Robots is a 2005 American computer-animated science fiction adventure comedy film produced by Blue Sky Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It was directed by Chris Wedge and written by David Lindsay-Abaire, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel from a story by Ron Mita, Jim McClain and Lindsay-Abaire. It stars the voices of Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Greg Kinnear, Mel Brooks, Amanda Bynes, Drew Carey and Robin Williams. The story follows a robot named Rodney Copperbottom (McGregor) who seeks out his idol Bigweld (Brooks) at his company in Robot City, only to discover a plot by its new owner Ratchet (Kinnear) to cheat older robots into buying expensive upgrades.

@@TeenDream888 It’s not even a terrible film, but Mel Brooks has done SO much better and his career has spanned several decades. It’s not like, say, some ‘80s or ‘90s kid being introduced to “Get Smart” for the first time and recognizing Don Adams’s voice as Inspector Gadget’s. Mel Brooks never went anywhere. He just kept making movies, even after he retired from directing. He’s damn near one hundred years old, and he’s still making regular voice cameos in animated films.

Robin Williams said in an interview that this movie helped him get out of a career slump. Robots was his first big hit since Good Will Hunting, he returned to voice acting since quitting Disney several years prior!
I think Piper had more chemistry with Rodney than the other one.
I kinda wished that for Cappy she filled in the role of Piper, like I can imagine her being a great business woman in the Industries, and when she's not, she constantly hangs out with more worn down, imperfect robots like the ones we see in the movie itself. That way we get more chemistry between her and Rodney.

it's as if they just wanted to add another character. Although Cappy is cool, the relationship with Rodney messes up everything. Not every movie needs to have several ships to be good.
Yeah, when I watched the movie as a kid, I suspected Piper to end up with Rodney. I was really confused when he suddenly went with the other woman.
I think that Piper is younger than Rodney. I think Rodney is like mid 20's and Piper is still a teen.
I love how thought-out and fully realized this robot world is. I also love Ratchet and Madame Gasket and the "Underground" song scene. In my mind, it will always be one of Blue Sky's best.
Using Tom Waits was an inspired choice.

Ferdinand was fine, Ice age 1-3 were fun and great, Rio was great and Spies in disguise was actually hilarious and better than most of animated movies of these days and also The peanuts movie was so underrated and cute. Blue Sky was actually a really great but underrated animated studio, I think its really sad they closed the studio, it was great at making animated movies not like Illumination or others
@@Locadel2003 Ferdinand was good but not the best. It was one of those cute little films but not memorable to rewatch. The first three Ice Age movies were definitely good but anything after that was pretty bad. Rio was fantastic especially the visuals with the music. Spice in Disguise was actually really solid as well and it was definitely hilarious. The Peanuts movie is also another one of the best from Blue Sky. I definitely loved that movie as well. Their Studio overall did a great job and it's so sad they shut down

One thing that stuck out to me about this movie was Rodney's dad, I think he's one of the best animated parents of all time, just the way that he keeps encouraging his son to fight for his dreams, heck even when all hope seemed lost he still encouraged Rodney to fight for his dream, I think he's an amazing dad
I’m genuinely surprised how well the movies animation holds up. Like this looks really good for something that came almost 20 years ago
That's the advantage of animating robots... or toys... or something like that. The CG tends to age better.
It took seven years to make.
Robots is unironically my favorite Blue Sky Studios production, it's a movie full of heart and gives you a great message to not give up. Sure there are silly moments here and there and some dated stuff like the Britney dance but overall is an amazing movie. Also, Ratchet is a hilarious antagonist.

Don't forget it also gives you a message to destroy capitalism, and equally great and valuable message.
I'm much more curious about the original Robots cut, which was gonna be way different from the final product.
I'd say that Spies In Disguise is my favorite Blue Sky Studios Film.
Still one of my favorite movies of all times, and one I still wish could've had at least 1 sequel to it. I dunno, something about this film has always been so inspiring to me because of its complex setting and its simple, yet enjoyable characters.

I'm not sure if they had an idea for a sequel, this movie kinda happened by accident. Chris Wedge and William Joyce originally set out to adapt Joyce's book "Santa Calls" but came up with a story about robots instead.
I loved this movie as a kid. It does have issues, but no movie is perfect. I always loved how inventive it was and I loved some of the jokes in it as well, like the part where Fender just out of nowhere breaks into dance to defeat a horde of robots. XD
He weaponized britney spears like a god.
Blue Sky Studios (RIP), was definitely a studio centered on their incredible art. I have the Art Of book from them and all of their concepts are absolutely breath taking. Their stories aren't nearly as strong, but I definitely commend them on their amazing designs.
Problem was they ended up in the curse

Robots influenced my freaking childhood. After seeing it I wanted to be an Inventor, and when I started to get into High School I narrowed it down to Mechanical Engineering. I got my Bachelor's back in May and I am starting a new job at the end of January after a long time of Job Hunting.

