So I’m hoping you still get notified on this video. This will control 5v signal yes? My thought would be to use this to control SSR’s that are 5 volt. Then when I upgrade to the leds, be able to do it a little at a time. I currently have like 10,000 lights that are just strings that I control with the relays. If these will put out a 5v signal they may just work.
Very clear and concise review. I am a complete and total virgin with doing this type of diy lighting but I was able to follow along and understand everything you were talking about. Well, except for some of the terminology but that's because of my lack of experience and will have to do a little (no, A LOT MORE, lol) homework but even though I may not have caught each piece of the jargon I still understood the function. I will absolutely be subscribing and spending a lot of time going back through your videos. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME and sharing your knowledge!
haha yep, I thought more about it later and realized. Totally forgot about it! Love these boards, I'm probably switching out all my old 27 channel boards for these :) I'm already using 3 in the display and converting many of these dumb RGB elements into pixels .
Great ideal for using them on your mega arch! Thanks for the link to find cheaper ways to get the best bang for the buck and have used your advice often. Look forward to your 2015 Christmas show!
at the 10:06 mark you cut off. please tell me more about connecting two power supplies, how that would work, and why you don't recommend it like you said
Clyde - got your reply, thanks a lot. I guess what was confusing me was that LOR's website shows images of sample layouts, and one of them shows their DMX board daisy-chained with a couple of their 16-channel AC controllers without a DMX interface. I guess it's designed into the board, but it wasn't clear (and their answer wasn't clear either). I can confirm the LOR hardware utility does not recognize the DMX board. I wonder if making a LOR/DMX cable would make any difference?
Back in 2015 when I filmed this and another video I found most people want to run them. I needed to shoot a video on how to do that. After the holiday I plan on doing just that.
I know this video is quite old, but do you still recommend this board, or are there better boards out now? I'd really love to try the new controller you just got as our front yard is half an acre alone, but not sure if it's overkill for just dumb rgb's?
Can anyone tell me why they use dumb RGB and their controllers. Is it personal preference or for backward compatibility with LOR? I will really like to know, if anyone can educate me. I know it might not be financial because I checked cost of dumb RGB )12mm bullet type) and it is almost equal to similar WS2811.
Hi, which are the lights you are using ? are they the 2811 or the 5050 ? and what is the difference ? brilliant video going to get one of these and have a play but not sure which leds to buy. thanks again
+Sebastian Shepherd This controller is a dumb RGB board. It only controls non-pixel RGB's. As for what pixels I use, I stay with the WS2811. I do have some 5050 strips. I prefer bullet nodes because they look more like mini Christmas lights. Send me an email at: leechburglights@gmail.com I can help you figure out what you're looking for.
This controller work with vixen ? I can connect with e682 and this controller each other ?if this can connect need any additional equipment need? thanks
Did you try this board with Vixen? I have the board on the way and I assumed that I needed a DMX controller to convert USB to DMX so I bought a $5 dollar converter. I had an Arduino controlled 16 channel mechanical relay setup last year. I'm adding a lot to the show this year to include this board. I also added the Raspberry PII with the Falcon Player to run the show. So far everything is working well. I'll let you know how the board works with Vixen when I get it next week. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LKZ7JMK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
+Matthew Mills I only use Dumb RGB bullet nodes from Ray... I have tested some 5v nodes, but they pull to many amps per output, limiting my use to 50 in one set per 3 RGB Channels. Not only that, they did not last in the weather. I reverted back to Ray's. IMHO I have yet to find the durable dumb RGB nodes from anyone that last for 4 seasons the way Ray's have. Also, if you have a problem with a few sets, Ray will replace them. Had a friend group order 1000 black wire nodes, over 300 were bad. No problem, Ray sent him 400 replacements at no charge. Ray's can be found here. Keep in mind there is a shipping cost involved. I usually get 2000 or so at a time. I spend roughly $110 on shipping for an order like that www.aliexpress.com/store/product/DC12V-100nodes-strand-RGB-dump-nodes-IP68-rated-24W-color-wires/701799_1932735895.html
I've got a question about these boards. I bought two of them is there any way to control the brightness through X lights or the falcon V2 dixell controller..... I will be using the DMX out the Falcon F-16 V2 the control them.??
I am really new to this process and hope to get a start on my holiday lighting this year. I wonder if you could answer a quick question. Is it possible to control this DMX board via the ethernet direct from my laptop? If not, what do you recommend using to connect my laptop to the control board? Thanks!
You must have a DMX interface to run this board from a computer. Watch this video here for more info... Setting up a "show" now will be very challenging. Most of us are knee deep in setup from now through Dec 5th. th-cam.com/video/22blRaz5gZM/w-d-xo.htmlm13s
Hi Clyde, I’m using this controller and I have trouble connecting my pixel lights to the controller because my pixels have 5 cables 5v/data/ground an extra cable for power and extra cable of ground.... how do I connect the pixels to the controller.... help please....!!
