    My contractor is installing the same set up for each of our bedrooms this week and I cannot wait. We’ve used a hodgepodge of different remotes and/or wall controls since we moved in and the master bedroom in-wall controller has not worked for years. Just restoring normal control will be great, but adding it to HK with integration and automations and voice control !!?!! I’m a little too excited for a largely basic addition 😀

    I've done two ceiling fans so far (Living Room and Master Bedroom) like you have done, expect the Master Bedroom already had a two-gang box so no sheetrock repairs there and the Living Room had a single-gang box that I switched out to a double-gang box. I will be replacing the ceiling fan in the Guest bedroom next and replacing the single-gang box with a dual gang box and adding the fan and dimmer control to that room. Then I will do the controls in the office (same as the Guest bedroom) and finally the Den. The Den ceiling fan light switch is a three-way light switch and I will be replacing those two switches with the Lutron PD-10NXD-WH light dimmer switch (talk about expensive; this one is over $100.00 for one switch) and then a Decor dumb switch at the other end (don't want to deal with a Pico remote and changing out batteries). The fan switch is in a single location so all I have to do is replace the dumb switch with the Caseta fan control switch. All-in-all, I love these switches, especially the fan control switch; I just wish they were not so expensive.

  • @unrelativistic
    @unrelativistic ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Honestly, I would have left the drywall alone and kept the 3 gang box with a filler plate in the middle. This would give you more room for the wiring (there's never enough room with these deep switches) and allow you to separate the 2 switches and avoid breaking off the heat sink fins and de-rating them. But that's just me. You did a great job!

    • @ModernDayTech

    I had a question on this switch. I run alexa in my home, and I am curious on what "base station" you NEED. When you downloaded the lutron app you had to scan the QR code and stuff on the bottom of your smart hub. I do not have a "hub" but instead have 5 Alexa Echo Shows throughout the house. Now the echo shows themselves are a hub and can take voice commands etc. so I am wondering do I need to purchase anything additional to run these switches? (fan and light) or will they connect with my Echo Shows? I am not sure if the Echo Shows have QR codes on the bottom or not and I am not home to check.
    Thank you so much for any answers and advice.

      Hi Dustin, so all Lutron Caseta products require the Lutron bridge to work properly. This will give it internet access to sync your Amazon account and with your Lutron account and thus will work with Alexa. Some Alexa device have zigbee but Lutron does not work on zigbee so you will need the Lutron bridge. I hope that helps, but if you have any other questions, please feel free to join the discord (link the description) and ask the me and community.

      I originally installed the @Ecobee switch ( th-cam.com/video/0H_wbJsc16A/w-d-xo.html ) but my biggest issue was that it was not dimmable. So I solved that issue by installing a normal dimmer switch on the load side of the Ecobee. ( th-cam.com/video/Aq0ZpR96YzI/w-d-xo.html ) My main smarthome system is HomeKit/Siri but I also play around with the other big players. There are not any other HomeKit fan controls that I know of. They have full HomeKit fans but nothing for a dumb fan. They also have normal HomeKit switches that people have used for fans but those only have on/off controls. You not able to vary the speed. Yes, there are variable speed control switches for other system, just not HomeKit.

    • @ModernDayTech

      I’m no electrical expert but I doubt this will work on DC fan motors. Don’t forget the switch requires a neutral wire. I don’t recommend that you even try it. Maybe look into Sonoff or Shelly Relays. But if it works, it’ll probably only be on/off controls for a fan.

    Instead of remove the empty space with dry wall work, why not using the extra space to add an additional dummy switch (powered but not actually connected to a light) to run additional scenes?

    • @ModernDayTech
      @ModernDayTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t do that cause there was not a 3rd line wire. When I had 3 switches, two of them were using same line wire. I used the extra switch to dim lights cause the original smart switch didn’t have that capability. If I spilt the line wire, it wouldn’t be up to code. I could have used a spacer/cap for the extra gang, but I didn’t like the look of something there but not in use. The wife also wouldn’t approve of it.

      Older homes I believe built before the 1990's do not have a neutral wire and this will work for the fan with one caveat. Home's built after this now have neutral wires and this follows code. I believe the only need for the neutral wire is to adjust the speed. Without the neutral wire it would just be on and off for the fan.

      If the switch turns off the power to smart bulbs too, you won't be able to use this. This switch reduces the power on the wire going to fan and if the smart bulb is on the same wire, you'll mess up your smart bulbs. Smart bulbs need full power. This switch is for fasn with pull strings that stay at "high" power and then the switch reduces the power for fan speed control. I hope that help. Let me know if you have any more questions.

      It depends. How is it setup now, pull string with one master switch? Do you have easy access to run any addtional wiring? Do you understand basic electrical setups? If you put a smart fan and you still have a normal switch you'll have to cover it up so people don't turn it off or hardwire it all together like I did here and put wireless switches. instagram.com/stories/highlights/17945072540104505/

    • @ModernDayTech
      @ModernDayTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liberaltears1714 With a smart fan& light combo, , the switch with kill power totally, and it will take a while for it to reconnect, so you'll want to cover up the switch, so nobody turns it off. Another option with your current setup, If you have other lights in the room, you can also disconnect the light kit on most fans, and then a switch like this will work to control the fan.

    Can one switch control both fan and light?

    • @ModernDayTech
      @ModernDayTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Lutron does not have a switch model with fan/light control in one gang. That’s why I have one switch for each device in the video. There are other switch makers that have fan/light control in one gang but they don’t work with Homekit. (You might be able to bring them into HK with homebridge/hoobs but I haven’t test them)

    Geez for this to work with Alexa, Google Home and Homekit, you need the switch and a bridge. Those two together are $140. Might as well buy a new fan.

    You could have left it 3 gang and added a PICO to remotely control other lights and use the center button to control a scene or automation

      @@kitten1245 There’s so many different types of fan controls with remotes. If it’s in line, I would think it could interfere so I removed mine as I showed in the video. But please send me a link to the video cause I have another fan that’s 20-30 feet high and I don’t want rent a ladder just to remove the controller so I’m wondering the same thing.

      I installed the fan control on a fan with remote kit still connected. The power worked from the switch, it also changed the speeds. But on low and mid speeds the fan was making sounds as if power wasn’t constant. So I took it off.

    This is just silly. Why would you not just put a $2 blank decora plate or a decora switch with no wires connected instead of doing drywall work? This cleans it up fine and gives you room to expand in the future.

      I thought about using a blank but ultimately it came down to doing things correctly. It was originally a double gang to begin with, that I made into 3 for another smart home video and since it's in my master bedroom and its something I see everyday I decided to just do it right. Just a personally preference.