A Work Of Fiction Inspiring One's Dreams Brings A Smile To My Face🙂
That's so cool because I love this movie so much! Not quite the same for me but after watching the movie like 100 times I started making a lot of things and experimenting with creating! This is forever my No.1 movie for me 🤩
Back when I used social media other than TH-cam to communicate with others, I put this movie into my favorites' list. Y'know, up there with "Sybil" and "Requiem for a Dream". I never went back to it, and for some time wondered if I should be ashamed to even have put it on there. I'm glad I got a reminder of why I liked it so much.
As a growing teenager, I thought that commentary about forcing the poor robots into getting the more expensive parts was pretty clever, and also the scene with the villian's mother treating the worker robots as slaves (which, being honest, painfully reflects real life). I think these type of themes that address social inequity have always gotten to me, even more so movies that attempt to tackle them.
While I can agree that this movie is kinda hit or miss. I do stand by that Herb is one of the underated animated fathers. Always supports his son and encouraging him to do his best. Him and Rodney is the heart of the movie. Also Bigwell is good, too.
I also love that he isn't generically supportive. You can tell how much he's thought about Rodney's dream. He gets that there are real risks of pursuing that dream but also that Rodney would be unhappy if he gave it up.
I feel that a movie that focused more on a small scale story might have worked better. Like instead of stopping an evil conspiracy he just has a really hard time actually finding employment or something else more relatable. Perhaps including the family in more of the story.
I like how Herb isn’t your typical father that doesn’t approve of his son’s/the protagonist’s big dreams like you see in most Disney or Pixar films. Instead, he encourages his son to follow his dreams since he never had the chance to do so. And on top of that, he never puts his son down for not being able to get a job.
He was a better father than Buck Cluck from Chicken Little that's for sure
But let's not compare him to what I want to see fried as KFC chicken
The “Hit me Baby one More Time” sequence still makes me laugh for just how random it is 😂
For me, the creativity is actually the nostalgic factor.

This was one of my most favorite animated film as a kid, it was so hilarious as hell. Also just love it when Fender yell AUNT FINNIE!!!
Has some very decent parts. And Robin Williams still does a decent enough job! The animation is also from blue sky and it still looks really good visually.
The animation is especially impressive since this movie was only their Second Film after the first Ice Age
The main problem critic seems to have with this movie is that the concept is tired. But when I watched it as a kid it wasn’t tired for me, this was the first time I experienced it. And it resonated with me in a way few movies have. I love this movie especially because the Spanish voice actors knocked it out of the park.
for CGI animation made in 2005 it looks better than say Madagascar 1 or chicken little from that year alone
The fact that everything is metal means the animation has aged pretty well.
I legit love a lot of things about this movie
A) the commentary on how the rich will give people higher prices to better their lives and having the poor die on the street
B) the world building is so imaginative with that mechanical cyberpunk vibe
C)this movie introduced me to the banger that is underground by Tom waits
The thing I remember most about this movie is how the villains were defeated. The mother thrown into the incinerator, and the son stripped of his parts and strung up from the ceiling. That messed me up as a kid.
This has probably already been said in the comment but this movie is based on a children's book from Children's Illustrator Bill Joyce, creator of Rolie Polie Ollie and Rise of the Guardians. He actually lives in my hometown here in Louisiana and has a heavy hand in our local Arts Council.

Honestly, I've always had a soft spot for this movie.
I love the creative design behind everything, how every robot looks different, how everything in the city looks unique, even some of the subtler things like how the poor robots are made out of mis-matching parts while the rich characters (the villain and Halle Berry's character) are all sleek and symmetrical, like the poorer ones have to use literally whatever they can find just to keep living. There's a lot of thought put into the detail of the movie.
Plus, I LOVE the message, or rather, I love how the message is DELIVERED. Yes, it's a 'follow your heart' story, but it doesn't just say 'follow your heart'. The message is more about working hard and looking for places where you can actually help out. You brought up Flik from 'A Bug's Life' and that's a good comparison, in that Flik is just an inventor for the sake of being an inventor, and the movie stresses that his inventions often do more harm than good. In 'Robots', the saying is 'see a need, fill a need'. Rodney sees his dad is struggling with his work, and sets about finding a way to fill that need, making something to help his father do his job better. It's not for profit, it's just because he loves his father and wants to make his life better. It's the very nature of what invention should be, trying to improve things for people, and this movie does a good job of showing that it's not easy, but if it matters then it's not something you should give up on. Don't just invent pointless shit for the sake of it, look for something that actually needs to be improved or fixed, and then find ways of doing exactly that.
Lastly, it has maybe the only fart joke I've ever legitimately found funny. It's the only fart joke in the movie, so you know exactly what it is and how it ends, with the incredibly dark joke of one random side character DYING as a result of it. That kills me every time I see it.
As you said, it's not flawless, but when it's good, it's great. When it's bad, it's just meh. This is definitely a guilty pleasure movie for me, I think it deserves more attention.
I love this movie despite the flaws in it, especially the flaws Doug pointed out. Still a fan of Robin Williams. Rest in Peace Robin.
The fact that Tom waits is on the soundtrack is amazing
This movie and Shrek 2 sparked my love of Tom Waits music. He should be in more kids films.
Not only Robin Williams, Halle Berry and so on. But they also got Amanda Bynes as that yellow girl robot as well.
This is still one of my favorite animated movies, I don't care who you are!