And what’s the difference... because for your answer I bought the wrong lights.... so what do I have to look out for when order the new lights to not make the same mistake
Leechburg Lights thank you so much Clyde... to bad for me didn’t watch this Video before I bought a bunch of stuff😂.... thanks a lot your videos are great and you explain a lot of things that other guys doesn’t....!
Clyde - I just got a LOR system and would like to use RGB's and have been watching some of your videos, however, I am not a very techy guy and am still very confused on how this all works. Do you have an videos for first timers with the basics? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Setup depends on what equipment you are planning to use. RGB can mean PIXELS or DUMB RGB. LOR will run it, however they are setup in different ways. What equipment do you have?
In order to work properly, you need a solid and steady 12v supply. Known as a constant current power supply. A car battery may not always provide that. The answer is yes, and no.
+Robert Gorsiski You can only run low voltage (either 5v to 12v) lighting from this controller. If the lights you want to run will plug straight into your standard wall outlet, they will not work with this board.
+Tim Burge Thanks for viewing :) I use 2 vendors on the Aliexpress.com website... Ray Wu for all dumb RGB bullet nodes and some pixels. I also use Raysflt for their 5v 2811 pixels. I also like to search eBay for dumb RGB modules with 3 or 4 5050 RGB LEDs (search: 5050 RGB module... and lots will come up). For the eBay modules I usually find them for around $.25 each or less. Great value, durable, easily replace-able :) and work perfectly with these controller.
+Tim Burge I ordered a large quantity of 5v and 12v power supplies from Ray Wu 2 years ago. These power supplies you see in the video here were sent to be by a friend (gift) since he had no use for them. The computer power supplies I receive are free and I make a few simple modification (I have a video on how I do this).
Clyde, out of all the dumb controllers that you purchase, which do you recommend now for LOR? Looks likes you have a few 30 channel and now this 36. Appears the prices are reasonable for each. Also, have you ever had any issues from AliExpress?
+Stephen Davis Good question Stephen. For value, I love the 30 channel controller best! But to be fair and honest, I use a range of controllers for different needs. For example, this controller is great for props that have 12 different sets of RGB's going to it. I also use the 27 channel and a 24 channel (around $40-$42 per controller shipped). Since their limits are lower, those are nice for props that are concentrated. For example, using the 8 output controller for a singing face is cost effective and provides enough channels for the prop. Also, the 27 channel boards run my 14 sets of icicle lights. 7 on one and 7 on another. I have 2 spare channels in case I have a channel fail. I can always re-aligh the channel counts and prop numbers in Nutcracker or LOR. It truly depends on what you're doing in your display. My first year I used the LOR CMB24DC to run a mega tree with 180 dumb RGB's per output. This was around 1.3 amps per channel and the only boards I had that could work for over 1a/ channel was the LOR board. It is all in what you need to run your display. If I went back to do it all over again, I would stick with only the 30 channel boards. They are the lowest price per RGB channel I've seen to date. But I'm sure next year we will see other improvements and I'll want to test those out as well.
+Leechburg Lights Thanks. Looks like you do a lot of business with AliExpress as well. Is that where you also purchase your lights? looks kind there and holiday coro are some of the best location...okay. that is my last question! thanks.
+Stephen Davis I do order from the US vendors (Seasonal Entertainment, Holiday Coro, and DIY LED Express) when they have a good pre-sale item I'm interested in. This hobby has seen a lot of innovation over the past 12 months. New vendors are popping up to offer great new low-cost props and display elements. However, I have built a good relationship with each AliExpress vendor and I'm thrilled with their quality. I am also pleased with their swift action when resolving any issue I may have. It is just something I've learned over the past (nearly) 3 years of learning RGB.
Clyde - nice video. How do you interface this with LOR? Did you have to buy a separate USB to DMX converter, or can you use the USB/RJ45 dongle that LOR provides? thanks,
I will typically use a DMX e1.31 bridge to convert data from LOR to send out to this controller. You can also purchase a separate USB to RS485 adapter (something with an FTD RS485 works best). They are around $20 but need to do some diy to make it work. Link is below. If you want to purchase a DMX USB dongle, Holiday Coro sells one for around $50 www.sparkfun.com/products/9822
Djsami33 Multigaming You must have a DMX to USB adapter. But yes, this will work as a dumb RGB controller. It will not run pixels. It works fine with light O Rama
Well it was kind of an impromptu. I did mention at the beginning I had just walked inside the house. But forget the fact that I use a tripod on every other video that I've ever done LOL sorry you have motion sickness now LOL
If I remember correctly there were 9 functions with the ability to change the speed of each function. I don't know of any Music Player that has DMX that will "run" this controller.
So I’m hoping you still get notified on this video. This will control 5v signal yes? My thought would be to use this to control SSR’s that are 5 volt.
