Super Saiyan itself had basically evolved to become part of a greater overall icon than just being a transformation. It felt as though it both made and broke the ceiling for anime as a whole and became intrinsically linked to the culture and even beyond that.

Yeah, it was hard for me to imagine another DB transformation that could potentially top it. But then I saw two transformations that changed my mind: Gohan's SSJ2 transformation against Cell, and Goku's Ultra Instinct transformation against Moro. Both of these transformation scenes were beautifully executed and contrasted SSJ1 transformation sequance in all the right ways. Honourable mention to Goku's UI transformation against Jiren, but I personally feel the moro arc one was more significant and emotional due to Goku getting CALM by seeing his friend Merus die, instead of getting angry. A brilliant subversion of expectations.

@@ligerade3536 A lot of people said the Ultra instinct "susanno"thing from the moro arc was stupid, but I loved it. How often do we get cool and unique techniques like that in DB? Something different from just a new ki blast or a new super hard punch? This is why I think Ultra instinct is such a unique form, it always does something new or different whenever its on screen, even in the granolah arc. But the best ultra instinct is still the moro arc one for me.

@@RedJasper87 I wish Ultra Instinct goku did those shadow clone things more in the granolah arc. He only used it once against Whis. I also liked when he remembered bardock and implemented bardock's fighting style into ultra instinct against Gas. It feels like goku is finally becoming a saiyan instad of fighting like a human all the time.

I love how Mob's percentage counter goes up like it's leading to something dangerous and then you have "???" which makes you question what will happen next. Is he stronger? Is he a different person? Why kind if person is he now? Is he gonna be okay? It's the mysterious side of his transformation that makes you wonder what really is his true potential and not only that but you also end up worrying about his change in character since you aren't sure if this is the Mob that you originally knew.

While of course iconic isn't the same as well written, its iconic status is unmatched. It's almost/in the same realm of ubiquitous as Pikachu basically.
And honestly, while there have been better transformations writing wise, I do think it is overall very underrated by far too many.
If you were to consider Super Saiyan as novel concept like the others in the list, I genuinely believe just through writing it could easily achieve the A rank, high B minimum, though it would be surpassed by SSJ2. It's great thematic relevance to its arc, it's hype, and it's rather cool.
I'll explain this concept in a weird way, but stick with it: I don't think the transformation works visually because of its actual design, I don't think it works as well as it does through its positive annotations, but though negative annotation; kind of like religious person would define God.
It didn't work because Goku is becoming blond/with golden hair and blue eyes, but it works because Goku doesn't have Black hair anymore. Because he is not what he was previously.
No one knew what a SSJ looked like at the time, nothing was ever told about it visually, just some _wrong_ in story speculation, but when it comes, you know *_that's it_* . And because you didn't know previously, it stuck the lending so hard. Remember that Kaioken was there, it was known what a visual power up looked like on Goku. And SSJ isn't that, it's totally different and that's its strength.
In the same vein, that to me is also why UI Sign is better than the Mastered UI. You know of the concept of UI, you don't know what it looks like. But since you also know that it's more of a state of mind and body than a form to reach, the fact that it is so similar to Goku's base form is what makes it click. Then later the MUI becomes basically _just another_ transformation, UI sign but stronger.

@@nuredingeziqi679 Super saiyan is better than ssj2. SSj2 is literally only cool for gohan, meanwhile nearly EVERYONE has a cool SSJ1 transformation scene. Whether its goku on namek, vegeta while training, Broly after Pargus death, or even Cabba when Vegeta was threatening to destroy planet sadala. SSJ is not only cooler overall, it is the very premise of SSJ that even makes SSJ2 possible in the first place. SSJ also has more backstory and lore, while there is nothing on SSJ2 besides the fact that it is just a stronger version of SSJ1. SSJ1 literally defines how transformations scenes are done TO THIS day, and writing wise, it is one of the strongest on the list due to its amazing build up, its backstory, and it being the culminiation of everything we knew about goku and the saiyans at that point of the story. Not to mention its cultural influence on japan.

