its ways
Feather and Peyote pipe and
A six pack of Miller Light
Sits on the dashboard of a beat up Chevrolet
And it's a long way to Tennessee and back
And it's a long way
Cause it's a long way on the worn out heels of Kerouac
And it's a long, long, long, long way
Out in California
We touched the other ocean
And I still have that jar of sand
In the Arizona desert
The sky goes on forever
You've never seen a thing as grand
And North Montana was cold
She keeps her secrets frozen
Under glaciers way up north
And people have got lost up there
In the home of the grizzly bear
And you can ask the mountain
But the mountain doesn't care
And it's a long way to Delaware and back
And it's a long way
Cause it's a long way, the clouds up on our backs
And it's a long, long, long, long way
Cause it's a long way on the worn out heels of Kerouac
And it's a long, long, long, long way
Thank you.
Thanks for the lyrics to this song which i have been thinking about lately; Vielen Danke

My favorite song so I went to buy it on iTunes, but isn’t there or on Spotify either :(
My new anthem.
She just threw Michigan in there :0) She is awesome :0)

Why can't I find this version on YT Music or Spotify, does anyone know?
This is (I believe) the original version, before she re-recorded it for the album. I got the original mp3 from a music blog post ages ago.
This version is a little faster tempo than the original recording. I like it better at the original speed. It's a 6 minute song on Itunes.
Actually, THIS is the original version, from her debut album, Little Peppermints.
I like this version better. I heard this on Pandora but, strangely, the album doesn't currently seem to be in print.