This is one of my favorite movies from sheer aesthetics alone. Very creative looking film.

Mel Brooks in his Memoir, All About Me! that came out last year, I think he mentioned this movie in like a sentence or two and said, it was a fun to be a voice actor.
I still love this movie. It was my first (at the time) non disney movie I fell in love with.

One odd thing I remember from this movie is before it really starts, they actually incorporated their own "turn off your cellphone in the theater" skit, and they still keep it in the DVD. As for the movie itself, it's sort of like Avatar in a way; the story may be cliched, but they do a really good job at worldbuilding.
I just watched this movie a couple of weeks ago and still had a lot of fun with it. I remember watching it a lot as a kid and wanted to see how it held up. I still think it's a fun and wildly inventive movie. I always thought that world looked so amazing and I would have loved to have seen it realized in a theme park or something because that's kind of what the movie always felt like to me. Definitely a good, lighthearted laugh with a really creative world and truly BlueSky's finest work
I saw this movie in the theater with a friend when we were 15. A few years ago after my friend and his wife had their first kid I gave them a Blu-Ray of the movie as a Christmas gift to show their kid someday. He laughed and said, “Memories.”
So yeah, I have an undeniable soft spot for this movie.
I grew up with this movie. Me and my parents would watch this together and we would all have a great time. As a kid my parents would laugh at some of the jokes that where more adultish and I would ask why its funny, they told wait until I'm older and you'd get it. I'm older now and those jokes are even funnier knowing why they're funny.
The sad thing about doug reviewing a kid movie is that for him you either have the mind of a 3 years old or are an adult, and kids would love this because "moving objects" and "things uniting", that is a baby not a kid. I recall the part of the lamp post passing out as the funniest part of the movie, and the britney dance as an attack
Yeah, honestly, it always annoys me when reviewers assume that kids have the mindset of a 3-month-old, and don't even know what's going on on the d@mn screen. Like... I can't be the only one who paid attention to the plot, even if just on a basic surface level, right?

This was one that really takes me back, I remember when the film came out, I was 7 at the time, and I loved the designs and creativity this had. Yeah it’s not perfect, but it does have a soft spot in my heart

To hear that William Joyce worked on this film surprised me a lot
I think he also worked on Disney's Meet The Robinsons 2 years later, on account of the fact that it was based on one of his books he made. Seeing and comparing the visual style of both movies and how some of it matches, with their futuristic atmospheres tells you everything you need to know
On the twenty-first day of Disneycember, Doug Walker gave to me: A city I want to live in, Boba Fett, Wes Anderson’s masterpiece, a heartfelt tribute, a Clone Wars follow-up, the best Ice Age movie, a confusing game series, Roger Rabbit 2, Thor’s creative bankruptcy, bad-ass history, Pixar’s biggest bomb, Marvel’s craziest ending, Blue Sky’s first sequel, Order Glitchy Glitch, a Zemeckis remake, the best Fox family, a Marvel horror movie, Domee Shi’s debut, one of my favorite Disney shows, Blue Sky’s first movie, and the best Spider-Man game ever!
This one of those movies that I watch when I wanna laugh and feel good. I love the message, the characters, and the comedy. And while most roles of Robin’s made me either chuckle or I only laughed hard when I was a child, his character Fender makes me laugh still to this day in tears.
I'm pretty mid on this movie, but man I wish more animated films had that cool mechanized-world look. I'm a huge fan of steampunk and cyberpunk and such and I love seeing that. For me the potential of the world is the main draw.
Also that dominos scene was awesome, and probably one of the first movies I saw that had a scene that left me really wowed by the animation spectacle.
Let's goo this is my childhood favourite this movie is pretty creative and fun. The parents are the best part especially the father.
But i understand the problems can't be ignored , and still think this movie had more to offer.