i really liked the Naruto Kyubi modes before he and Kurama became buddies. It fits really nice into the story as well. The reason why Naruto was a shit ninja in the begining was the Kyubi that pulled him down as a handycap and he had to work extra hard to keep up with everyone else. But when the Kyubi came through it kinda showed his true potential with Kurama. He even learned to control the Kyubi Chackra bit by bit, wich made it hit even harder when he lost controll again, because everytime that happened, he would slipp even closer to the edge of total loss of control and you really felt that danger. For example, when he went 4-Tails against Orochimaru, where he not only hurt his friends, but the transformation was so intense that his whole skin got burned up under all that chakra. And instead of just relying on the Kyubi Chacra, (Like the shield HEro for example) Naruto always tried to work on his own Power. The moment when he developed the Rasen Churiken for example was one of the most hyped in the series, and the Sage mode is the peak of that. That was just pure Naruto training so hard, in his own way, that he surpassed everyone else

But the war Arc, especially with SO6P, essentially said that Naruto training hard didn't matter because he was destined to be great. Because the overall theme of working hard overcomes talent was muddled. Naruto was only able to put in the work that made him discover, say the rasenshuriken, because he was Naruto. It was not something everyone else could do, that he just did more of. I mean even the rasengan was only taught to him because the two main users of the jutsu were directly related to him.

@@philipdaviddavies9478 I don't think a lot of people have issue with the powerup itself. The issue is that it really muddled the themes that naruto set up earlier on. Thematically and from a story and character perspective, it didn't make much sense. Hard work triumphs says the MC, but his main power is obtained not by self discipline, hardwork but rather from his inner demon friend.
Manga like Bleach are even more egregious in handing out power to the MC, but Bleach's theme was not hardwork triumphing destiny and talent. That is why people don't have much issue with it. Or look Demon lord form in Tensura. It also really just hands out a ton of power to Rimuru, but it works thematically. It shows rimuru having character development as he grows from his naive self of season 1, and into a more jaded and realistic character. Someone who still believed in being friendly, but no longer believed that everyone else also was like him and was friendly.
Kyuubi form is cool, and in a lot of ways is not a bad transformation in and of itself. But when you take into account the rest of the story of naruto, it falls flat. Unlike Sage mode, which is attained more from his own hardwork (along with some aid of course, but from the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, There are no Self Made Men). Kyuubi form and the War Arc in general just muddles and ignores the themes of what otherwise is a very good story. The rule of cool overrides everything in the Arc and in Shippuden generally. That is what people dislike.
If you want inner demon done better, I think something like Jujutsu Kaisen and Sukuna's and Yuji's relationship is so much better. Itadori has to learn to grow past relying on Sukuna, because relying on sukuna is dangerous, to both himself and to the ones he cares about. Naruto did something similar with Naruto Vs Orochimaru in Shippuden, but then strayed later on.

super saiyan and Ultra instinct kind of did everything a transformation is supposed to do. Super saiyan was built up the entrie time on namek when goku arrived it set the foundations for how to build up a transformation and then the pay off.

Another thing I dont think people give SSJ or even UI enough credit is it does tie into the themes and characters very well (at least initially with SS then it becomes a generic power-up). SS is representative of goku's inner acknowledgement of his heritage while also not throwing away his journey till that point. His nature vs nuture now coming to a cross in paths and with each in one hand that power is enough to trample the emperor of evil, His I am speech encapsulates everything perfectly, him being a saiyan but from earth one of pure heart yet awakened by rage. It's the ultimate development for goku and really besides learning one final lesson by the end of the buusaga/Z, his understanding of himself is complete hence the transition to gohan. UI also encapsulates goku's entire journey and challenges who goku is. Both the DBS anime and manga make it explicitly clear whether its all of goku's teachings or everything he's been thru up to that point allowed him to reach that state. It's the embodiment of everything he's learned and a showcase of goku's strength both physically and metaphorically. It's a state that he didnt reach just on his own but thru people he's met and learning from them is able to gain greater power. It's something the moro arc then continues and while I dont like True UI, even the granolah arc tries to continue the idea that UI ties heavily in goku's mental state and who he is as a person. Being the prime example of what a power-up should be not only thru what it means to go further beyond but also how it represents u as a person or fighter is why it will never be dethroned ever even if it's not someone's personal favorite

      @Alkios 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +63

It depends, you can actually take it seriously. But not seriously as in « this is so fcking badass » or whatever. It’s way deeper than that. The Hito Hito no mi model Nika is the most cut out representation of freedom. The sun throughout the manga has been presented as the symbol for freedom and in the ancient times the sun god Nika was the entity slaves turned to in order to be freed. The real goal of Luffy is not to be the pirate king or find the One Piece, it’s to achieve true freedom, the kind of which is not bound by any limitations. Gear 5 completely breaks those limitations, down to the laws of physics and genetics. When transforming, luffy is not getting angry or sad, he is just enjoying his freedom. Gear 5 is extremely original and thematically on point in terms of power ups, it’s perfect.
Also yea for some reason you can’t help but smile, it’s crazy how seeing a fictional character being free can bring you such joy.

