    And that's why melee players don't like Hungrybox. They're so addicted to that rushdown mess that a bait and punish option just looks boring.

    • @VC-ig1ii
      @VC-ig1ii 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Not true. Some melee players dislike hbox genuinely, but others dislike him for the same reason the sm4sh group disliked zero when he was winning non stop. I personally like hbox because he brings a higher level of thinking to melee. However melee and ultimate are very different games. When you get camped in melee, there are options; when you get camped in ultimate, that's just neutral.

    • @lipailong2
      @lipailong2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bait and punish is boring in Smash. The movement makes it way too easy to do and the mechanics make it the most rewarding option 9/10 times. It's shallow.

      1. It's pretty damn easy to bait out attacks.
      2. Bait and punish isn't that far off from camping and quickly devolves into it in Elite Smash.
      3. Top player isn't a skill level, it's a rank. It's based on tournament wins. If a wave of new players swept every tournament the number of top players wouldn't increase, they'd just be replaced. But I digress, top players get dumpstered by randos every other day in Smash Ultimate.

    first thing I think about when I think about Smash Ultimate is the fgc nod. You lose an interaction, get mixed, or your opponent reads you and there’s just this nod that you do- acknowledging that they were a step ahead and accepting that you need to be more conscientious about that situation if it arises again. That’s the first thing I think about, physically doing the nod and that feeling that goes along with it

    I think this raises an interesting question:
    Would it be bad game design to make a game where Fatality vs Runes would be the optimal playstyle?

    • @mehgamer467
      @mehgamer467 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@davis1228 the problem with using melee as an ex is that the archetypes and meta are mostly due to more than half the roster being unviable. The decision making has more options "gameplay wise" than other games and a lot of flexibility in how you play because of it. And ppmd and armada are patient players who dominated the scene. M2k too. Its just on the surface its all just rushdown, but the layers in your choices due to movement can be varied and can add to different styles and lots of different neutral interactions. Melee has at least x2 more options than other games with how things are approached. Even shielding you have 2 types of shields and then you have the option to wavedash/waveland oos as a bonus in multiple directions.
      But I would say in every fighter usuallu patient players are top 3. Even in air dash ones. Tekken 7 has nerfed movement and is too focused now on power creeps and less on neutral than other games and sfv is more on mix ups and oki than neutral like in sf4/sf3. But you have games like samurai shodown, mk11 being more neutral focused, granblue, and some other recent games. Guilty gear is more nuetral based now. Neutral based games are there in big numbers now because those games are also easier on casual players (the big money makers). The direction of both tekken and sf is pretty sad atm.

    • @friendlyghostval1591
      @friendlyghostval1591 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Spiked Blueshell a really quick answer to your question is actually both yes and no. I come from the mortal kombat scene, and we recently had a game designed JUST like kinda what youre looking for. It was called mkx, and it was an amazingly fun and fast paced game. Watching competitive play was hype for fans as well as for competitors. We all loved the game when it was around because there was always some crazy thing about to happen. The problem is that the only way to design a fighting game to make it unpredictable and hype like that constantly is to make it very tough and unbalanced for competitors. We loved mkx as competitors because it is what we had, but now that we have moved on to another game, we realized just how much the mechanics in mkx were designed to essentially be a game of rock paper scissors instead of what fighting games are supposed to be. So to answer your question, it can be bad game design for the people competing in the game, but it can also be very well made game design for the people watching the game and wanting to see hype moments

    The first thing I think about when thinking about smash ultimate is: the very poor neutral rewarding the "patient" player while punishing any form of aggression. The buffer system makes me feel like I'm always playing 8 seconds in the past while my character buffers a short hop arial when I wanted a full hop one.
    Patience is a great mind tool for fighting games but I think smash ultimate takes it too far. Having an entire character jugded on how good their zoning tools, oos options, and how good their nair is; just makes me want to go play melee or any other fighting game where the balance between patience and aggression isn't squewed in one direction. And for those of you who will say, "just play another game," or "git gud," that's not why I'm saying all this. I'm saying it cause a lot I people want to play this game on a less than casual level, but get turned off when the game has built in mechanics that reward lane play. I still like ultimate tho lol

    • @VC-ig1ii
      @VC-ig1ii 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davis1228 those games have a defined neutral tho. I played 3rd strike and played traditional fighters and the thing that all have in common is limited movement. The lack of fast movement in those games forces players to be more reactive and punish over committing opponents. Also melee was made 20 years ago as a party game so I doubt that sakurai intended the game to be for ADHD and whatever kind of people you have a personal vendetta against, it just had the right amount of tech for people to pick it up as a competitive esport. Also thanks for comparing smash to tekken cause you know they're basically the same game lol wut.

    • @VC-ig1ii
      @VC-ig1ii 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davis1228 hey man that's all good. See when your word it this way it comes off as less aggressive and more responsive to my comment. BUT you forgot that people resonate a lot with aggressive playstyles, it may not be "optimal," but it's fun to watch. Using your analogy of martial arts: Mike Tyson isn't known for being a defensive player and neither is Floyd Patterson but Mike Tyson made a name for himself because he was so oppressive. Also on a tangent, my original post was complaining about the limited movement in a SMASH game and how the game feels very slow for a SMASH game, so why are you bringing up traditional 2d fighters and comparing video games to pro martial arts. like apples to apples man lol.

    Every Fighting Game is about patience at the end of the day. For those adrenaline junkies that hate Hungrybox, they clearly lack it. Hype comes from one player figuring out another and where true masters of patience partake in their elegant dance. Real life fights are like this too. Everything about fighting isn't just a hype montage, but a battle of wits and quick thinking. fighting games are about making decisions. That's how they were in the past. I'm a diehard Soulcalibur fan and though I played Smash since 1999 my true 1st online experince was Smash4 and Ultimate. I like how Smash has Rage mechanic as a comeback factor and even DI. In that sense Smash is a pure Fighting game at a competitive level.Soulcalibur 6 has taken Rock paper Scissors and turned it in to a cutscene. in fact the process of decision making has been over simplified to the point its not decision making but well, button pressing. The addition of Soulcharge along with Reversal Edge makes the game more of "checkers" than chess. in terms of competition I say Smash is more of a pure fighting game than Soulcalibur6. I wish Soulcalibur was like Smash in that sense.And don't even get me started with Melee and its mechanics lol

    In my opinion, Smash ultimate is all about spamming your safest moves to cover as many options as possible.

    I think about my main, Samus. No, not Zero Suit Samus. Samus. Not even campy playstyle Samus. Not only am I one of the small group of people who play her, I play her *aggresively.*