Robots is quite the underrated gem from Blue Sky Studios (R.I.P.) loved the World building and it's characters and jokes are quite funny and hilarious and Robin Williams is hilarious (R.I.P.) for having the best quote in the movie it's a fusion of Jazz and Funk it's Called Junk Prue genius and I'd still liked the movie even to this day
The story is pretty basic but I remember absolutely loving this film as a kid! It's hilarious!
One of my favorite jokes they did was during the bit where Rodney and Fender were doing armpit farts till they get a Dutch Oven from the Aunt.
The street lamp robot outside catches the smell and passes out and we cut to the Chalk Lines where his body was next morning 😏
I am an adult and I proudly say I watch this movie over and over again. To me, it is that good and will always have a special place in my heart. 🌹

I was stuck watching this so many time when my girls were little. They had it on dvd and rather than watching anything else on TV it was always this. I have no idea why they liked it so much. But omg I wanted to accidentally on purpose throw it out.
Shows how memorable this film was because I can hardly remember it at all. But I'm happy they grew out of it.
I really have fond memories of this as I was 5 when this came out. Likely one of the 1st movies I’ve seen in my life.

One of the aspects I really enjoyed was the visual design; notice how every single character, the mains, the background civilians, even the high-end execs, has a unique design to them, often emphasizing a specific attribute or mechanism. It doesn't always work for the story or joke, but it helps add some personality.
Also, you mention bizarre casting choices, but Jay Leno as a *fire hydrant* for maybe 10 seconds total is such a bafflingly pointless decision that I'm surprised no one got fired over it.
I grew up with this movie and I love it and it is amazing to me.
While I was never the biggest fan of the movie even as a kid, I will say there are 3 things I will always be thankful to this movie for giving me:
1. My first introduction to Mel Brooks
2. My first introduction to Tom Waits’ “Underground” in a badass music sequence
3. That HILARIOUS side joke about the bad guys father

I love “Bug’s Life” and “Cat’s Don’t Dance” so by Doug’s logic it’s no surprise I love this one too.
I’ll always think that Robots is a underrated gem
As far as generic inventor stories go, this is the one I watched the most as a kid. The dad character really was the best one for me, I just remember his generic lessons to this day cause he said them with heart
The animation actually aged well,even better than some Pixar films.

My favorite joke in the movie was that Ratchet was holding his own dad prisoner, but otherwise shared a warm and supportive relationship with him.

This is a beloved and iconic childhood movie of mine and I will ALWAYS love it to pieces. Or wait... PARTS!
I'm still laughing at the "who wants to get fixed" scene where after Rodney says that line, the dog starts whimpering!
I remember seeing a promo trailer for this movie that was the animators showing off the model robots they’d built to use as references for the characters, and explaining how they were figuring out what the world would look like & how everyone would move. It reminded me of the trailers Disney did in the late 90s & early 2000s that showed storyboards, rough animation, animators studying real bear cubs or skateboarders to get references for animating the final product, etc.
I watched this first as a kid with my family and we loved it. Not for the plot but the likable characters, jokes, and world. I guess because we saw it right when it got out we love this film and find it super memorable. I don’t think it stand out today but since we saw it when 3D animation was starting it stands out for us. But cmon! Fender is awesome and hilarious and we still quote him to this day even though I’m in my 20s.