Disagree, the numbers going up add anticipation. Not just that, but with the countdown being tied to mob's emotions, the numbers can jump up a random amount, and it allows for him to jump from 0 to 100 instantly too if the situation calls for it. So it's got the anticipation of 100% incoming, but it can still play with the timing for the surprise factor, which I think is actually 100%'s greatest strength.

The way I understand Gold Experience Requiem is that it indeed removes causality. Basically, it removes consequences from causes, which is the opposite of what Diavolo stands does, which is removing the causes from consequences (which is why we don't see a few characters die during the final battle, time just skips and they're dead). So, basically, nothing that is done to GER can work because it removes the consequence (for example, being hurt) to the cause (the attack). Which is why at the end Diavolo enters a state of dying endlessly.
About Naruto's transformation, I'm not as critical as you about Kyubi's form, because it also represents that bond that Kurama and Naruto have formed. They start the series in an antagonistic way, but then slowly but surely, Naruto manages to gain Kurama's trust, and they become friends and staunch allies. I still agree with your criticisms, but I think that aspect is somewhat alleviated by the symbolism of Kurama giving his chakra freely when before it was always a threat that he could overwhelm Naruto and take over every time his chakra sipped through.
Now Baryon Mode is pretty interesting in that it is both the ultimate transformation for Naruto, but also a one time use. It makes Naruto OP as fuck, even higher than Kyubi mode or Six Paths Sage mode, but it comes at the cost of Kyubi's life. So, is it a power-up? Still though, it ties to the symbolism of Kyubi and Naruto sharing that bond, so it is a very impactful one, emotionally speaking. Plus it just looks cool, imho.
As for Super Saiyan and Ultra Instinct, hard agree on these two. The thing that hyped me so much about Super Saiyan when I was reading the manga and watching the anime in the 90's was the build-up to it. We'd heard Vegeta talk about how he was going to become a legendary super saiyan because he's the Prince of Saiyans, we'd see Frieza quake in fear every time the thought of a Super Saiyan coming to life crossed his mind to the point he blasted an entire planet to avoid it... And then Goku turns into one... And Frieza is like "huh, you changed". Like, I loved just how hyped the transformation was, how impactful the pure visual was, but I also loved just how long it took Frieza to realize what happened, and see the pure rage and anguish when he finally understands that his worst nightmare has happened. I feel like what makes Super Saiyan so great in that arc, is that Frieza doesn't immediately recognizes it. After all, it's a legend, nobody has ever seen it. It just takes a bit of time for it to dawn on him and when it does, it's just perfect.
Ultra Instinct is quite literally "The Zone", even more so if I understand the meaning of the japanese name correctly, which seems to be about having perfect awareness of oneself. What I like the most about it is just how incrementally it is revealed. We don't get pure Mastered Ultra Instinct at first, we get a first step, then another... I have to say though, when he finally masters it in the manga only Moro Arc? Pure hype.

I'm sure a lot of people doesn't know but I will take the time to explain as short as I can 💀
The concept of Bankai is suppose to be used as a final resort move. Because a bunch of characters spammed it, a lot of people assume it has the function of a power up (Which, I do not blame anyone tbh) To be fair, it is in some ways, but it is not the initial purpose. Bankai means "Final Release". It is a move that must guarantee victory as close as it can. Which is why most of the most op bankais of the series are kido base. (...or hax to put it simpler)
To put it simple, imagine the Bankai as a final trump card
The majority of characters who spammed Bankai was because they weren't necessarily strong enough to fight with their Shikai alone, thus they had no other choice but to use their Bankai more often

    • @EskChan19
      @EskChan19 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah but at the end of the day, what the show shows is more important than what it tells. It TELLS us that Bankais are a final trump card not to be used lightly. But it SHOWS us everyone spamming Bankai basically 100% of the fight, which just makes the statement it made before factually untrue. It doesn't matter what the show explains it as when it then immediately shows us that the explanation is bullshit.

