  • Pour yourself a drink, sit back and enjoy the ride with us as we make a second pass through South Dakota's incredible Badlands. Starting at the National Park's Pinnacles Entrance we follow Highway 240 as it carves its way south through the best of the Badlands. After a couple stops for wild Bighorn Sheep we arrive at Cedar Pass Lodge just as the sun sets across the Plains.
    Featuring Paul Black's songs "Fly" and "Breathe"

    What I LOVE about your videos is that you keep the sound of the motorcycle. To me, listening to the sound of the bike as you ride is a big part of what riding is all about.

    • @RobertMerz

      Obviously I agree with you, the sound of the engine whether it be bike, truck, or car is part of the experience for me.

    Like that tune.."Breath"..Very appropriate, because that's just what you can do when you get on a bike and let loose for a bit. The feeling can't be explained, gotta be experienced to be understood..Great job, Robert.

      Thanks Wade.
      Yes it is a feeling that cannot be explained, at least not easily, and it is much better to be experienced anyway.

    How do you get the audio so clear? I'm just beginning to capture some of my rides but cannot find a good combination like you have

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok so you are not going to like my answer because it is a lot of work. The audio that you are trying to use is from your forward mounted camera and you are recording wind noise from the wind on the bike and air intake noise, and actual engine noise like your valves, tappets, cam drives etc. What you were hoping and expecting to record is the actual exhaust noise of your bike, but that is way behind all the other stuff you are recording. What I have done is prerecorded my bike from the back of the bike inside several soft bags and dead cat filters to reduce the wind noise and capture mostly my exhaust noise and then created audio tracks from that. When I compose a video I strip the raw audio and build my video only. After that is complete I start again and I begin adding audio according to what I am watching using my prerecordings. Often my audio segments that I splice together are only a few seconds long each, as I build an audio track that I feel suits what am seeing.
      So don't beat yourself up about what you are doing wrong in your video recording, I certainly couldn't come up with an easier solution for myself or I would not do it this way.

    • @81MrAuscher
      @81MrAuscher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RobertMerz I sort of assumed it was something along those lines. From what I've read, there's no real 'simple' solution because of the items you mentioned. Anyhow, thanks for the reply! You've inspired me to take my first trip through the badlands, I leave in two weeks and I can't wait. Hopefully I'll have some good (enough) video!

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is really great to hear that I inspired you. Thank you very much for letting me know. The Badlands are really beautiful and I hope you find them just as beautiful as I did. I never made it to the south unit but any rides in the area would be my kind of scenery and are probably worth checking out. Of course while you are there check out Wall Drugs in Wall, and also about an hour east in Murdo is a really interesting and very large antique auto museum worth the look if that is your thing (it is mine).
      Your video will be more then good enough because it will be yours of your trip. Keep it personal to make it even better with lots of pictures or vids of yourself or family. For audio do some prerecorded bike audio, keep it simple, like just a mellow steady ride, and play it in the background of your vid (background means lower, understated volume) and maybe do a voice over narration or something along that line.
      It is going to be awesome, the trip, and the vid!

      @@RobertMerz your videos are some of the best footage. I really enjoy the natural sounds mixed with music that ISN'T annoying. Far too often you only get one or the other. I'm doing my first saddle sore so I won't have too much time to fiddle around but I'll take in as much as I can during that time. I appreciate the suggestions!

      @@RobertMerz Wow! What a difference. Now you "have to" go back and reshoot - what a chore! I subscribed so I'll be watching.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I can't guarantee that I will be able to go back and reshoot so many of these roads, I sure wouldn't mind if I had the opportunity. But there are also lots of roads I haven't filmed yet, and I really want to do those too. Meantime we wait to see when the US/Canada border is going to reopen, I suspect my filming will stay in Canada for another year.

    Would you consider adding month and temp to your videos. 👍

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ghost for the suggestions. I started putting the date on my vids a few years back exactly in response to comments like yours, the date on this one is about 1 minute in and it is September 5. I also add the date in the end credits. The temp was not something I have thought about before but worth my consideration for sure. I try to create a vid that is both enjoyable, lose yourself in the journey kind of thing, but also has information that is helpful for a viewer to plan a ride from. Temperatures are definitely information that is helpful to planning so yes I will look at that and see how I can fit it in without cluttering up the video too much.
      It sounds like you might be planning a visit to the area, if so be sure to check out Wall Drugs in Wall, it is pretty Iconic. Also in the area, about an hour east of Wall is the Pioneer Auto Museum in Murdo, if you like cars you really should check it out.
      Not sure which way you might be travelling but if you are going west beyond Wall Hwy 44 is a much nicer ride then the Interstate, and while you are on 44 stop in and see Scenic SD.
      Thanks so much for watching, and taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it.