Something I noticed when first watching the movie was a subtle connection to Le Miserables. It felt a little like the Lion King where the loose beats of the story were there but not enough to say "Oh god they just stole the script of Halmet." The difference with Robots is they seem to go more from the perspective of Marius. He is a more middle class, wide-eyed young man who finds himself heartbroken and caught up in a conflict between the poor and the Bourgeoisie. He throws himself into the conflict having had his passion taken from him and winds up in a physical climactic battle. He also meets an upperclassmen young woman though she is not the love he believes he has lost like in Le Mis. This is instead his affection for inventing. There is still a old man who has done amazing things to help people in the past but is now left a nearly broken shell with only very little in his life that he bitterly clings to for some happiness. The man has a change of heart and comes to the young protagonists aid. He does not do it secretly though and immediatly makes amends with the hero rather than it being discovered almost too late. There is a scrappy yet passionate peasant girl who comes from a quirky and even shady family, desperate for self survival. They actually become the good guys unlike the origional but she still has a clear crush on him that goes painfully unrequited. I was genuinly worried they were going to kill Piper off right before the big battle scene like Éponine to act as a Martyr and fuel the lower class side. Considering this is a family movie about robots, I honestly like the simplification and more positive shifts. The fact there is not a lot of moping drama caused by misunderstandings and tragedies is a good thing for this. Le Mis is a beautiful story on the human condition but it is Le Mis and is best as Le Mis. While some great elements can be used for other stories, a lot of the tone just doesn't work for other genres. This movie can get surprisingly dark despite no one really dying and the good guys winning. Having Rodney force matched up with the executive girl wasn't the best thing but it didn't get much in the way. I love the transition of the love interest being into a life passion instead, that old Jean Val Bigweld could share with Rodnius and be more directly connected to the revolution. Since we don't get the constant life on the run we do with the protagonist of the origional, rebuilding his life right only to be forced into a clean state over and over, the one thing he wanted so bad after getting out of prison becoming an ironic continuous punishment; having him broken by the world no longer allowing the one thing he lived for to be relevant works in its place. Instead of rejecting Rodney for loving his adopted daughter out of fear for her own well being in a hostile world, he rejects Rodney for wanting to share a passion he now has lost and been hurt through by the cruel hands of the world they live in. The fact the societal issues are directly preventing the passion they both took imtrest in gives Rodney a more positive and direct reason to fight in the revolution rather than it be just a suicidal act. I do love how the villain's mother is more like the lower class in appearances than you would think but hates them. I love how the upperclass are really only so THROUGH their appearances and money. The plot being that the poor will eventually just die off completly and only leave the desirables thanks to the manipulation of resources by those in power is extremely dark and real. In Le Mis, the historical events of the French revolution were an important background element. By focusing more on Marius making the social conflict element more directly related to him so it can be brought to the forefront, it changed things up enough to work for the genre. Yes, it ends how you would expect with the good guys winning but would we REALLY want to see the rebellion crushed? Do we want a death song by Piper telling us it's alright because she is dying in Rodney's Arms? Do we want Bigweld in his death throws revealing he was the one that pulled Rodney out of the furnace so he could go back home and become a successful small time inventor while the big city burned? No. This is a FAMILY picture. Having said that..the Tom Waits scene..JESUS! It isn't that intense visually on its own..dark and creepy in concept for sure, but nothing too crazy..HOWEVER with "Underground" accompanying it?! If there was ever a perfect theme to the hardship of the working class in a run down slums, desperatly doing the dirty work no one else has the stomcahe to do out of sheer nessesity of survival; this was it! Such an ominous and powerful song to go with the chopshop. The idea that such a sinister place exists underneath the city with the poor inner city streets in between and the pristine big buisness building rising even above that but all interconnected by those that inhabit them..it a brilliant representation of an economically layered society. The right theme needed to play to enhance the reveal of this final layer after Rodney already saw the impenetrable glass ceiling (litterally) and the lesser parts of the city where the more common people lived. I think with what they went with; they nailed it. The song with the gruff voiced Tom Waits and the slow beat played to the image of suffering workers even reminds me of the opening number to Le Mis with the convicts doing physical labor while recognizing this to be their only fate. I really don't know if the creators had Le Mis in mind while making robots but there are so many similar concepts and elements that I really wouldn't be surprised if they did. It really feels like a more family friendly retelling from Marius' perspective. Considering the Gnomeo movies tried to do soemthing simialr, I feel Robots could be a lot worse..and if they DIDN'T take inspiration fir Le Mis..well..I would say they succeeded much better at what Gnomeo failed to do without even trying!
I like how the plot is basically relating to pricing out lower classes from basic healthcare but the movie really drops that point towards the end for a much more standard movie. Still I like it’s cool that those ideas where in there at all but it could have been a lot stronger if they ran with it.
I loved this movie. As a kid, the world it was set in just fascinated me. It was such a creative and fun film.

Mel brooks is amazing at everything
I'll never forget watching this movie after I got cut from a shift working at a theatre because when the main character is messing with the Mel Brooks robot's brain he started singing bicycle built for two and I was the only one who laughed. I was thinking "Hey! It's the joke they put in for the parents, and none of them got it."

I'm surprised Doug didn't talk about how dark this movie gets around the end, melting down what are essentially sentient beings for money.
The first movie I EVER saw in a movie theater for my 6th birthday! As a movie lover your first time at the cinema is HUGE DEAL. I can still remember dancing with my cousins at the ending dance scene 😂 Thankfully the movie still holds up yeah it might be a little generic in parts but I think it’s very inventive (no pun intended) and it has a WHOLE TON OF CHARM AND HEART. Whenever I feel down or doubt myself you’ll still catch me saying
“YOU CAN SHINE NO MATTER WHAT YOUR MADE OF” ❤💙