    • @ankii_illus
      @ankii_illus 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@EskChan19 The show didnt display characters abusing the Bankai, they display using their bankai because of the density of the situation they were constantly getting themselves into
If "what the show shows is more important than what it tells" is the way you watch Bleach, then you may not be watching it the right way
Bleach isn't a story that directly deliver the message, it will deliver the messages through the lines
Kubo uses a lot of poetry to explain his storys
A good example is when Ichigo feel sadness, he'd ratter display rain instead of tears
If you really want to read my bs well... yea you can read bellow
As I said, "The majority of characters who spammed Bankai was because they weren't necessarily strong enough to fight with their Shikai alone, thus they had no other choice but to use their Bankai more often"
Most of the fights that the bankai were released was in a life or death situation. What I mean by that is the same exact explaination that I "quoted" just now. If the user spammed it, that means he was facing too many strong opponents . If we look at Toshiro who is suppose to be a prodigy, when he used his Bankai, his opponents were either similar strength as him or higher. List of opponents when Toshiro released his Bankai in the fight...
Shawlong (without gentei kaijo) (barely won)
Luppi (couldn't kill him even in Bankai)
      Harribel (top 3 Espada)
      Aizen (it's fucking Aizen)
Cang Du (forced to use bankai before getting it stolen)
      Bazz-B (Bankai was stolen)
Gerard (Fighting someone with an infinity of revives)
      Renji, Ichigo,
Another reason why they shouldn't consider their Bankai as a power up, is the same reason they fucked up so much in the first invasion in the tybw. Of course, an argument can be made by saying "they are considering their bankai as a powerup because they are independant in their bankai", however, I would argue that the conclusion of this is a reason why Bankai shouldn't be displayed as a powerup. What im saying is that they shouldn't be using their bankais often in the ideal of situations.
Heres some people that used Bankai in good timings:
      - Hirako Shinji (cfyow)
      - Shuhei, Kisuke
      - Shunsui
      - Rojuro
      - Senjumaru

Sun breathing or Hinokami Kagura is basically ingrained into the Kamado family, and as explained in the movie, it's the very first breathing technique that made the other 5 original breathing forms because the original 5 demon slayers just cannot attain Sun Breathing. For him to completely just brush off Water Breathing is kinda valid, since learning Water Breathing is basically learning an IMPERFECT Sun Breathing, which became PERFECT because Tanjiro's ancestors have perfected it in the past.
It simply kind of goes like this: The Kamado bloodline knows Hinokami Kagura, but Tanjiro is learning Water Breathing, that's the Level 1 that he needs to surpass in order to reach Level 2, or in this case, Hinokami Kagura, the perfected version of Water Breathing.
Basically, this power-up isn't as impactful as the ones in the higher tiers, but its explanation and power-up method is one of the best examples of a power-up

He has always been ashamed of his 100% and ???% because he has no control over who he attacks and the fear of "will this be the time where he hurts one of the people close to him?" is what makes his transformation as intriguing as it is.

Kyubi form in Naruto is the exact reason why I think Rock Lee is the true main character. Because in the end, he did not once depend on someone else's power to get stronger and worked harder than any other character in the show to get to where they are. No one represents that Talent don't mean anything when in the face of hard work.

Naruto's story was never about hardwork vs talent, its about working with the cards you get.i really liked the Naruto Kyubi modes before he and Kurama became buddies. It fits really nice into the story as well. The reason why Naruto was a shit ninja in the beginning was the Kyubi that pulled him down as a handicap (He had terrible chakra control and wasted a lot of chakra) and he had to work extra hard to keep up with everyone else. But when the Kyubi came through it kinda showed his true potential with Kurama. He even learned to control the Kyubi Chakra bit by bit, which made it hit even harder when he lost control again, because everytime that happened, he would slip even closer to the edge of total loss of control and you really felt that danger. For example, when he went 4-Tails against Orochimaru, he not only hurt his friends, but the transformation was so intense that his whole skin got burned up under all that chakra. And instead of just relying on the Kyubi Chakra, (Like the shield Hero for example) Naruto always tried to work on his own Power. The moment when he developed the Rasen Shuriken for example was one of the most hyped in the series, and the Sage mode is the peak of that. That was just pure Naruto training so hard, in his own way, that he surpassed everyone else

I agree on your point but NOT in the case of the Kyubi form. Kyubi form was actually one of Naruto's best forms because it didn't symbolize Naruto always being special, it represented Naruto overcoming the barrier that had, until that time, always fought and stood against Naruto.
Imo, Six Paths Sage Mode was the one that really destroyed the concept of rising to the top through growth. Naruto was basically gifted power of the gods. It wouldn't have been wrong if it was re-written to represent the pinnacle of Naruto's sage mode, but the way it was presented to him was what ruined the idea of hard work in the verse more than anything else.
